A place to discuss books with Witches/Crones in them for our 2020 Reading Challenge.

Leah (flying_monkeys) | 1009 comments One of my favorite (recently published) books with witches is Of Sorrow and Such by Angela Slatter. My review. I found it thanks to Margaret years back and now Angela Slatter is one of my favorite authors.

Does anyone else have a favorite book with witches/crones they'd recommend?

I was planning on reading Circe for the challenge.
It occurred to me another book I read last year and really enjoyed that Has witches and Crones is Wicked Like a Wildfire. Unfortunately the follow up book Fierce Like a Firestorm was disappointing!

Katy (kathy_h) | 882 comments Some books that I have had on my radar for a bit, and am wondering if they might fit the theme and if anyone has read any of them. And I'd really like to know if I should definitely avoid any of these.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
The Witch's Daughter by Paula Brackston
The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike

I wrote this piece about books with Witches: http://www.bronzevillebee.com/2019/10...

Terry Pratchett's witches will always and forever be what I imagine when I hear witch.

wild~rose (wild-rose) | 64 comments I enjoyed The Witches of New York and The Silver Witch Another plug for Circe Also The Bear and the Nightingale and the other two books that form the trilogy.

In terms of Crones for some reason Doris Lessing's The Summer Before the Dark comes to mind. It's more Crone as a state of mind rather than determined by age. The main character has a very Cronish outlook. No magic but lots of wry 'older' woman humor, which is magic in its own way. I will think more on this topic.

Annette | 271 comments How about Ronald Dahl’s The Witches? (I’m on my phone so no link.)

Amanda | 257 comments I've just finished Bina: A Novel in Warnings which would fit with Crones. While she doesn't practice witchcraft, she does assist with something society often takes issue with. A serious book which is frequently funny, and it includes a guest spot from the spirit of David Bowie.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 11 comments Begone the Raggedy Witches, I read this a few months back to my daughter. It's a very unique book.
