Ugh, I am already behind on my list .... Otherworld is going super slow for some reason. I think "video game" type books are just not for me. Stupid Popsugar prompt :p

message 53: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I'm reading Quarantine by Greg Egan now.. this is the last book I need for my ABC challenge..

I'm going to try the Popsugar challenge next year. I never even knew it existed until I joined Goodreads! Of course I never heard of the ABC challenge either...

Shelby Suderman | 2181 comments I had to switch to an audiobook for a while today so I started An Unwanted Guest. Made it to 28% in that today.

I reached 22% in Good Omens yesterday, but didn't bother to post. I read more of it today and made it to 39%. Hopefully I can get much more done tomorrow. I've got six days left before it expires.

I finished listening to The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J.R.R. Tolkien this morning and started listening to The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon .
I'm about 65% through Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts and about 80 pages into China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan . Boy I need a kick in the pants! lol

message 56: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I listened to A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and read 90 pages of Pacific Destiny The Three-Century Journey to the Oregon Country by Dale L. Walker , 76 pages of A Great and Noble Scheme The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from Their American Homeland by John Mack Faragher , and 25 pages of 1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman . I'm having a good time reading, but if I don't do a better job focusing I'm going to miss my goal!

I made good progress with Sense and Sensibility using a combo of listening and reading. I started Planet of the Apes and feel like I am reading a game changer in literature. I am still stalled on Watchmen because it is a physical book and I've been barely at home and on Otherworld because I don't seem to be able to get into it.

Sarah B | 391 comments I read Good Omens before and I had a hard time reading it. I just found it incredibly boring and dull..I know most people seemed to love it and found it funny but not me.

A lot of books I fly through but some are very hard for me to read.

I have not read anything yet today. Been too busy..going to see if I can get some reading done now.

Besides reading Quarantine I also have "The Bounty the True story of the Mutiny on the Bounty" by Caroline Alexander here to read. The book is as fat at a dictionary! I might try to make some progress on it tonight as it will be due soon.

message 59: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Well here is the progress I made:

The Bounty: page 122 of 776

Gaiman is not my favorite (except his middle grade!). I just don't "get" the dry, British humor. lol. Douglas Adams is the same. I've only read one Terry Pratchett short story collection so the jury is still out on him. But Good Omens read like a Gaiman book so I didn't love it either.

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I remember reading some of Pratchett's Discworld novels when I was a teen or in my 20s... I remember liking the ones with a particular group of characters. But I loved the 2 Discworld movies! I have them on DVD.

But I could not stand the Douglas Adams movie of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" at all. It totally bored me.

Guys, y'all are killing me! Neil Gaiman is one of my absolute favorite authors and Good Omens is one of my favorite books, lol. Now, I did grow up being surrounded by British humor (Dad would laugh until he cried, though Mom was indifferent to most of it), so there's that... Still, every time someone says that they "don't get it" (which is not the same as "I didn't enjoy it") I just want to appear in a puff of smoke with snacks, beverages and a huge stack of books and analyze the heck out of everything. Logically I know that not everyone will enjoy the same things as I do. Emotionally... I'm working on it ;)

And Sarah, I totally agree about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is another of my favorite books but that movie was awful. In fact, there's a BBC production that is pretty awful, too. I don't think that story translates well on to the screen.

Oh, and I finished another 25 pages of 1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman at bedtime :)

I finished listening to The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon this morning and started listening to Zero G by Dan Wells .
Not much progress in Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts and China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan .

I'm with Stacie! Gaiman is a genius and his books are like sunshine - essential for me to live. Not all his adult novels are "dry British humor" either if you are inclined to try another book by him. I'd suggest Neverwhere (my favorite!) which is more of a dark fantasy, Ocean at the End of the Lane which is more like stream of consciousness in a novel form and Stardust which is just the cutest fantasy love story!

Look I've only read Coraline, Stardust, Good Omens, and American Gods. Loved the first 2, GO was fine, did not like AG. So I don't have a lot go on but what I DIDN'T like really stuck with me. lol. I haven't sworn him off, I still plan on reading Ocean, Neverwhere, Sandman, Norse Mythology, Graveyard Book, etc. Oh and I LOVED View from the Cheap Seats. lol.

Lori I'm in, I need to read 42 books to make my challenge for the year. I don't think I'm going to make it, but I will be happy with finishing my netgalley list. I will post as I go.

Interesting. American Gods to me is much different from most of his book. The feel is much more like McCarthy's The Road or some Faulkner books. Ocean at the End of the Lane wasn't really for me. I love the Sandman series and really enjoyed the graphic novel adaptation of the Graveyard Book as well.

I do agree that books based on sarcasm (GO, Hitchhiker's Guide, Catch-22) are hit or miss for me as well. I enjoyed GO for example but couldn't even make it through Catch-22.

Shelby Suderman | 2181 comments I'm here and there with satirical fantasy and scifi.

The only other Gaiman books I've read are Coraline, which was great, and Ocean at the End of the Lane, which was okay.

I was meh on Hitchhiker's Guide, didn't see the movie. I'm probably the only one who doesn't care for the Princess Bride movie. Not sure I'll bother with the book.

I really like the Lady Janies books.

I'm liking Good Omens so far. I'm planning to give Discworld a try next year.

I've been sick this week, but it was bad yesterday so no reading yesterday. Mostly spent the day sitting in the dark and resting. Still sick today, but I'm hoping I can manage more in Good Omens.

Sarah B | 391 comments Stacie, if it makes you feel better I do like some British stuff. I like Mr Bean. While not a book I do find him very funny. And I love some British TV shows, like Primeval.. and Walking with Dinosaurs. I think the Horatio Hornblower series was made by BBC too. and course the pretty ships they made in the Age of Sail.. in fact I'm reading about the Bounty, which was commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh. He was sent to Tahiti to get breadfruit and to bring it back to the West Indies. But his ship was small, he was delayed leaving port for three weeks by the Admiralty, he had no Marines on board and worse he was not a captain. Plus lots of the crew hired looked suspiciously like pirates with scars on the faces. I managed to read a bit while out today so now I'm on page 151.

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I've caught whatever is going around so I took a sick day. Good news: I got a ton of reading done. Bad news: it was not on anything I'd already started! (My bag with my book was in my sister's car so I had to pick something at home... fortunately I had lots to choose from, LOL)

I got 275 pages of How Rome Fell Death of a Superpower by Adrian Goldsworthy read, and I expect to finish it today. Let me tell you, this guy deserves all the praise he's gotten. This book covers a huge chunk of time, with lots of complicated political maneuverings where many of the principle players have almost the same names... and manages to remain coherent. (I'm pretty sure this is going so quickly because I've already got a pretty good base in the subject and no inclination to leave my blanket nest! Whatever the reason, I'll take it because otherwise I turn into a whiny 3 year old when I'm sick!)

I love Mr. Bean! And Rowan Atkinson in general. Have you watched any of his Blackadder stuff? It's great, and it's even funnier if you know any of the history he is lampooning (there's this one bit where he is talking to Queen Elizabeth about his latest discoveries and gives her a boomerang...)

On a book related note, that book on the Bounty looks interesting!

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I've never seen Blackadder but I've heard of it before. I mostly watch stuff on DVD - I don't have Cable. I've seen some of his other movies where he plays other characters besides Mr Bean.

The book on the Bounty is very interesting, esp if you like history. It's not a novel. It's the true story and it goes into great detail of what happened and why. It also includes poems written by one of the men's sister while he was locked up waiting for trial. And even after the trials were over it explains what happened, the political climate at the time and how things were greatly different when William Bligh returned to England after his second trip to Tahiti on the breadfruit mission. In a way it's kind of crazy, as the entire mutiny might have been caused by a single coconut! After reading this book you really understand what happened and how things were done back then. Did you know that Capt Cook is the one who started the thing about personal hygiene? And Bligh continued it on his ship. He made the sailors wash, wash their clothes and bedding...but they hated the hours of dancing in the evening!! Personally I don't blame them...I would think they would be tired from doing the hard labor all day on the ship?

According to 23 and me, a big chunk of my ancestors were British! Which I never knew! But I've always enjoyed the movies with the BRN. 😁

Shelby Suderman | 2181 comments Started reading Girls of Paper and Fire (Girls of Paper and Fire #1) by Natasha Ngan before I’m off to bed. Finished to the end of chapter 1, which puts me on page 12.

I’m liking this fantasy world so far. It’s been a while since I read high fantasy, and I don’t think I’ve read one based on Malaysian culture. The closest I’ve probably come is when I attempted Journey to the West this year.

I know the trigger warnings for this one going in, so I’m prepared. I’m expecting it to be pretty dark.

I decided to check out the sequel from the library too in the off chance I want to go right into it after this one.

I partly decided to pick this off my tbr because I really wanted a physical book to read at the end of this year so I could use one of the magnetic bookmarks I got off Etsy as a birthday present. I’ve been reading a lot of ebooks the past few months, so I haven’t had the chance.
