SOLVED. YA medieval fiction with main character peasant girl- Death is a character. [s]

Hi! I read this book about 10 years ago (but I would guess it was published before that) about a peasant girl who lives in medieval times (I think England) and there is some sickness coming to her village. She keeps seeing a white stag (I think).

Eventually she realizes that she has been spending time with Death who appears to her as a noble, maybe a bit sad, lord. There may be a bargain involved?

The cover was a Romantic-era ish painting of a woman (maybe with red hair) in a medieval looking gown.
