I read it quite a while ago. There's a movie based on it too.
There Are 3 children, two girls and a boy. One girl is like 16, the boy 14 prob and the youngest is 2-3 i guess. There were on the beach when their house caught fire. Their parents died and they were thrown into an orphanage. There's a guy, who looks like an absolute freak(lol), he has long hair and rotten crooked teeth, kinda looks like filch from Harry Potter, well he adopts them. He soon learns of their wealth and tries to kill them. He tries leaving them locked in his car in the middle of the railway track. But they're smart they figure out a way to change the track of the train. Then he tries to marry the girl but again they dodge him. The orphanage sets them up with a woman who lives in a wooden house on the edge of the sea. But the freaky guy finds them there and tries to take the children but the woman tries to fight him. Her house had weak roots and it starts falling and the leeches in the sea eat her. Then they're adopted by an animal enthusiast who has all kinds of animals and reptiles in his house. His cobra eats the freaky guy(i guess) and they live happily ever after.
