Last year you said you were in a slump, but this year you have definitely overcome the slump and come out swinging! Congratulations on your Bingos.

Wow. You are going to have all these challenges finished way before mid-year. What are you going to do with yourself then? :)

Maybe I'll take up skydiving, but since. I don't like heights, I'll stick to reading.

Marilyn | 720 comments Ooooo! The Midwich Cuckoos. That's a good one.

Instead of skydiving, I've decided to try another Bingo card. That decision is already causing me heart palpitations.

Yes, Cuckoos is good. I also liked The Day of the Triffids. Never enough time for science fiction, its nice when it's part of the challenge

Bully for you! Can't wait to see your choices for the next card. You have had some fantastic reads for this one.

message 63: by Terris (new)

Terris | 4385 comments AND if you like John Wyndham you should try Chocky! It's another of his that I enjoyed, and it's only about 150 pages :)

message 64: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 1567 comments I loved Chocky! It's a wonderful little book!

message 65: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5458 comments Bob, this is really something! Congratulations on so much good reading. You're further in your second card than I am in my first! And David Copperfield is a special favorite of mine--hope you're enjoying it.

Another month is finished. On my first card I currently have 23/25 squares completed. For a Blackout I need N2: Winner of a Foreign Literary Prize and G4: Banned Book. My thoughts right now are to read The Blind Assassin, Booker Award 2000 for N2, and the Bastard Out of Carolina for G4. Any suggestions or am I OK.

Not sure when I will start these, or if I will change my choices. One thing is sure I haven’t stuck to a plan this year. Many of my Decembers planned books have been substituted for something else. But I sure have read some good stuff. So far this year I have 12, 5 star reads. That’s only two less than the last two years combined.

My second bingo card is currently at 9/25 squares completed, no Bingo, but three of these are 5 stars. I should play the lottery as lucky as I have been at picking books. I won’t be using the same book on the two cards. If I get two blackouts it will be with 50 different reads. It would be a lot easier to just switch squares and use the some book twice.

message 67: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn | 720 comments I suggest staying with Bastard Out of Carolina.

message 68: by Laurie (new)

Laurie | 1895 comments Bob, I gave Bastard Out of Carolina 5 stars but it a tough book to read. The Blind Assassin was jus so-so for me.

message 69: by Liesl (new)

Liesl | 250 comments I just read The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai for N2. It won the Booker Prize. I highly recommend it.

I was the opposite of Laurie, Bob. I loved The Blind Assassin but a bit disappointed with Bastard Out of Carolina.

I'm reading the last two for a blackout on card #1. Bastard Out of Carolina is about half finished and I started The Blind Assassin this morning. I hope to finish in two weeks give or take, BOoC is somewhat slow, but based on this morning Assassin my go fast.

Card #2 is at 14/25 No Bingo.

My last book for a blackout is Bastard Out of Carolina. Only about 100 pages left but I've been procrastinating, it's to interesting to abandon, but I'm not deeply invested. I started it before The Blind Assassin, which is now finished and I have read three-quarters of The Glimpses of the Moon. Need to just finish this one up. I'll focus on it today and tomorrow

I am in the minority of people who didn't particularly care for Bastard Out of Carolina. I didn't hate it, but I also never got invested. I loved The Blind Assassin and Glimpses of the Moon, so I'm anxious to read your reviews.

So glad you said favorite(s) and not favorite. It would be hard to pick only one. Selecting these kind of depends on where my eye fall first. The books that jump to mind at first glance are:

Old Yeller
Stoner
The End of the Affair
and maybe because it was next to last for blackout-
The Blind Assassin

The next group that jump out at me are:

A Death in the Family
A Raisin in the Sun
The Midwich Cuckoos
and
Dandelion Wine

As for picking just one of these... I guess, put the names in a hat and anyone drawn would do.

At the rate you are going, you will be needing a Card #3.

You have had some smashing reads this year. I'm promising myself Dandelion Wine before the year is up--you and Kathleen have convinced me I simply cannot miss it.

I'm glad to see Dandelion Wine made the cut, and Old Yeller too--I'm determined to read (re-read probably but I don't remember) it soon.

Hope Glimpses of the Moon was good!

Sara, Dandelion Wine is like a pleasant walk in the park, it just feels good. I think you will enjoy it.

I’ll admit to going off the deep end just a bit with my challenges, some might question my sanity. But years ago “my mother hadn’t had me tested” to prove I’m OK. If I’m foolish enough to start a third bingo card, my family may think it is time to have me retested. Since I fear the results I’ll play it safe and stick to what I’ve already committed too.
