Joy | 24 comments I think this book was purchased in the late 1980s or early '90s through a school book order, maybe Scholastic Book Club. Unidentified children arrive all over Earth. Some are adopted. Some are deformed and don't survive. The story is told from the point of view of a boy whose family adopts two mystery children, a boy and a girl. The narrator also has a biological sister. The mystery children came to earth in clay vessels; the ground where they crashed has healing powers. (At one point, one of the kids injures his foot with an axe, and the boy from space packs the dirt from the crash site into the wound and heals it.) The children age quickly and are very strong, but they can die if they overexert themselves. One boy collapses and dies after winning a race. They also discover that mystery children all over the earth recognize each other from pictures, and I think they all have dreams about going through the stars, which might be memories. SPOILER: In the end of the story, the next generation (children of the mystery children) are taken up into space in a beam of light and aren't seen again. The narrator speculates that an ancient society sent people to populate another planet, and when the people on the planet became inbred, they sent their children back to earth to have stronger, healthier children they could send back to the planet. But the narrator's sister, who I think was the mother of one of the children who went up in the light beam, says he may or may not be right. The book doesn't tell the reader whether the narrator's guess is right. (When I say narrator, I'm not sure if it was told in first person, or limited third person with this boy as the main character.)
