I’m looking forward to doing Bingo again this year. This years card is outstanding. Katy does an excellent bingo card every year, but this one just feels right. 2019 was not a good reading year me and I am going to do better come 2020. I also plan on focusing on my personal bookshelf. Except for new group selections purchased or picked up from the library, I plan to use book I already own.

I'm a work in progress, never enough time in the day.

I will get the skeleton put together today, but the planning, now that will take a while. The sad thing with Bingo planning is that it gets so easy to set aside a pre-picked selection when something better comes along. I guess I'm just fickle

Storage of ideas(view spoiler)

Veronique | 1154 comments Not fickle. Totally normal :0)
I also want to focus next year on books I already own, which is a lot.

Good luck with your challenge

Thanks, my planning has started, I'm surprised how many books I own are working out

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments Great list of choices Bob. I loved 84 Charing Cross Road so much. I hope you end up reading that one.

Many of your choices were 4-4.5 star reads for me.

I'm glad you can fit many of the books you own into this challenge!

Joseph Fountain | 296 comments For I2, Ill suggest An American Tragedy since it's already on your TBR.

Philina | 1085 comments The book about Roosevelt sounds interesting. I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, but I love podcasts, especially about history. History on Fire has a great podcast episode about Roosevelt. Sadly, now it's paid subscription only.

Well I'm as ready as I can be for the 1st. Most of my choices I own and I have three on hold at my library.

Please, I do ask for recommendations for I2: Group Bingo Participant Pick. Not necessarily something form my TBR, I'm just, if not more interested in something you consider a favorite. Thanks in advance.

message 17: by Susan O (last edited Dec 23, 2019 07:50AM) (new)

Susan O (sozmore) Looks like a great start. I really loved Pavilion of Women and passed it on to my sisters. It's not just for women either obviously.

Another one I really liked was All the King's Men. As a southerner I loved his descriptions of life in the South. This year I finally finished a biography of Huey Long, who Warren's book is supposed to be based on. Definitely an intriguing character.

I am definitely a nonfiction reader and both Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History and Mornings on Horseback: The Story of an Extraordinary Family, a Vanished Way of Life, and the Unique Child Who Became Theodore Roosevelt are excellent by two great writers, Larson and McCullough.

message 18: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5458 comments One short book recommendation deserves another, and since I'll be reading your Oscar Wilde recommendation this week, I'll recommend a short one for you: The Lion in Winter. I just finished it, and it's especially great if you've seen the movie with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn, but even if you haven't, it's really fun!

Susan O wrote: "Looks like a great start. I really loved Pavilion of Women and passed it on to my sisters. It's not just for women either obviously...."

Susan, I have a couple of books by Buck, Pavilion of Women and Mandala. My mother listed 6 books she loved when she was in high school. The Good Earth was one of those six books. After reading The Good Earth I always keep Buck in the back of my mind when hunting thrift shops and used books stores. I’m glad to know Pavilion will be a good read.

All the King's Men is one of those books one hears about over the years, it’s a Pulitzer, and an easy purchase when the low cost bargain comes along. I’ve had it for years and I’m hoping this will be the year I read it.

I used to read a good bit of nonfiction, but I’ve neglected it for the last four or five years. I’m happy my choices will not be a waste of time, but I’ll probably only read one of them.

Thanks for your insights.

"84 Charing Cross Road" is defiantly on my reading list for 2020. "The God of Small Things" is likely but still a maybe. However it is hard to ignore your statement of "one of the best books ever written!" As for "The Lover," I don't have a strong affinity for it, but it does fit a couple of squares. It is one of those books I no nothing about except seeing it on Goodreads repeatedly. Saw it a used book store and now we'll see. Most likely since it is so short I will give it a read.

Thanks for your input and advise.

Still going strong this year, another month finished and two more Bingos. I have the 3-Row and one diagonal. I have completed 18/25 towards a blackout

3-Row
B3: Tartuffe by Molière , I3: A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry , N3: Old Yeller by Fred Gipson G3: Sonnets from the Portugese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning , O3: Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Diagonal
O1: South The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917 by Ernest Shackleton G2: The Lady with the Little Dog by Anton Chekhov N3: Old Yeller by Fred Gipson I4: Stoner by John Williams , B5: Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, #2) by Lewis Carroll

Does anyone have a suggestion for B2 Classic Tragedy?

Of Mice and Men, Things Fall Apart, Madame Bovary, Effi Briest, Kabale und Liebe, Wide Sargasso Sea, Oroonoko or Tess of the D'Urbervilles for the Tragedy corner? All of those are not classical tragedies, but all contain rather sad life stories with "tragic" endings.

message 46: by Bob, Short Story Classics (new)

Bob | 4602 comments Mod
Thank you all for the encouragement. I admit I have been on a tear this year, so much better than last year. Who knows why we get into slumps, but all last year I was off my game. This year’s reading volume is misleading since I have read so many short stories, but I have enjoyed them a great deal. To really gauge how well I’m doing. I guess a hard core analysis of total number of pages read will tell the story.

I have read Anna Karenina a true favorite, The Remains of the Day, Of Mice and Men another favorite, Things Fall Apart, Madame Bovary, Wide Sargasso Sea, and liked even more than Anna K, and M&M is Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Anna K, Tess, and Mice and Men are solid five star reads I consider them favorites. The others I’ve read are all good reading and easy recommendations. And thanks to Philina, it looks like I have three more for the TBR.

I had considered using Never Let Me Go as my N2: Winner of a Foreign Literary Prize square. Until I realized it was not a Booker Prize winner, just a nominee. Now, I plan on finding out what is tragic about the story. It also gives me the letter “I” in the A-Z Author challenge. You got to love twofers.

It was in last years Bingo challenge that Kathleen recommended Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead. I read it, I thought it was great, and now I’m hooked for the rest of the series. By the way Gilead #4 Jack is set to publish this October. When will I ever get to Housekeeping? Who knows, but I hope to read the rest of the Gilead series first.

I hope you like Never Let Me Go as much as I did. It is a departure from the norm and so well done.
