I am going to start the review off with a quote that I found fun and spot on when it comes to dog thinking.
" The next thing I knew we were in the Porsche, Bernie at the wheel, me riding shotgun. The sun was low in the sky, big and orange, and we were headed right into it. Bernie took his shades from behind the visor and put them on.
"Chet! You do that every time."
Do What? The barking? That was me?
"They're just sunglasses, for God's sake."
Sure, just sunglasses, but I didn't like when he wore them, couldn't help it."
Bernie has tickets to the circus and going to take his Son Charlie who loves Elephants. The circus elephant Peanut and his trainer are missing. Bernie and his sidekick Chet are hired by Popo the Clown to find them. They are also working a divorce case and Bernie is dealing with his ex wife's soon to be husband.
A lot going in the fast paced story. I did find myself lost in couple of spots on what was going on. Overall I am still enjoying Chet the dog being the narrator and the humor it brings. I also liked the fact I did not have it figured out until the end, I like books that keep me guessing on who, what and why.

I am not going to write much of a synopsis for this book, it is that hard to put in writing.
Young Clay Jannon finds himself working at a 24 hour bookstore after a recession hits and no longer a web-design drone. He works the late night shift and not many customers come in and when they do they check out odd items.
I wanted to like this book and so much of it pulled me in and then, poof, lost me. I liked that the book store and it's owner had a mystery. Just wish some of the unnecessary content would have been left out. I liked the concept, just could not get fully involved in the story.

Let's just get to the point, young woman is expected to please the dead. Book is dull, skips some important parts, like where did the money come from. I will say I love the writing style just not the story line.

Taken from the back of the book. "What sets 'She Bets Her Life' apart is Mary Sojourner's ability to take both an objective and a deeply personal look at the psychological and physiological impact of gambling addiction on women. Having lived it, Sojourner is brutally forthcoming, and with her penchant for research and fact-finding, the narrative is teeming with important information and resources to help steer women(and their loves ones) toward help and healing."
Good book but parts of it dragged and other parts repetitive. I did find her insights and experiences very interesting and you can tell she did her research.
Quote from the book. "The life of a woman compulsive gambler is not a straight line, though in the worst moments of feeling trapped she may feel as though she is in a dark and endless tunnel."

Ernest J. Gaines is a wonderful storyteller. He is able to take a heavy subject and sprinkle in a little humor here and there. It all starts in a courthouse were a man shoots and kills his son. The rest of the book gives you a very real look into the struggles of a small Bayou town with the history being discussed and relived in the local barbershop. Can be a quick read but I don't recommend it. Take your time and think about with it saying and showing.

Willie Nelson is an interesting person and he just puts it all out there in this book. I am not a fan of a lot of the country music nor of Willie Nelson but my husband is so I know his music. Must say his lyrics do draw you in. Stories are the typical marriage heartache, don't understand why things went wrong, why people use me, judge me...bla bla bla.... in the life of a music artist. I have read other books about him and enjoyed them as well as this one. Still not a fan, but I can see why people with the same don't care what you think attitude, like him.

Megan Phelps-Roper is the Granddaughter of Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church. This book just puts it all out there on what happened in the family, at the protests, and what their beliefs were while she was involved with the Church. She then leaves the church and goes into how and why she becomes the anti-Westboro Baptist Church activist.
Book is eye opening and leaves you in ah that someone can walk away from hate and become a strong voice to respect and love.
Highly recommend.

Tells the story of how Chet and Bernie became a team. Wish the story could have gone a little more to set the picture of adjusting living and working together but it is nice to know how they met. Very quick read and I recommend reading this one if you are fan of the series.

Venus Soileau walks you through some of her life dealing with a neglectful family and others who came and went in her life. Story is powerful but so hard to read because of the choppy writing and lack of flow. It is a book with a lot of information but little substance.

From the book. "The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America’s western territories, even as lawless gold rush towns begin to mark the landscape. While the civilized East debates Mr. Darwin’s heretical new theory called evolution, two paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars."
I could not get into the book for a few reasons. First,it uses the typical stereotypes, turn the page, surprise me on showing there are other types of people in the 1870's. Second reason, lack of depth and rounded background of the characters. Third and big reason, lack of flow in the story telling, felt chopped off at times or just not well connected. I feel this may be because of the fact it was finished by a ghost writer and not only does it fall short, feels unfinished and misdirected. No real fault of the ghost writer, you can't read the mind of an Author who has passed away on the direction he was going.

Good but slow read. With all the details and disturbing details it made it a slow read. I like that the book is an unbiased account and did not go over the top with details of the men's suffering but did give you enough to know it was dreadful. I am very surprised there was not more deaths. The book does have the court hearing and what happened after the sentencing. I can understand why is a topic that is still debated today on what should have been done, what really happened and what happened in the aftermath. Yes book does go into the blame game but that is to be expected in a tragedy of this magnitude.

Taken from the back of the book. "In the harsh wilderness beyond the owl world of Ga'Hoole, a wolf mother hides in fear. Her newborn pup, otherwise healthy, has a twisted paw. The mother knows the rigid rules of her kind. The pack cannot have weakness. Her pup must be abandoned on an icy riverbank-condemned to die. But alone in the forest, the pup, Faolan, does the unthinkable. He survives. This is Faolan's story, the story of a courageous wolf pup who rises up to change forever the wolves of the beyond. "
Good story but dragged in so many spots that I almost lost interest. I enjoyed the interaction of the pup Faolan and the bear, just wished it lasted a little longer. The mother wolf that was forced to leave a pup behind story line is depressing and yet inspirational. The whole book has ups and down and very raw moments but overall a good read. I would have loved this book when I was younger but I have a few issues here and there with the structure and time line of the book.

I stopped reading on page 101 and skimmed the rest of the book. Did not find anything to laugh out loud about. A typical stereo type into and wife and husband relationship with kids involved, this is the man's view. I guess I don't live the typical life so I can't relate to most of what he is talking, complaining or trying to get across what his life is like.

Book started off with Nell running away from life. I should have stopped reading but nope, I plunged on into the never ending Nell find herself saga story. I am all for so many things in this book,
a couple examples, the fight for a simple life and protecting earth and wildlife. The rest of the forbidden love story, just could not get into nor the constant complaint of the cost of things. To many mixed messages in the book for me. I could go on more of why I did not like the book but I don't want to give away to much to others who might like or enjoy the book. It just was not for me.

The book is set in Holt County Colorado and has several Characters. Victoria Roubideaux who is disowned by her Mother when she discovers her daughter is 17 and pregnant. Tom Guthrie who is a school teacher, has two boys and a wife who is not a Mother nor wife. Brothers,Ike and Bobby, their Mother abandoned them and their Father. Bachelor farmers Raymond and Harold McPheron. School teacher Maggie Jones. I wanted to love this book, I just could not keep myself focused. It is hard to pinpoint my dislike. The romance part is not overdone so that is not the problem. I think the big issue is the lack of balance in the story telling. Some scenes draw you in and well put together, other scenes are flat and under developed. The story is raw real look into a rural community with good and bad people who live in them and their struggles with good and bad choices.

First off, I purchased this book just for the beautiful cover, had no idea who the Author was nor what her style was. Science meets poetry, meets myth then swills them all into popular culture. The writing draws you in. Did I fully understand everything I was reading, no, but I did not give up. I will do a re-read just so I can re-think and try and get a better understanding of the full picture of her out of box thinking. I did admire the Author for giving the planets their own chapter. I also liked the glossary at the end of the book. It helped refresh me with some things I had in my brain but don't use very often on science.
Taken from the second chapter, Genesis, "All the while the planets were forming, projectiles flew through the young Solar System like avenging angels." I Love this description.

Chet the dog is still the narrator but not the usual amount. We get to hear Bernie have conversations with others in this quick reading short story. Cute fun story with a little mystery which includes characters, Suzy and Charlie, that pop in and out in other books in the series.

** spoiler alert ** Stowaway is based off the real Nicholas Young, a eleven year old who was found on Captain James Cook ship Endeavour. The book is written in Journal form and starts off in 1768 with Nicholas leaving London and ends in 1771 with Nicholas returning to London. Book is not a fast paced book but an inviting read. The cover of this book is beautiful and has a few illustrations in the pages, nice touch and adds to the adventure.

Taken from the inside jacket cover. "Hollywood, 1938: As soon as she learns that M-G-M is adapting her late husband's masterpiece for the screen, seventy-seven-year-old Maud Gage Baum sets about trying to finagle her way onto the set. Nineteen years after Frank's passing. Maud is the only person who can help the producers stay true to the spirit of the book-because she's the only one left who knows its secrets. "
I normally don't like books that jump back and forth in time but this is one of the rare ones that truly needed it to paint the whole picture. Story starts off in Hollywood in 1938 and changes with each chapter to a place or time in the life of Maud Gage Baum, the widow of Frank Baum, Author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book is a mixture of, heartache, inspiration, strong well, protectors, dreamers with a hint of romance. I feel I can't fully express enough how much I like this book for fear of giving to much away. This is going on my all time favorites.

A very detailed history of Rin Tin Tin and his owner/handler Lee Duncan. It was more about Lee Duncan and all the people who wanted to cash in on the Dog than Rin Tin Tin in parts. I did not like the chapter lay out nor the overly used assuming game. Lots of unnecessary fluff added here and there. I wanted more life put into the story telling, to me it was just stating facts and moving on. I am very tempted to give it one star but I did learn some things and for that I am giving it two stars.

Taken from the book. "He was a ladies' man who never let marriage stand in the way of his affairs, and an artist whose obsession with sex, dance, and death fueled his creative fires even as it worked to destroy him. He was Bob Fosse..." Yet he was much more. The book starts off in his younger years and how he got started in the entertainment business then goes on to him becoming the Bob Fosse that people loved, hated or admired. The book has a lot of information piled into it and I did learn a lot of things about him and made some connections to my own self-doubt and self-destruction tendencies.
Quote from the book, "Had he been able to grasp the truth of it-that these audiences were coming to see Bob Fosse the choreographer rather than Bob Fosse the dancing star- he would have known that the recognition he so coveted was already his."

I enjoyed this book with the few but well done twists and turns. It had me guessing as things unfolded.

1 star
I almost stopped reading this trash many times and yet I kept going until page 279 and then that was it, I'm done. I could care less on how it ends. I will say wonderful writing, I just hate the story and the directions it went into. It is a typical western story line with Cowboys and Indians.

Wonderful story about the Godolphin Arabian a very fast Arabian horse who was one of three stallions that founded the modern Thoroughbred. Great story line for both Children and Adults alike. Moves fast and not overdone with details but does have hardships, abuse and neglect parts.
The story is told by Agba the young mute caretaker of Sham the horse who was later named Godolphin Arabian.

Each chapter is about a family member/members and has a picture of them at the start of the chapter. I loved the stories and that Rick Bragg put with the recipes with step by step instructions making these old-fashioned southern dishes using measurements like "hand full", "dabs” and “smidgens”.
There are lots of quotes that I wish I could share them all but going to just share my favorite one.
"Like a spell, a good breakfast can draw you from the bed no matter how dog-tired and drowsy you are, and make going back to sleep unthinkable, because a hot breakfast only lasts for a fine minute or two, whereas a cold breakfast can disappoint you all day, over and over again. Try to walk past a good hot real breakfast without regret. Try."
So much of this book reminded me growing up with my Grandma watching her cook.
Added to my all time favorites list.

I did not grow up watching his show nor did my kids. I started to know of him because of Quotes that started showing up in articles or books I have read and shows I watch. I enjoyed the quotes so much I started reading books written by him and about him. I then looked up his shows and watched a few.
This book is repetitive and lacks depth of feelings, it is like reading fact after fact. I enjoyed the pictures, shows him at young and off the set, to me this makes him feel real. I did learn more about him but the book just was so flat it did not give justice to Fred Rogers the beautiful soul.

I could not put this down, read in two settings, what a wonderful book. Loretta Lynn is straight forward, honest and she goes places some dare not go. LOVE her and her stories. It is hard to believe Patsy Cline died at the age of 30, way too young. She left us all a gift, her voice. Loretta Lynn was able to put into words on how important Pasty was to her in her life by showing her to be yourself and being a real friend.
I highly recommend this book and have added it to my all time favorites.

I enjoyed this book and have made a couple of the dishes in it but not because the recipe was in the book but because it is something my family has been making and passing down generations. My Ancestors come from Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. My Grandmother was a use what you have on hand, grow in the garden or can find where you are living, in other words, make do. Yes the ingredients and spices are not exact, changes have been made from when they came to the US in the early 1900's.
The overall collection of recipes run from complex to simple, I like that. Book is filled with wonderful pictures showing the dishes, places and people.
Taken from the book." My goal with this cookbook is to show how the whole panorama of Mexico City cuisine can be achieved in any U.S. home kitchen, while giving props to the puestos, fondas, loncherias, taquearias mercados, cantinas and restaurantes that inspired each dish. "

Bryan Cranston starts off the book in a scene in Breaking Bad and walks you through his life and ends with the play All The Way. He puts it all out there, the bad choices, the good choices, regrets, and dealing without and with fame. OH boy has he lived a life! If you are looking for a tell all celebrity brag book, move on. He is a deep thinker with a once damaged but beautiful heart. I highly recommend this book with you are a Breaking Bad fan or a fan of any of his other works. Taken from inside the book"Brynn first fell in love with cheesemaking as a chemistry student in college. She'd taken the class on a lark because she needed the credit. But there was something so magical about the way milk turned to cheese, even though sh understood the chemistry behind it. She couldn't get ideas for cheese out of her mind."
Brynn MacAlister is new to Shenandoah Springs and can't wait to get her organic micro-dairy and cheesing business going. A neighbor dies in a mysterious fire and she starts investigating. Strange things start happening and she finds herself and farm in the middle of it.
Good book, not to many twists and turns and had me guessing to the end. Only one issue, I would have liked a little linking the events together to show a larger picture at the end of the book.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

The Journal Of Joshua Loper, A Black Cowboy (My Name Is America) by Walter Dean Myers
3 stars
This historical fiction book is the diary of sixteen year old Joshua Loper. He dreams of becoming a Cowboy and his dream comes true. His Father is off somewhere else to find a job and has to leave behind his worried Mother. Joshua Loper talks about some of the situations and obstacles they face plus the interactions between him and the other cowboys while on a cattle drive. The book is based loosely off a real cowboy. Some of the story line is off putting but it does give a very real peek into the life of a Cowboy on a Cattle drive.
I have been enjoying reading this series.

Augustus Pelletier's diary starts off May, 1804 at the St. Charles, Louisiana Territory, Missouri River, north bank and ends on November 14,1805. Augustus gives details on the what is expected of him, his thoughts about his interactions with the others on the expedition. Sacajawea is also included in the book which I truly enjoyed, he is able to show her in ways I have yet to find in other books. This fiction book is able to give you a very raw, real look into this adventure. The interactions with the Indians they come in contact with, some are friendly and some are not. The book includes Nonfiction information in the back as well as pictures, this helps you make connections and put faces with the people talked about, nice touch.

Did not like this book even a little bit. Found her writing to be dull and lacking closure on stories. For someone who travels a lot in foreign countries she lacks interaction etiquette and does not heed the warnings from the locals about weather or other things. She also lacks observation skills. I also have a hard time swallowing the alone part in the description, she had people bailing her out, a lot.

I enjoyed parts of the book. The redwoods and the people were fascinating but the writing was choppy and the way the book was put together made it hard to follow a story about the people. Lots of unnecessary filler and just plain boring to read. I could relate to Michael Taylor and enjoyed those parts but at points you feel like you are reading an Autobiography on him and it overshadowed the rest of the book.

It took me awhile to get into the story but I hung in there. Once we got through the everyday living and character development the story just slowly pulled me in. Book begins in Massachusetts, December 1690 and ends May 1735. The strange family relationships compacted with the towns people gives you another prospective on the development on the beginnings and endings of the Witch trials. I must say the book drags at times but I am giving it three stars because I overall enjoyed that book.

I wanted to like this book so much. Isabella Bird tours the Rocky Mountain area of Colorado in the Autumn of 1873. This book is from the letters she wrote to her Sister about what she saw and experienced. She is very judgmental plus she lacks the understanding that not everyone wants to live like she expects them to or thinks they should live. Her interactions with the wild animals are some what funny, they are wild animals, I guess she wanted them to be trained. I will say her descriptions of the land are wonderful but does not save the book. It is filled with stereotypes and she goes without research or understanding of the area, just quick judgement then on to the next.

Daughter of Moloka'i by Alan Brennert
4 stars
Book starts off in 1919 and is the continuing story of Ruth, Daughter of Rachel and Kenji, who both had Leprosy and lived on Kalaupapa, an isolated leprosy settlement. We learned Rachel and Kenji's story in Moloka'i. Sadly Ruth was taken from Rachel and ended up being raised by Nuns at the Kapi'olani Home for Girls. Ruth was eventually adopted by a Japanese couple who live in California. Not going to say much more because I don't want to give anything away. Book ends in 1970 after taking you through, Love, madness, heartbreak, determination, self discovery and more heartbreak. NOT a light read, very emotional book. Alan Brennert did a wonderful job of keeping it real. My only issue is, I wanted more from her family and their feelings about what was going on around them.

Murder in the Mystery Suite
1 star
I stopped reading on page 120, Chapter nine. It has so many characters it is hard to keep up with them on top of what was going on where, when and with whom. It took almost half the book before we got to the Murder and that was predictable. It was just over the top dialog and boring. Such a disappointment. It involves book lovers and it takes place at a retreat for the book lovers, so I wanted to love it.

The Diary of Amber Billows begins on October 20, 1941 and her and her family lived in Washington D.C. and then ends Christmas Day, 1941 while living in Oahu, Hawaii. Book is a typical diary of a teenage girl, she talks about her dislikes and what is going on in her life. Then the dreaded day of December 7,1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Amber talks about that day and what happens to her, her family and friends in the days after.
This, so far, is one of the best in the series. At times I had to remind myself I was reading a fiction book and not a real Diary. Very haunting and raw look at life.

Quote from the book,"From its construction in 1892 to the passing of restrictive immigration laws by Congress in 1921 and 1924, Ellis Island was the gateway where the lives of millions and their concept of America found both confirmation and betrayal."
The book has eight chapters. Each chapter walks you through the different stages of a person’s life pertaining to the getting ready, going to, arriving and life after arriving to Ellis Island. There is not a cohesive story-line that has a beginning and end, it is more of snippets of a person’s story and scattered among the chapters. I don't care for that but I did find the book fascinating. Some of the short stories are haunting, raw, heartbreaking and others beautiful and dreams come true.
Overall this book does not paint a pretty picture of the Ellis Island processing practice. Women complain about the medical screening process which had them stripping down waist up in front of others is one example.

Twelve Days of Terror: A Definitive Investigation of the 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks by Richard G. Fernicola
2 stars
I advise you to read the first three chapters and skip the rest of the book. It is filled with politics, guessing, second guessing and things that have very little or nothing to do with shark attacks. The author is repetitive and stories are either drawn out with unnecessary fluff or snippets of what happened, he is very inconstant.
I am giving it two stars but if you hang in there it has some fascinating facts, stories and information. you just have to wade through the nonsense.

My Grandson picked this out for me at a book sale, he knows I am a Wonder Woman fan. It is a good Children's book. Keeps the story simple and it is the original story line and not the lasted Movie story line. I like both story lines but original needs to be keep alive. The illustrations are cartoon, loved that, keeps with the comic book feel.

This just what I needed, a light fun read. The beginning of the book has a brief history of the Album cover and talks about the different genres and sub genres. The book is filled with some strange, fun, wild and “what were they thinking” album covers. Author gives a little write up on each cover, most the time is the author’s thoughts about the cover but some do have information about the artist, or the musician.
I had no idea that people collect these types of albums but I do now. In the book they are called the forgotten albums.

If you grew up on a farm/ranch or know someone who did then you will get this book. The work is hard and the days long. There is always a story teller among the workers, some of the stories are true, some not and some a mixture of truth and fiction. The kids are kids, the adults are adults and I like that Gary Paulsen kept it real with the interactions of the kids and adults and with life on a working farm.

This is the Diary of Widow Elle Savas, she lost her husband in the Vietnam war. She is raising her mixed race son in a small town and have a hard time trying to make ends meet as a Waitress. Elle meets a man Named William and they start to connect and Elle's Son Dylan really likes him.
Ok,so this not my normal type of book and I have said I just don't like Chick Lit but once again I read a book that proves that wrong. I truly enjoyed this light read. Yes it is predictable and sappy but I just could not turn the pages fast enough.

A lot going on in this book. Sabrina is trying to write her second novel. Some of her friends want to compete in the upcoming Texas Hill Country Senior Pro Rodeo. Her new cat, Hitchcock, seems to be in places he should not be which gets him the nickname Bad Luck Cat. A local business owner is found dead. Sabrina finds herself helping solve yet another mystery on what happened to the dead business owner. The characters are little more rounded in this book and Sabrina has calmed down her approach with people but has not lost her sass and wit. I must say I did not have this one solved until it unfolded, I did have my suspicions on why it happened, which I was right, but was not sure who. Still a fun series.
