JAN '20: Read a Book that is Being Adapted into a Movie or TV Show in 2020
Also just FYI: we're bringing back the wrap-up topics this year, in which you can discuss your picks after you've read them (we'll use this initial topic mostly to discuss what we're going to pick). Only this time the wrap-up will be posted in advance, so nobody has to wait until the end of the month and we won't forget to post it.
And please remember that if you want to open up a new topic to discuss a particular book (for example, let's say a group of you decides to read Dune for January), that is absolutely fine!!

2019 was such a bust year for me... I think I'm going to attempt (keyword being attempt) to get back into this for 2020.
Hi! I'm going to read Brave New World in January, to start. I still don't know what other books can I add to the challenge so those links are definitely helpful, lol
I think I'll go for The Turn of the Screw as it's short and I've been meaning to read it for a while.
Then if I'm feeling motivated, I'll try A Suitable Boy.

I've earmarked Little Fires Everywhere for this month as it's been sitting on my kindle unread for the last couple of years.
Hello. It's the first time i'm doing the reading challenge (never had the time to really commit due to uni). I'm probably gonna read Just Mercy.
I'm thinking picking between Death on the Nile, The Witches, and Little Fires Everywhere. I put Emma on my list, but it seems like it'll be too "difficult" for me at this point. I need an easier read to back into the swing of things!
I’ve decided to read The Woman In The Window by AJ Finn. I’m still not over the power of Amy Adams in Sharp Objects last year, and I think this is a perfect fit for me!
I'll probably end up reading one of the Point Horror books by R.L. Stine or one of the Fear Street books, but I'm going to try for Turn of the Screw and then follow up with Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware. I have a ton of the Fear Street ones after getting hooked on the Teen Creeps podcast...
Hello! I'm going to be trying out the Luminaries because I think it'll be a good challenge. I've just barely started it already and I think I should be able to soldier through!
I'm gonna read Dune, and god help me if it gets pushed back again. I'll probably read something else like Death on the Nile or The Pale Horse just in case.
I’m going to read the book Just Mercy for January.(Also: ’m trying to figure out how to link to books in GoodReads, and the instructions weren’t entirely clear to me, and I think I did it wrong. Please excuse my ignorance!)
I'm trying to decide between Made for Love and Little Fires Everywhere. It might depend on which comes through from the library first.

I have no intention of watching the new Dracula because I'm not here for absolutely anything done by Steven Moffat but the book is on my tbr for this year and has been for many years, so I'm gonna give it a try! I've realized I struggle with challenges because they often make me feel guilty for needing to read something I don't already own to fit the challenge rather than my frankly terrifying number of unread books. So I think this year I'm going to try to participate only when a book I already own suits the task and hopefully that works better.
This is based on a couple assumptions, but I'm thinking about reading The Subtle Knife since HBO is doing His Dark Materials, the second season should be out by the end of the year (per this article), and based on the timeline of the series, I believe season 2 will cover The Subtle Knife. Does this work?
Katie wrote: "I have no intention of watching the new Dracula because I'm not here for absolutely anything done by Steven Moffat but the book is on my tbr for this year and has been for many years, so I'm gonna ..."Katie i have that problem too! i try really hard to make a book i have work within the challenge. if it doesn't, if a listed book is one i want to read, i get it from the library (i just did this in December - i really wanted to read "I'll be gone in the dark" so i borrowed it from the library). if nothing speaks to me, i skip it.
I have somewhere around 50 books in my house i want to read so i only add to the list if its something i already wanted to pick up. spending money on MORE books when i have what feels like an endless pile seems silly!
Undine wrote: "I'm gonna read Dune, and god help me if it gets pushed back again. I'll probably read something else like Death on the Nile or The Pale Horse just in case." I'm gonna do Dune as well! It's one of my roommate's favourite books and it seems right up my alley. I was thinking of starting The Wheel of Time for the January challenge but it's unlikely to be released in 2020, although principal photography has started.
I’m going to read P.S. I Still Love You this month. I’ll probably try to read To All the Boys I've Loved Before first!
The trailer for Emma looks so lush and it's the only Austen book I haven't read-for shame-so I've got that down for Jan
I started The Luminaries since it’s been in my queue for 2 years but 150 pages in (out of 850!!!) I find it so dry and boring that I’m going to drop it. It doesn’t even match the synopsis of the TV show, which sounds way more compelling. I don’t want to waste anymore of my time. Am thinking about Just Mercy, The Witches, or A Suitable Boy. Probably the third one.
Okay. I am diving in. I started A Suitable Boy. It is long AF but reading it on a kindle helps to not fixate so much on the amount of pages.
I'm going to read Rebecca, since I'm trying to buy less books and I already own it. I've also been looking for some motivation to read it as well
I'm on the waitlist for Normal People and Just Mercy at the library, which thankfully I'll get next week and I think last week of January, respectively.
I only read half the challenges last year and loads of books not for the challenge so I’m gonna try to stick to finishing my challenge books first. I’m just not into anything for this month’s theme; I’ve read quite a bit of the books on all these lists and everything else is either uninteresting or unavailable through my library, boo.
I've been chipping away, slowly, at The Turn of the Screw and I like it but it doesn't lend itself well to reading in snippets, which is what most of my reading is during the week. Probably gonna go off theme for a bit to get back into the swing of things.
reading the woman in the window. i don’t really read many thrillers so this would be an interesting foray into that genre.
I am nearing the end of Little Fires Everywhere and really enjoying it so far. It has made me more excited to see the miniseries.
My pick was Rebecca mainly because of timing. I'd requested the audiobook back in...I want to say August of last year. Finally was able to borrow it in early January. :D
I'm actually reading Rebecca because of one of last year's challenges ("u in danger girl") lol, but I decided to read another one in the spirit of a new year's challenge. I started Normal People by Sally Rooney, listening to it on audiobook. I like it so far but I can see why it is polarizing, the writing style is very blunt and sparse.
Ended up grabbing Brave New World for this month's challenge on a whim. I somehow skipped reading it during a period of my teenage years where I nearly exclusively read dystopia fiction.
Just finished Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption and wow what an amazing book. It made me smile, angry, sad, ... I can't recommend it enough
I'm starting with something I can actually finish in a month, Death on the Nile! It's my first Agatha Christie and I am enjoying it very much.
I read Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix.
This was a very entertaining horror with elements of comedy and wonderful pop culture references. I enjoyed the story and liked the ending too.
