That said, this entire back story was very troubling to me. Many people have awful childhoods and abusive parents and they don't become obsessive murderous stalkers. It bothers me when these types of backgrounds are presented as seemingly mitigating circumstances for the killer's choices.
I don’t think Brennan went far enough in relating his background to his deadly psychological behavior. There should have been a turning point in his behavior at a younger age, not in high school with the girlfriend. His tendencies should have shown up sooner.


I thought that, too, Melissa, until I learned no one had heard from her in years. That was certainly out of character for her. That’s when I was certain he’d killed her.
