Brenda | 3 comments I started this book some 10+ years ago, but it was someone else's library book, so I didn't get a chance to finish, and I don't remember the title. It was set on the moon, but it never openly said that, it was implied by describing a dusty, cratered landscape, constant stars in the sky, patterns of night and day, etc. Also, although the air was thin, no one wore a spacesuit, which was never explained. As the book opens two young girls, one of whom is a servant to the other are out collecting....something, I don't remember what. And suddenly a winged vampire comes out of the sky and kidnaps one, leaving the other to go back and explain to the girl's parents, who say, essentially, 'Why wasn't it you taken instead of our daughter?' So, the guilt stricken servant girl goes to the vampire's castle and offers to work for him hoping to get a chance to rescue the other girl, who has been made one of the vampire's 7 wives. Or maybe it was 15, I don't remember. Anyway, all of the vampire's wives look alike, withered and gray, because he's sucked away their happiness, or memories possibly, so she ends up staying there for several months, weaving them clothes out of nothing because she can't tell which wife is her friend. Eventually she meets someone else who lives in the castle garden, either a living gargoyle, or talking rodent or some character like that, and she comes out of her depression, and the wives start to remember who they are because of her, and once she meets this friend she can weave them clothes out of happiness instead of nothing, but they tell her they want her to help them escape, or they won't tell her which one is her friend. And that was as far as I got. It MIGHT, emphasis on MIGHT have been the first of a series, but it was much more serious, thoughtful, and even literary than all these 'paranormal YA romance' series with vampire heroes that popped up after twilight. And I don't think that there was any romance between the girl and the vampire. In fact, almost no interaction between them after the scene where she asks to be his servant and he agrees since she's too plain to be one of his wives.
I sure hope someone recognizes this plot, because I've been wondering about this book for years, sort of like waiting for Robert Jordan to come out with the next Wheel of Time.

Brenda | 3 comments The third time? really? Almost like it's popular, but the title wasn't memorable enough

It's an unusual book, as you say -- moon vampires aren't exactly mainstream :) But for those who have read it, it tends to stick in the mind, perhaps for that very reason.
