The book (not Jumanji) would have been published before 2017, but I'm not sure how much before. It's about children who enter a game of some sort and have to find solutions to problems that arise. I am unsure if it is a novel or picture book, but it's aimed at about 9-year-olds. Many thanks for your help.

the man who wrote jumanji also wrote zathura which is a book sequel to jumanji except it's a different board game. could this be the one you are thinking of?

No more clues unfortunately. It's a long shot, I know. Everyone is so helpful though. It's not a video game. Could be The Big Joke. I'll have a closer look at that one.
