colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments How I feel about this book:

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments "Joking" aside - reading In Favour With Their Stars which is pretty decent. I read the first Temeraire book and while I don't htink I'll continue to series, I'm enjoying this AU short story version well enough.

Finished this and all I can say is "d'awww"

I'd be tempted to finish the Temeraire series if she could apply some of the same brevity to those...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments River of Souls - I know nothing of the Wheel of Time series, so this story and all the names meant nothing to me. Failure to make a standalone story, 1.5 stars.

message 155: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina Agreed on the Wheel of Time story.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments The Jester - meh, it was all right but not enough to make me want to go back to that series. 2 stars

Only 3 left!

message 157: by Ala (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ala | 469 comments River of Souls: I don't remember anything about wheel of time except the braid tugging and the god awful middle books slump. This story was...meh. 2 Stars

The Jester: It was ok. I haven't read the authors books yet out of spite for being spammed about it back in the day. 2 Stars.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments The Duel - to say I didn't love the first book of The Magicians would be an understatement, but this short story was pretty decent, especially because I imagined Eliot as the guy from the show, which I actually like and whom I met at a ComicCon and he was super nice.

message 160: by Ala (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ala | 469 comments The Duel: I hate The Magicians. I read three of the books. I hated them all. Fuck Q. This story? I'd probably say it was ok. But it used "for the lulz" and I hate it. 1 Star.

Walker and the Shade of blahblahshutup: I don't even fucking know. I skimmed the shit out of this one. 1 Star.

The Unfettered Knight: I actually kinda dig the idea. Writing was a bit boring though. 2.5-3 Stars.

AND I'M DONE

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM

message 161: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new) - rated it 2 stars

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Walker and Shade - Well, that was pointless. Brooks admits it's pretty much just a scene cut from a book. Doesn't even try to stand on it's own. Stupid. Zero stars.

message 162: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina Why did you read all three Magicians books if you hated them all?

message 163: by Ala (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ala | 469 comments Because I used to be a stupid, stupid person.

I still am, but I used to too.

Nowadays I don't review and DNF all the time, unless it's a group read. Then I'll just bitch at yall.

Felina Unfettered Knight was easily the strongest story of the group. Very interesting idea. Catholic conspiracy is fascinating. I’d definitely want to look into these.

And done. Yay!

Ya know, I actually like that movie even though it's an abomination as an adaptation.

message 170: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina I’ve heard that. I’ve read a little bit of Constantine and would definitely like to read more. I loved the movie. I own the movie. And I should be watching it now.

The recent TV show was a bit more faithful to the character than the movie was. I love Matt Ryan as Constantine.

Did it get cancelled quickly?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Felina wrote: "Did it get cancelled quickly"

It did, sadly. But they've used the character in Arrowverse shows since then. He's a regular on Legends now.

message 175: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (last edited Jan 18, 2020 08:11AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Unfettered Knight - Meh. Interesting idea,s - though nothing particularly original - but I agree with Ala - found the writing kinda boring and predictable. No doubt the witch will end up being (view spoiler). 2.5 - 3 stars

message 176: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina I am watching the movie. Even if this isn’t the ‘real’ Constantine, I love this universe anyway. I’d love to see more of Keanu as this version of Constantine.

Also, I love Shia. I always have. I know he’s kind of a weird duck but he’s a damn delight on film.

Legends is such a stupid, campy show and I love it.

message 179: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina What service is Legends on? We don’t have cable or tv or whatever it’s called now. But we have most of the streaming services which is about the same price as having cable.

message 180: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina Just finished Constantine and I love the idea of a buddy cop movie with Keanu Constantine and Tilda Gabriel. Just seeing Gabriel figure out how to be human would be hilarious.

Netflix. Full name is Legends of Tomorrow

Felina Oh interesting. Well that got past me.

message 183: by Chris , cookie guilt (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I don't know if it has the newest season. I bailed on Arrowverse shows halfway through season 4 of Arrow. Much sooner on Flash and Supergirl

message 184: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina Oh those are all connected. Hmmm. It takes a lot to get me into the CW stuff. Is everybody, even the gas station attendant, freakishly attractive?

message 185: by Chris , cookie guilt (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Generally so.

Im not sure how connected they are. I know of 2 characters that started on Arrow and ended up on Legends.

I loved first two seasons of Arrow but they lost me later on.

message 186: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new) - rated it 2 stars

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments They're connected in that they're in the same universe, and names get dropped, but they're generally standalone except for the crossover episodes.

Samesies.

The first season was tough, cause it took itself too seriously and the hawk people were terrible.

But once they embraced their ridiculousness, it got much better.

I've read the entire 14 book sequence, and had the same reaction. In the intro, Sanderson says it's a deleted scene. That was a very wise choice.

message 191: by Chris , cookie guilt (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments DNFd the Novak story, blech.

Skipped The Jester because I've read it a couple of times.

message 194: by Chris , cookie guilt (new) - rated it 3 stars

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments The Duel was pretty cool, but the Walker and the Shade of a Story...eck. Brooks all but said it was dreck.

This book is like a set of deleted scenes on a DVD. Might be a good one every now and then, but it's pretty obvious why they were deleted for the most part.

Yes!

And it's like watching the deleted scenes without having watched the movie.

message 196: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina That’s very true. I didn’t like most of these cause they had no context.

message 197: by Chris , cookie guilt (new) - rated it 3 stars

Best of all, I'm finished 🥁🥁

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I stalled out completely on this. Still on the music story.

Interest zero, especially after seeing all of the meh in this thread.
