Funny, I bought The Fountains of Silence yesterday.

I started The Complete Persepolis for the year long challenge.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11283 comments Peggy, Persepolis is really good. I read both separately for my bookclub a few years back. It made for a great discussion.

Did you buy the audio? I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I just got confused because there were several different characters introduced at the same time and I must have not been paying enough attention. Sometimes it's easier for me to focus on a physical copy.

message 1106: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm really enjoying it so far Sandra.

@Kristie: no, ebook. I had it on my wishlist and it was a kobo deal, so I snatched it up :)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Bread Alone for my yearly challenge. I really liked it and hope my library has the author's other books. If you know Seattle, you will be right at home here and if you like bread and bread making, it will have your mouth watering. I enjoyed the characters and some of the dialogue is a hoot.

I have started The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories, China from the Bottom Up and The Human Division for yearly challenge tasks. I am almost done listening to A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

I do not own the book, Janice, but I have it on one of my open tasks too.

Margo | 11663 comments I finished The Island of Sea Women yesterday. It was very informative both about the extraordinary sea women of a Korean island and about the savage history of the country. It was a 5 star read and made me realise, once again, how ignorant I am of world history.

Currantly reading The Sun Down Motel and This Lovely City

message 1111: by Roz (last edited Oct 06, 2020 05:51PM) (new)

Roz | 4544 comments I finished reading White Chrysanthemum today. It's also about the haeyneo of Jeju Island (Korea), Margo, at least in part. It's about 2 sisters that grow up on Jeju Island as part of the haeyneo culture and are separated when the older sister is stolen by Japanese soldiers to become a comfort woman (prostitute) for the Japanese military in Manchuria. I gave it 5 stars. Tragic and wonderful at the same time.

I'm moving on to An Elegant Woman.

Uh oh, I got a notice that Blue Ticket was available for Kindle download and I need it to finish Badge 2 of the Trivia Challenge, so I guess I'm reading that one first.

message 1112: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Daughter of Fortune for the monthly challenge.

I can't believe I waited so long to read something by Isabel Allende. I only read the first chapter so far, but I love the writing!

message 1113: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I finished The Sun Down Motel yesterday. It came close to being a 5 star, but just wasn't there.

I will start Age of Empyre today. I'll be able to kill of that series, thank goodness. I'm still a little annoyed about the plethora of cliffhangers in that series and I just want it done now.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to A Breath of Snow and Ashes this morning. I love listening to the narrator of these books!

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I decided after a long debate with myself to give up on The Child Thief. I'm 40% in and dreading the read. Why bother continuing when you dread it? Utterly silly. So, I decided to browse Amazon's prime reading and found Shades of Wicked. It's free, silly vampire fluff, so why not? I started it last night.

Margo | 11663 comments I finished The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and I enjoyed every word of it. This was a comedy horror but don't underestimate the horror factor! It was pretty gruesome 😱

As I'm in the to be given a good scare I've picked up Summer of Night. So far it has a very similar feel to It as it's characters are kids just starting their summer break.

PattyMacDotComma Michelle Obama is an excellent example of "Nevertheless, she persisted", which has become a feminist cry.

In her memoir, Becoming, she takes us from Chicago's Southside to Ivy League universities to the White House. Great read, great audio as well.

Roz | 4544 comments I finished reading Still Life with Bread Crumbs. I think I had started reading it once and for some reason put it aside. I don't usually do romance novels. I often find them sappy and embarrassingly cliché. But this is charming and heartwarming. The characters are quirky and gave me a few chuckles. 3 stars

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my space opera book for my yearly challenge with The Human Division. Only one more book in the series and I can declare this one dead.

I also finished a sweet middle grade book with "wizard" in the title for my yearly challenge. The Evil Wizard Smallbone. The audiobook was wonderfully narrated by Jesse Bernstein. The story had a good message about working together and following through with what you say you are going to do.

I am currently reading The Book of Koli because Janice made me read the book preview. This is my "just because" read for the month.

I am also current reading The Corpse Walker: Real Life Stories, China from the Bottom Up, and struggling to stay interested. This book is for my yearly challenge. I will finish it because I could not find anything else for the task.

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I finished my 'just because' book, Shades of Wicked and have now started a new series. This one was free with Amazon prime, and the next book is on hold from the library. Final book is being released in 2021.

I will start my monthly challenge read today, Kin.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19219 comments I'm currently reading The Whale Rider as it's too short to fit any of our activities here in the group. I'm enjoying it so far, although I forgot how liberally he uses Māori in his books. It's either explained, you get the jist, or there is a glossary at the end of the book, so it's easy to work with. It just takes a little bit to get your head into, but I am glad that I remember some words from the last book of his I read.

message 1139: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I finished Summer of Night. It was a great listen, really managed to build up the dread. 4.5 stars

Started Opium and Absinthe and possibly Malorie. I seem to be enjoying darker stories at the moment, must be the month that's in it!

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I finished Age of Empyre and thus the series. My grandson was wanting me to hurry up and finish so that we could discuss. Last night, I whined about the unusual spellings of the names. Like why does Empire need to be spelled Empyre? He replied, "You try to create a cast of people and places with Elven names and see how you do," LOL! I guess I got told.

I may start The Searcher tonight while driving to yoga.

message 1142: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Searcher! I have it on my TBR list.

I am really enjoying The Book of Koli. I love the “Mad Max in the forest” feel of the story. It is fascinating how ones mind takes in the strange spelling and word manipulation and automatically translates it into understandable English. I was lucky to download both the audiobook and the ebook from my library. I keep switching back and forth.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Lilisa - The Corpse Walker is not bad. It is a typical book of short stories. Some stories are more interesting than others. I just finished the story that the title of the book was taken from. It is really hard to imagine, but we have to accept it as truth. 😊

I thought the most interesting part of the book, was the Introduction of the author, and what he has been through. The short stories are actually written as interviews. Some are longer than others. The one about human trafficking was revolting - just because of the attitude of the person.
