Fantasy /YA rescue just barely fails to work

So all I can remember is that there' s girl who was kidnapped and her love interests spends a bunch of time looking for her and when he finally figures out where she is and goes there guns blazing to find her, she's just been barely moved. I think the girl has been communicating with him mentally and is just wiped out or knocked out right before and can't do that anymore right before he finds the old location. So a near miss resuce from a kidnapping.

I read a bunch of Brandon Sanderson and things like that... I probably read it around 2014.
