Wagtail, Virginia, the top pet-friendly getaway in the United States, is gearing up for a howling good Halloween—until a spooky murder shakes the town to its core . . .
Holly Miller doesn’t believe in spirits, but the Sugar Maple Inn is filled with guests who do. The TV series in development, Apparition Apprehenders, has descended on Wagtail’s annual Halloween festivities to investigate supernatural local legends, and Holly has her hands full showing the ghost hunters a scary-fun time.
But the frights turn real when Holly’s Jack Russell, Trixie, and kitten, Twinkletoes, find a young woman drowned in the Wagtail Springs Hotel’s bathhouse—the spot of the town’s most infamous haunting. The crime scene is eerily similar to the creepy legend, convincing Holly that the death wasn’t just accidental. Now she’ll have to race to catch a flesh-and-blood killer—before someone else in town gives up the ghost . . .

A super-fun and really cute cozy mystery. There's so much I enjoyed in this one--the ghost hunters that are filming a TV show; the lovely inn they're staying at that not only caters to humans but to pets, as well; lots of adorable cats and dogs; ghostly legends; lots of Halloween activities. And it's all set in the pet-friendly town of Wagtail, Virginia. A wonderful read for Halloween.
It's Halloween in Wagtail, VA and the Sugar Maple Inn is hosting a group of ghost hunters. Holly Miller doesn't believe in ghosts, but she knows the Apparition Apprehenders and their proposed television series will bring tourists and money to Wagtail. Just as the spooky festivities for humans and pets alike are ramping up, one of the inn's guests is found dead in the bathhouse of a reportedly haunted old hotel in town. How did someone drown in two feet of water? And is there a murderer lurking in Wagtail?
The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer is the second book in this series. There are currently five books in the Paws & Claws series, with a new book, The Dog Who Knew Too Much, coming out in November 2019.
Holly is putting her life back together after breaking off a relationship, leaving her job, and moving back to Wagtail to help her grandmother run the Sugar Maple Inn. She hasn't even unpacked her stuff...boxes are everywhere in her apartment at the inn. I had to sympathize with her....I hate moving. I hate unpacking. I would be sitting there amidst a huge stack of boxes too. Holly is an intelligent and interesting main character....but I really, really wish The Ben would just go away. Some former boyfriends just don't know when to disappear and not come back. The Ben makes an appearance in The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer, and I kept wanting desperately to magically hop into the book just long enough to tell Holly to boot his butt out of the inn and move on. And she's pining over her long-time friend who is engaged to someone else. That causes just as many eye-rolls for me as The Ben. The romance part of this series just annoys me. Please, please, please just let Holly figure out what she wants.....and don't form any love triangles. Too many cozy series try that bit..... No, Holly....please no. Please, please No. :)
Fun, entertaining read. I love Halloween so I enjoyed the background theme of fall festivities in Wagtail. The murder mystery interwoven in with ghost hunters really made this a fun book to read. There were plenty of suspects.....an interesting side plot.....and some nice character development.
I listened to the audio version (Tantor Audio) of this book. Narrated by Jeanie Kanaley, the audio is just a bit over 10 hours long. Kanaley reads at a nice even pace, although it took me awhile to get used to her reading style and voice. At times she seemed to be over-enunciating her words just a bit with a constant high pitch to her voice....like she was reading a cutesie children's book to elementary kids rather than reading an adult cozy mystery, if that makes sense. After I got an hour or so into the story, it stopped annoying me....but I really had problems getting into the book at first because of the narrator's reading.
Great story! I have a review copy of the new book coming out this fall waiting for me....so on to book 3, Murder Most Howl!
The story started out really good, but in the middle slowed down and became tedious with descriptions of every meal, every outfit worn and repetitive clues. The ending was all over the place. I did enjoy the cats and dogs.
I’m really loving this series! This is book#2 in this series. I really enjoyed visiting the town of Wagtail again with Holly and her grandmother at the Sugarmaple Inn. The town and its neighbors are so sweet and friendly, and I love that it is a pet centered town. The murder mystery was very good and contained a mystery within a mystery. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Howloween in Wagtail, VA finds the Sugar Maple Inn hosting a group developing a TV series--Apparition Apprehenders. They're in Wagtail to investigate rumors of paranormal activity. Holly Miller has moved into the Inn her grandmother, Liesel 'Oma' owns; bringing her dog, Trixie, and cat, Twinkletoes. Sugar Maple Inn is a speciality inn designed for pet owners to bring their beloved pets to enjoy the royal treatment, one and all. One of the guests, Eva, is a ghost debunker who brings her Siamese cat, Mrs. Mewer, and Holly likes both of them. When a suspicious death occurs near the supposedly haunted Wagtail Springs Hotel, cobwebs are cast about Eva. Can Holly and her friends sweep them away and clear Eva's name? In a sub-plot, an old friend of Holly's, Clementine, is going through a bad divorce, and she and her young children are being followed by a strange man. Is someone trying to hurt them? Are there really ghosts in Wagtail?
Book two in the Paws & Claws Mystery series is just as delightful as book one! I could easily see myself vacationing in a pet lover's paradise like Sugar Maple Inn in Wagtail, VA! The colorful cast at the inn is back with a couple of new additions. Deputy Dave is run ragged in this perplexing mystery which will have you guessing until the end! Krista Davis has a strong writing voice; the plot's tight and fast-paced; and the mystery will keep you enthralled late into the night.
The author provided me with a copy of this book. I voluntarily posted an honest review.
A well-written book with a wonderful MC who passively solves the mystery rather than running around like an arrogant idiot interrogating and accusing random people. I can't tell you how much I prefer passive investigations when amateur sleuths are involved. Wagtail sounds like heaven too and the mystery itself was very well plotted.
It's Howloween in Wagtail and the Sugar Maple Inn is filled with guests including some ghost hunters who are hoping to investigate some local ghost legends. The real weirdness begins when Holly's pets Trixie and Twinkletoes find a body at the gazebo which belongs to one of the town's most notoriously haunted places. The body was killed strangely similar to one of their famous legends so the ghost hunters of course are eager to look into it but Holly wants to keep away any bad press before the murderer strikes again.
This book was probably one of the most fun Halloween themed books I've read. I could just picture all the fun decorations at the inn and around town. I loved how they had their own local legends and a ghost walk to keep tourists entertained. The story was so entertaining with many twists and turns so of course I didn't guess the killer till it was revealed. It's interesting to see how Holly's ex has come back to town and once he saw that there were ghost hunters, he actually wanted to join them and have some fun. Holly noticed how different he was especially since he came last minute and had to use the spare room in her apartment.
Mrs. Mewer was a fun little cat character that belonged to one of the guests. She did have an annoying habit of shredding newspaper and running loose in the inn if she got scared but she was still very sweet and got to know Trixie and Twinkletoes as her friends.
When you come to the very end of the book, the last full paragraph, you'll see how the titles plays in perfectly! I absolutely loved the ending, it brought closure for the memory of a couple of women and it was well, it was just awesome and you'll have to read it for yourself. I can't wait to continue this series! Oh and there were some really delicious sounding Halloween themed recipes in the book too. I really want to try some of them, there are even notes about what you should and shouldn't give your dog or you can leave out if giving to your dog. Happy Howloween!
Ghost hunters descend upon Holly's grandmother's inn in Wagtail. (Wagtail is a pet-friendly town relying on tourism.) When an unpopular woman dressed as a legendary local ghost drowns in two feet of water, Officer Dave and Holly suspect someone helped her. The author included some successful red herrings. The dogs and cats sense things before humans. It's a cute Halloween book. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jeanie Kanaley. The narrator sometimes read without emotion and often reminded me of a car's GPS which often mispronounces place names. However, Kanaley mispronounced commonplace words.
This is such a cute series. Of course, if you put a dog on the cover, I'm right there! But the mysteries are such fun and the character are very nicely fleshed out. This is a Halloween-themed mystery set in a resort that I would so love to visit.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery set at an Inn that caters to people with pets. That's a place I'd like to visit!! I thought the MC was good, and liked it when she attacked the person that was attacking her dog. Plus, there seems to be a little love triangle in the series and those are always fun to watch happen. Not sure I'll read another book in the series, but you never know what I might need to read for challenges!!
Book #107 Read in 2015 The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer by Krista Davis
This is the second installment in a cozy mystery series. Holly has moved to Wagtail, a very pet-friendly town, to help her grandmother at her inn. It is Halloween time and ghost hunters have come to town to film a special. They get a little more than they bargain for when a young woman turns up dead. Was it an accidental drowning or muder? Holly begins her own investigation to try to help her friend Dave, a local police officer. Aided by terrier Trixie (who reminds me on my Emma) and Twinkletoes, a calico cat, as well as a host of two-legged friends, this book is suspenseful enough to keep readers guessing until the end. Additionally, the book includes pet food recipes, from the author's knowledge with one of her own pets who suffered from bad food allergies. She began to cook food for her pets herself.
This is the second book in a delightful series. Wagtail is a town devoted to the love of animals- well mainly dogs and cats. This book starts out with the arrival of a team of Ghost Hunters who are part of a reality show. Holly Miller runs the Sugar Maple Inn and to say they are pet friendly is an understatement. Holly has a dog Trixie and a cat twinkletoes who have as much personality as any of the human characters. And the human characters are a great bunch of people . In this episode it is Halloween which makes it perfect timing for ghost hunters to come to town. And also a good time for a murder to take place. If you have read the first book Murder She Barked ( and you really should read it) you will be happy to see the return of characters and events. Also some new people are added. If you, like me, love pets as much as you do people- you must read this book.
It wasn't a bad story and I enjoyed all the cats and dogs, but there were way too many characters to keep track of. The author included a cast of characters the front of the book which I referred to multiple times.
Holly and her grandmother runs the Sugar Maple Inn in Wagtail, VA. The town has been converted into a vacation place for pets and their owners. The pets get fed dishes from a menu which is made animal friendly. This week the Apparition Apprehender Ghost Team have rented the Inn. Plus they are two other interesting guests. The Ghost Team will be filming a ghost TV series from the haunted Wagtail Springs Hotel and Holly’s Aunt Birdie Dupuy’s Home. They will be investigating local supernatural legends involving paranormal phenomenon and an old murder mystery. This is the week of Wagtail’s Howloween festivities. Pets dress up and trick or trick. The town has gone all out with creative, real like and scary decorations. The bars are serving drinks called Voodoo Witch’s Brew, Black Widow Martini, Once Bitten, Bewitched and Hocus Pocus. Then there is a murder. The woman killed was with the ghost hunters. She was dressed as the ghost of Becca Waite who is said to inhabit the Wagtail Springs Hotel. But something is not right...the Doc claims there was no foul play. He claims the woman tripped, bumped her head in several inches of water. Neither Holly or the investigating officer agree. So off Holly goes accompanied by her furry friends not only prove it was murder but to help solve the murder. Holly is also involved in helpful and protecting her friend, Clementine who with her children has returned to the family’s farm. Clementine has lost everything when her husband’s fraud investment scam was discovered. She is now being haunted by persons who think she has a cache of diamonds. She adds flavor to the story All the human characters are well defined, colorful, very interesting and dimensional. Yo will meet a variety of fur babies. There is Holly’s Twinkletoes (the Calico Cat), her dog, Trixie ( a Jack Russell, her grandmother‘s dog, Gingersnap ( a Golden Retriever). The guest’s fur babies include Casper (a Weimaraner dog) and Mrs Mewer ( a Siamese cat). Plenty of suspense, mystery, murder, suspects, ghosts plus drama mixed with humor and romance. Description for both the pets and their humans foods in the book were mouthwatering. There are recipes are included at the end of the book. Plus the setting is beautifully described.
I enjoyed this second book in the Paws and Claws series a bit more than the first, but that might be more due to my adjusted expectations than to any real difference in quality. With my vast experience of a single book in the cozy mystery genre, I have a good idea what to expect, and this book met expectations admirably. It’s a cute story, with uncomplicated characters, and not only does this book add on to the DOGGIES(!) from the first book, it has more KITTIES(!). Seriously, who cares why an unlikeable character drowns under mysterious conditions when there are doggies and kitties galore? The solution to the mystery is almost an aside, for me.
Audiobook, borrowed from my public library via Overdrive. Jeanie Kanaley’s narration is just as bad as it was in the first book. I had to laugh aloud every time the main character says or thinks “ugh” (which is lamentably often), because Ms. Kanaley actually pronounces the word, rather than verbalizing that guttural grunt of disgust that it represents. Yes, she actually says, “Ugg,” like she’s referring to trendy footwear.
And yes, I’ve already put the 3rd book in the series, Murder Most Howl, on hold at the library, because in spite of all the flaws, DOGGIES!
This was a wonderful second addition to a great series.
The characters were all well-rounded and realistic. The setting was also just as superb as it was in the last book.
The mystery was really well thought out with a lot of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting.
I do have two complaints with this book, however. First of all Secondly, the whole drama with Aunt Birdy really gets on my nerves, I felt like Birdy started to become a more 3D character towards the middle of the book, but by the end Holly and Oma are practically bashing her again. Granted, she's not the nicest of characters but I feel that Holly could be portrayed to at least be a little bit nicer to her.
However, overall a really good book. I'll be looking for the next one!
This is maybe the most fun Halloween themed book I've read! It's a fabulous follow up to the first in the series, and just as much fun. I found myself wishing it was late October and I was in Wagtail, Virginia, celebrating the holiday with the town. Murder aside, of course.
The mystery was fabulous, with layer upon layer as the truth is revealed. While I puzzled out pieces of it here and there, I was no where near seeing the full picture until it was spelled out, and I was right shocked by the ending.
All in all, this book, and series, are a pure pleasure to read!
If only Wagtail existed! The second book in the Paws & Claws mystery series finds ghost hunters aka Apparition Apprehenders to investigate possible paranormal activities. What better way to come to town during Halloween! Holly has her hands filled after finding a body and trying to help Dave convince people it was not an accidental drowning. The ghost hunters, townspeople and various guests keeps the whodunit going to the very end. Recipes in the back are for humans and pets.
This was the perfect book to read for spooky season because there is a lot of talk of ghosts and ghost hunting. I loved all the explanation of supernatural phenomena, both fabricated and the almost unexplainable. I also enjoyed seeing how Holly is settling into Wagtail and her new role at the inn. I was completely stumped by the murder and how many suspects there were, almost too many to keep track of. I enjoyed all the antics by the fury companions and the descriptions of the pet themed rooms. I am excited to catch up on this series.
This was a fun book to read around Halloween. This is the second book in the series and I am hooked. The characters are well written. They are diverse in age and personality which is what I love to see in a cast of cozy mystery characters. There is something for everyone in this series. I also really enjoy the animal cast of characters. They have as much personality as the human characters and lend a lot to the story. The book has a steady pace and a mystery that kept me guessing until the reveal. I am looking forward to catching up with the remaining books in the series.
Holly Miller is settling in fine at The Sugar Maple Inn in the picture perfect Wagtail Mountians. She is helping her "Oma" German for Grandmother out running the pet friendly hotel that not not only welcomes people but our four legged pets. There's a new reality TV show crew coming with dreams of developing a reality TV show called " Apparition Apprehenders" . They come just in time to help celebrate the "Howloween" festivities in Wagtail with activities revolving around Halloween.
The Apparition Apprehenders are a ghost team of several people that investigate paranormal phenomenon and Holly is working hard to make them feel welcome in Wagstail. The ghost hunters are investigating strange goings on at the Wagtail Springs Hotel. Holly is then shocked to discover along with her loyal and sweet companions her Jack Russell, Trixie and calico kitten, Twinkletoes A woman, Mallory who claims to have written a book with one of the ghost hunters floating in the shallow water of the Wagtails Springs Hotel gazebo.
The crime scene is reminiscent to a spooky legend in Wagtail of a past murder. Holly is one hundred percent certain that Mallory's death is no accident and she will go to hell or high water to catch a killer before another beloved resident of the cozy, pet loving Wagtail becomes another victim.
The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer converted me to a paranormal cozy mystery lover. I'm not a big fan of ghosts, goblins or spirits, I could identify with Holly being a non believer but I was at the ready with the ghost hunters to discover the ghostly hauntings at the hotel. .With the coziness and picturesque setting and Holly's constant companions of the four legged variety being a part of the story with Oma and all the characters made it feel like visiting old friends. Krista transports you into the world of her books and I am completely captivated. She makes her fictional towns spring to life that adds another cozy element and her charming characters that her books are never without.
A dark night with winds gusting the leaves about and chilled breeze as Holly Miller and Trixie head for the bonfire and the ghost tour. Holly had just arrived in Wagtail in time for the Howloween festival. The Apparition Apprehenders are in town to checked the various sighting of ghosts. Eva, a ghost debunked is present and she brought her Mrs Mewers. Twinkletoes and Mrs Mewers become friends. An unusual drowning occurs during the night and rumors began to circulate that Eva MURDER her. Holly and friends set out to clear Eva's name. This is the second book in the series and I recommend it.
Another excellent entry in this new series from Krista Davis. I want to move to Wagtail! Love the town, the inn, the people and the animals! A very good story, set during Wagtail's annual Howl-O-Ween celebration. Holly discovers a body in shallow water at the abandoned Wagtail Springs Hotel. What looks like an accident turns out to be murder, and looks like most, if not all, of the Apparition Apprehenders are suspects. Add in a guy who seems to be stalking an old friend of Holly's who's come back home after a nasty divorce and you've got a guaranteed to please tale. RECOMMEND!
★★★★✩ Loved it. I want to move to Wagtail. Or did I say that after the last book? Ms. Davis has a great way of describing characters - human or animal - so that it is very easy for me to picture them.
I really enjoyed this installment of the series. I like the series regulars and Wagtail is such a fun town and I love all the animals. I really liked the addition of the Apparition Apprehenders and enjoyed having them as guests. There was a lot more going on in this story than I ever imagined until it was all revealed. Looking forward to reading more. Another good pick for #readforkimberly
This second book in the series picks up a month later with Holly settling in to her new life in Wagtail with Trixie and Twinkletoes. The animals are glad to be back and make new friends with the inn guests- both 4 legged and 2 legged. It's almost Howloween and Wagtail is pulling out all the stops. A group of ghost hunters, the Apparition Apprehenders, have come to town to investigate the old hotel along with Eva, a university professor and professional paranormal skeptic 9and her cat, Mrs. Mewer). Also tagging along is Mallory, the girlfriend of Mark, one of the Apparition Apprehenders. Holly isn't the only one returning to her roots. Clementine Wiggins, Holly's childhood friend, has returned newly divorced with triplets in tow. Clementine seems nervous and upset about something but she won't confide in Holly except that she has a stalker. Holly and Trixie will try to help. On the eve of Howloween, Holly discovers a young woman, dressed as a local ghost, drowned in shallow water. Zelda was one of the last people to see the woman alive but Holly knows in her heart Zelda is not a murderer. That leaves one of the inn guests. Is one of them a murderer or was the death an accident like Doc insists? Officer Dave Quinlan is convinced it's murder and Holly does too. Holly is also trying to get to the bottom of the mystery of some so-called hauntings at the inn and around town. She refuses to believe there are actual ghosts but the evidence points to something supernatural going on.
This second book is much better than the first. The mystery is engaging from the start. I stayed up too late at night reading two nights in a row because I just couldn't put the book down. There's not just the murder mystery but the mystery of the ghosts. I was intrigued by the ghost hunting group and I especially liked Eva, being a skeptic myself. I keep an open mind about such things and I liked how the paranormal aspect was worked into the story to please skeptics and believers. (If you're a hard core believer skip the part where Eva shows Holly the flashlight trick). The murder mystery was a little complicated. I never guessed who did it or why. It kept me guessing to the end. There was also a mystery connected to Clementine Wiggins that was not as interesting. I knew right away the thing she would never sell. It was SO obvious. As always I loved the setting.
The animals are fully integrated into the town and the story. I'm not a cat person but I liked Mrs. Mewer and Twinkletoes together. They added some lightness to the plot. Trixie is her usual adorable self. She's my favorite character. The author really knows her terriers. She also get bonus points for knowing what breed Toto is. I just loved the fact Wagtail has trick or treating for animals.
The human characters are not quite as charming as the animals. I still really like Holly and her relationships with the men in her life. She doesn't turn into a lovesick idiot or throw herself at an unavailable man. She also doesn't settle. My second favorite human was Eva. She's logical and level headed. She uses science to explain the ghost hunting techniques. I didn't really like her relationship drama. It seemed at odds with her personality. The men didn't really stand out to me. I had a hard time remembering who each was. Of course sweet Felix was my favorite. I didn't really like any of the others. They were too eager to see ghosts and some were kind of jerks.
This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. It's a great read for cozy mystery lovers and animal lovers. I can't wait for the third book due in December.
