The Secret of Dragonhome by John Peel. It's apparently been asked about here no less than twice several years ago. (One of my spoilers clearly does come from another book, but I'll save that for another time since I don't have anything else to go with it.)
I have a memory of this book and in this memory it's all just one book, I believe it is the first in a series? A girl learns that she can speak to or understand animals. She has a younger brother who can't really seem to do anything, and it seems perhaps strange that he can't? She leaves home for whatever reason, possibly with the brother?
At one point she is captured along with several other girls who are also magical. Vital detail to the story that I'll hide just in case, though ultimately I don't think it's actually too much of a spoiler. (view spoiler)[I remember a very specific moment where the girls band together to escape, and one of the talents of a girl is to detect vital things or the like, and she can spot the keystone that holds a wall or the keep up, so they know to destroy that stone to bring everything crumbling down. (hide spoiler)]
A big plot point, but I'll put it under a spoiler in case it's too important? (view spoiler)[At some point she needs to acquire a dragon's heart? I think ultimately the dragons gives it to her? (hide spoiler)]
Somewhere along the lines, there is an ornery prince. (view spoiler)[I believe she eventually marries him? (hide spoiler)]
A big end discovery: (view spoiler)[In the end, I believe it's discovered that the brother actually possesses the very dangerous trait of persuasion and manipulating people. Perhaps he's ended up manipulating a woman who isn't so nice? (hide spoiler)]
I truly apologize if I've somehow ended up combining three different books into one in my head. I've come across several books that start out sounding like it could be the one, but after I get past a sentence or two of description, it's all wrong. Maybe this is because the memories are so confused. Thank you so much for taking the time to help!
