What is a Buddy Read?

This is an "Informal Buddy Read"
An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

Book synopsis
The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beaten the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop.

The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED. Now, twenty years after the Rising, bloggers Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives - the dark conspiracy behind the infected.

The truth will get out, even if it kills them

Haha, you beat me to this thread, Rachel.

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks of it. And of its sequels too.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I absolutely love this series! I just recently listened to the series again on audiobook and have started reading the novellas that are in the same world. I look forward to discussing this with others cuz it's awesome!

Becca Baldwin This is one of my favorites! Very excited for a re-read

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) I've never read this one. I'll have to think about it.

Dive in Stacie! What surprised me about the series is that it really isn't about zombies. It is much more about the role of media and human behaviour.

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments I have been wanting to read this one. I hope I can fit it in.

Erica | 352 comments I am in!

Sumit, you know it ;)

Perhaps it will gears to finally read the last book. :)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I will for sure follow this thread.

Hmmm. Then I may pick it up!

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments I love zombies I definately in for this.

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments My alarm on my phone just went off to remind me to start reading this. Have to finish up another book first, then I'll be back.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments Same here - finishing one up today and then will be starting this one this afternoon/evening!

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I have a paperback version for this book, and it's currently in hubby's car, once he comes back I'll get started :)

V_Nerdbooks | 5079 comments Me too, finishing mine and will start this one.

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I started this afternoon. Have to say it grabs you pretty quickly. Enjoying it so far. Looking forward to discussing.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments The lesson is, don't poke zombies with sticks. ;)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments I will make a note of it. :)

Cynthia (cynthiab) Ha Rachel. My initial feelings about Shaun weren't all that great. But I decided Georgia's a big girl and she didn't have to do something that dangerous.

I started it last night, and I've finished 'Book I' AKA the first 5 chapters. It's just the kind of zombie book that I like, focusing on the people and social structure v. a survivalist, paramilitary type perspective.

My thoughts: (view spoiler)

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Started this one now, This is my first zombie book. I can't believe I haven't read a zombie book yet. Lots more about bloggers than zombies so far though. And I keep expecting to see Vampires every time I read the name Buffy!

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments I'm about 15% into this book so far and just getting the lay if the land so far. I do hope to see more zombies though! ;)

(view spoiler)

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments Kristin wrote: "I only got to Chapter 3 last night. I started this book before and did not finish it. I can't remember why but I think it was because it was more blogging than zombies and I wanted a good zombie book."

Good to know - I'll have to reset my zombie expectations!

Cynthia (cynthiab) Zombie books are hit and miss, even with recommendations. What one person loves, another will hate. I have a zombie book collection, mostly because my daughter is always talking about prepping for the Zombie Apocalypse. (She's not been the same since she moved to Texas).

Anyway, I tend to like this kind of zombie book. If you like the interpersonal relationship oriented with some zombie fights book more than the soldiers and gore, I can recommend a couple of my faves.

The Reapers are the Angels (Reapers, #1) by Alden Bell Raising Stony Mayhall by Daryl Gregory World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan

I loved the book and the style totally caught my attention. It is a different type of zombie book. There are a few parts I don't like, (view spoiler)

Cynthia (cynthiab) Rachel, I was wondering (view spoiler)

I like George. It's Shaun that I don't like. I've never been a fan of the people that think they only risk themselves when they do dangerous things. Maybe in the book it's not quite as bad, but IRL the people that have to rescue them are at just as great a risk or more. I resent that, and I'm laying it on Shaun.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments Too bad I read this in August or September. I would love to get the BR points. :P

I need to read the third book.

V_Nerdbooks | 5079 comments Will start this hopefully later tonight, got about 5 hrs left of my other one to go lol.

I remember trying to read this last year, but I stopped as it didn't seem fast enough for me, hope it's better the 2nd time around !

Cynthia (cynthiab) RachelvlehcaR wrote: "Too bad I read this in August or September. I would love to get the BR points. :P

Rachel, are the rest of the books in the series as good as this one? I was very disappointed with the 2nd book in Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth series. The first was so good, and the next one was so bad I didn't make if halfway through.

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I liked the second one but it wasn't nearly as good. Sumit, hated it. We read them as a buddy read. That's why I am curious to see how people react to it. I think I made a review for it. I didn't like a few things about the second book but I liked parts in it too. The ending I was like oh great (not in a good way). I have been putting off the third book.

Sumit, what do you have to say about the books?

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I don't read many zombie books but I seem to be on a roll, I just finished The Girl with All the Gifts last night...so i should be ready to start tonight!

V_Nerdbooks | 5079 comments Was it good ST it's been on my TBR pile for ages.

Cynthia (cynthiab) Snowtulip wrote: "I don't read many zombie books but I seem to be on a roll, I just finished The Girl with All the Gifts last night...so i should be ready to start tonight!"

I sooo want to read that! I know my library has it. I may go pick it up today. It looks like something I would love.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments It was good, I wasn't sure when I started where it would go, it does have some of the same key components of other stories, but it also was different enough to keep me wondering where it was going.

I'm struggling a bit with both of them. They both seem a weeee bit too proud of their mission and how outside of the normal they are. And for some reason, I keep picturing Shaun as a 15 year old kid when I know he's older. I think its probably just the way he acts.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Stacey, I'm with you, at the moment everything in Shaun and Georgia's life is stagged, recorded, uploaded...I'm having a hard time to get a good feel for their true personalities. Shaun is always "on". I haven't gotten far enough along to tell if I'll love them yet :)

Just finished chapter 6

I agree with your spoiler. (view spoiler)

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments I'm not exactly sure where I am but it says I'm on Chapter 6 of 16 on my audio. (But each audio-chapter seems to contain multiple book chapters..) I remember hearing I'm on the "second book" not too long ago - so about a third of the way into it. Anyway...

Yes, totally agree with comments above about everything being so staged and having to look like they are the perfect family with the perfect parents. The parents seem to be more interested in their children's "success" - as defined by the parents... Not necessarily what the kids want to do with their lives or, heaven forbid, get to know them!

I can't get a good feel for Georgia & Shaun yet. They are both very focused on their blogs and the politics surrounding ~ and have provided a lot of good zombie info. Shaun is definitely a bit reckless.

As for the Senator, (view spoiler)

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments I just finished part 2.

Very political. I've never really followed politics, so find it a bit hard to care about the senator and the election stuff. He does sound very perfect, but maybe he just is a really nice guy. I kind of hope so, I've read lots of books lately where the nice guy turns out to be the bad guy, so it would be a change for him to remain the good guy.
(view spoiler)

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments @Renee - Same here as far as not being one to really follow politics too closely... It took me awhile to get into this book, I think, because of that and because it took awhile for the MCs to grow on me. I'm towards the end and things have definitely gotten more interesting and I'm enjoying more now.

I'm in book 3 - Chapter 24, if that helps!

V_Nerdbooks | 5079 comments I've started this morning, only listened to about half an hour I'm up to (view spoiler)

I feel like it's picking up a bit more now too, but I can't put my finger on what it is that seems more interesting. I'm not far behind you.

K~Terror (k-terror) | 5600 comments I guess I was on Book 4 bc now I'm just starting Book-5. Intense!
