It was a long, long audiobook. There were over thirty characters between the story-inside-a-story format. It was interesting, but whew, not a great toppler book. The two audiobook narrators were very good though.

Hopefully, I can get back on track for my badge two books with my next toppler finish.

I did not particularly like the story. It was interesting though, but difficult to read in places, where there was no punctuation at all. It was a strange story about a black woman who tried to kill her children when a group of white men came to take her and her children back into slavery after she had escaped into the free north. It was much more than that, but the underlaying theme was that she loved her children too much to want to see them go back and be used, as she and her family had been.

I just really do not enjoy these kinds of cozy mysteries. You may enjoy it more. The audiobook narrator was fine. I just thought it was a stupid story.

This is my third Wallander book, and the longest one yet. It was a fascinating story that took place in Sweden and South Africa and revolved around the murder of a woman in Sweden and a plot to kill Nelson Mandela, It was published a year before he ran for office in South Africa.

I'm not a huge fan of cozy mysteries. I prefer gritty mysteries. If a cozy tickles my funny bone like the Miss Fortune series, I'll be all over it though.

I found Hallowe'en Party
Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot, #39) by Agatha Christie

Unfortunately, my library doesn't carry an edition with that cover. I could buy the kindle edition from Amazon, but I don't want to buy. I'll wait until I have to make a decision.

But it's book #13, and I've only read as far as book 4. It's not likely I'll get 9 books done between now and then. But, it's hard to say what a motivated person can do.

I had already read that one, Janice. I think I had a paperback that I had bought at a library sale. Let me look and see if I still have it in a bag. I may have given it away. I really liked it.

I have found that most cozy mystery series do not need to be read in order, if it is only one that you need for a challenge. The characters just do not change that much over time.

Other series, like Mercy Thompson, really need to be read in order. I had read the first book, and then accidently got book #8 and listened to it, before I realized that a significant event had happened. It has been fun going back to pick them up in order to see what had happened.

I have really enjoyed the humor and great imagination of the author in the creation of this trilogy and the awesome characters - all daughters of famous evil fathers. I have laughed out loud at the dialogue in the narration. Kate Reading gave a very talented performance in all three books. This last one wandered on a little too much, but on the whole it is a solid 4 star trilogy.

It is all good, I guess. It is hard to waste one, if it fits a task, even when you have to bump off another book that had been "planned". That is how I see it, anyway. We just keep posting books until we come up with enough to fill up a card. So far, I have not read more than two books on any one card. At some point we have to finish the 18 books for Badge 2, because we cannot apply for Badge 3 until the previous requirement is met. I guess we keep posting books for Badge 3 until 5 cards are completely done. It could get messy having to move them around for badge 4 then. I think I can track mine pretty well, but it seems like other people do not keep a list. At least as far as I can tell, anyway. I really never thought to go beyond Badge 3 because I cannot usually read that many books in a year. Unless we start assuming some more discipline, we are going to have a lot of tasks left over. I have a couple of cards that I do not really want to read any books for, even though I found titles for the tasks.

Another happy audiobook selection when I was looking for something to listen to. The story takes place over the course of a year in 1937-1938. The Japanese are invading China. The young man in the story has tuburlocsis and is sent from Hong Kong during the sweltering summer to go stay in the small fishing village on the coast of Japan. The family owns a tiny house, maintained by a long time family retainer, who lives there alone to take care of the house and garden. The story was beautifully narrated by David Shih.

The story talks place in Limehouse, an ugly and poor area of London of the 1880s. Dark, dirty, dank and dangerous except when the Chinese are celebrating Chinese New Year, then it is less dirty and dark but still dangerous.

I think this is the first time in quite a while that GR did not have a matching audiobook cover. I can usually find the same cover on an audiobook as on a hardcover or paperback copy. Good thing the cover did not matter for this task.

I was confused listening to only the audiobook, so I borrowed a copy of the text from my library. It was much better after that, but still confusing. By the end, though, I loved it. I haven't read any of the Outlander books, I didn't realize they were that long.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Some of them are quite long, but The Fiery Cross is the longest that I know of. An Echo in the Bone is over 1000 pages. The first couple are not quite so long. I have #6 "planned" for a slot on my challenge. It has been a long time since I read #5 but I still remember what was going on.

I read Les Miserables a long time ago. (I have been thinking of listening to the audiobook.) I think The Count of Monte Cristo was quite a long one. The copy in my high school library was printed on tissue thin paper and was over 1000 pages too.
