We need your input! Suggest tags for each state!
No, you cannot know what the super secret idea is and no, you cannot have more information than what is provided in this post!Nicole-I know you have no desire, right now, to be a Mom, but girl ya got what it takes-LOL
Will get back to you on those ideas
Joanne wrote: "Nicole-I know you have no desire, right now, to be a Mom, but girl ya got it takes-LOL"Hahaha! Just cutting off the inquiring questions as the pass. lol
Colorado - obvious but Mountains. Also Cannabis these days. Also skiing. Hiking. Hope that’s helpful. That’s my other home state.Massachusetts - could be LGBT, given Provincetown and the champions of that movement. Also could be colonial or Salem Witch Trials. Boston Tea Party or American Revolution. Paul Revere. Also Cape Cod. Also Irish Immigrants and old Boston cops.
Amy wrote: "Colorado - obvious but Mountains. Also Cannabis these days. Also skiing. Hiking. Hope that’s helpful. That’s my other home state.Massachusetts - could be LGBT, given Provincetown and the champion..."
Amy, each person gets one suggestion per state, so please narrow down what you would actually like your suggestion to be.
Also, it would be helpful, though not required, that you ensure your suggested tag is actually used here on GR. If it is not actually used here on GR, then the admins will not consider it.
I amended the instructions above to make that clear, since it was not explicit in my original post!
Delaware- "first" because it's the first stateHawaii- "island" because it is made up of them
Maine- "horror" because of Steven King
New Jersey- "immigration" because of Ellis Island (my home state!)
Pennsylvania- "history" because of all the US history there
South Dakota- "biography" because of Mt. Rushmore
Texas- "big" because everything is bigger in Texas
Virginia- "America" since the most US Presidents were born there
Wyoming- "wilderness" because it has so much of it
For New York I suggest using a tag of women's suffrage or women's rights. I live near Rochester, NY the home of Susan B Anthony. And about an hour away is Seneca Falls, location of the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women's rights convention in 1848 and currently the home of the National Women's Hall of Fame.Is that the kind of thing you want?
Mods-You have given me something to do as I am not moving to well these days...thank you. I will wait until I have researched every state (yes, that's how bored I am) to submit my list with links.

Great list!
Nicole R wrote: "Amy, each person gets one suggestion per state, so please narrow down what you would actually like your suggestion to be. "So I want to be clear that I am understanding this correctly. Can I make 50 suggestions, one per state?
You also do not have to make them all at once either. If you think of 5 states you have good suggestions for now, you can make those now then add other states later. That is totally fine!
Nicole R wrote: "Yes, you can make a suggestion for each of the 50 states but only 1 suggestion per state."Gotcha! I love this kind of thing! If only I had all the time to waste in the world.
Curses upon you! I made my decision about my tag vote for December after spending a morning looking at lists and clicking on titles. I have a brand new just-had-a-birthday copy of The Starless Sea begging me to keep reading and I haven't finished my book for this month's tag, or started one for Horizons.
But all I want do is research the best tags for each of the fifty states.
Oooo, happy belated birthday and what a great gift!! Maybe read a chapter, research a state. Read a chapter, research a state. Lol
Mamma Nicole 😂 Of all the things I have been called in life, maternal/motherly is not one of them! Lol
Here ya go A-D, plus my home State of MichiganAL- https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... The first moon rocket was built in Alabama
AK - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... The Alaskan Gold Rush came to mind
AZ-https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... Arizona is home to 16+ Natural Wonders
AR-https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... The state contains six national park sites, two-and-a half million acres of national forests, seven national scenic byways,

IA: Farming/family

WA: Nature
These are kind of predictable, I guess, but there should be some great books!
Ok. These are the 5 states where I have lived since my birth. (Although not in this order.) I've lived in California since I was a teenager, but sometimes I still think of myself as a Jersey girl. California- Earthquakes
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Connecticut - Gun control

Missouri- Mark Twain https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
NJ- Revolutionary War (childhood memories of 'Washington slept here')
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Texas- Kennedy assassination
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Drawing a total blank right now but totally intrigued to see what you all come up with & what the secret idea turns out to be!
For Massachusetts I suggest College https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...This is in part because Boston has the densest square mile of post-secondary schools in the world. I spend time in that square mile every week and my son attends one of them (Boston Conservatory at Berklee - yes the famous Berklee)--sometimes different colleges have buildings interspersed with eath other. Plus there are other colleges in the city--in fact it is a big college town! Also, right across the river from Boston you have Cambridge which houses the word famous Harvard and MIT schools among others.
I'll have to come back for other states--I've lived in four of them and visited a number of others even though I'm a dual citzen.
This looks like fun. And whatever the super secret project will be sounds like it'll be fun too! Here's a tag for each of the states I've lived in:
Arizona AZ (my current state) - "Desert" https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Colorado CO - "Snow" https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Michigan MI (my home state) - "Cars" https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
New Jersey NJ - "Beach" https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... (I only lived there a short time and spent every possible weekend at the shore!)
I suggest “water” for my home state of Minnesota. Yes, there’s over 10,000 lakes here, but we also do a lot for natural wetland preservation. And yes, that’s 100% the reason for our exorbitant mosquito population! ;)
Nicole R wrote: "Mamma Nicole 😂 Of all the things I have been called in life, maternal/motherly is not one of them! Lol"Ok, that actually made me laugh out loud - around the bite of toast I was taking at the time!
This sounds like it should be fun...Here are my suggestions for the four states I have lived in:
Oregon: Oregon Trail https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Texas: Music, because of the great music scene there (Austin, Willie Nelson, etc.) https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Colorado: Cowboys (did you know the worlds first rodeo was held in Colorado?)https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Michigan: Great Lakes https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Can't wait to see what you are doing with this!
I'm going to be spending Christmas in Orlando Florida. I know there are many amazing things associated with the state of Florida, but I am going to be an opportunist and select a favourite writing genre of mine, in honour of what made Disneyland famous: #Traditional Fairy Story Retellings
Linda C wrote: "For New York I suggest using a tag of women's suffrage or women's rights. I live near Rochester, NY the home of Susan B Anthony. And about an hour away is Seneca Falls, location of the Seneca Falls..."Hi Linda, I'm in WNY and I was thinking of something about suffrage or feminism too! Especially because the 100 year anniversary is 2020. I have some lists of suffrage related books. I use women's rights as a tag, but I think more people use womens-history" or feminism. Suffrage might be too narrow as a tag. I associate NY with feminism in general too (NYC, Ms Magazine, etc.).
Nicole - for now, can we use this thread to brainstorm ideas before nominating just one choice per state? One person might have an idea, but later find a better tag to express it.
Nicole wrote: "I suggest “water” for my home state of Minnesota. Yes, there’s over 10,000 lakes here, but we also do a lot for natural wetland preservation. And yes, that’s 100% the reason for our exorbitant mo..."
I was born there, and I was thinking "lakes" or "fishing" or "cold"
I see a lot of people suggesting tags for states they have lived in, which is great! So much insight! I just want to reiterate that you are not limited to suggesting tags for only states you lived in. If that is all you want to suggest then that is totally cool, but just wanted to reiterate that point.
Nancy, I guess you can brainstorm, but we really expected people to suggest tags they personally thought were appropriate. Which doesn’t necessarily require group brainstorming and discussion. It doesn’t hurt, but isn’t necessary. We want lots of suggestions of tags for each state, as opposed to lots of discussion that leads to everyone’s agreement on one tag per state. If that makes sense...
If you aren’t sure then you can totally sit back and observe for a while! We are soliciting suggestions for 3 weeks, so you have time to think about it if a suggestion doesn’t come to mind immediately.
Karin, college is a great suggestion for Massachusetts! It’s hard to narrow some of the choices for our state. But choosing between (tough) Salem Witch Trials and Revolutionary War, I believe I will go with Salem Witch Trials. For Colorado, how about Grand Canyon? Maybe that’s narrower than “Mountains” but it certainly is iconic. Sorry I overshot.
I think for New York, I would go with an obvious - one of the boroughs. Like Manhattan or Brooklyn. Let’s go with Manhattan. That’s a lot less depressing than 9/11.
I grew up in CT. I wonder what’s iconic about CT? Yale? WASP-y suburbia? Stew Leonard’s? CT is not that interesting to tell you the truth. Parts of it are gorgeous. We have a couple of tiny airports and Hartford is the insurance Capital of the world. I have a ton of in law family there and a heap full of memories. We have had some famous murders and school shootings. My husband also came up with Insurance, and he grew up there too. Maybe it’s famous for its lack of distinction and unremarkability? I will leave CT to you guys, the researching experts.
I love this idea and can't wait to learn what the mystery idea is. I'm going to spend some time doing some research and will be back later with suggestions.
Indiana - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... because there are surprisingly several true crime stories from my home state
Joanne wrote: "Nicole: FYI, I corrected that last link, on MI, so that it now works-sorry"No worries, I knew what you intended!
I grew up in NJ and I will suggest devil for the famous Jersey devil:https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
I currently live in MD and I will suggest Chesapeake because it is such a major feature of the state:
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Jemima wrote: "I am going to be an opportunist and select a favourite writing genre of mine, in honour of what made Disneyland famous: #Traditional Fairy Story Retellings..."Jemima, I couldn't find a shelf specifically named "traditional fairy story retellings". We need the name of an existing shelf on GR, so could you pick a shelf name close to what you'd like?
Joanne wrote: "Mods-You have given me something to do as I am not moving to well these days...thank you. I will wait until I have researched every state (yes, that's how bored I am) to submit my list with links."Joanne - even if you were moving like a young gazelle, I would expect no less from you! My first thought when I read this: can't wait to see what Joanne and her Teetering TBR Towers comes up with!
Amy wrote:For Colorado, how about Grand Canyon? Maybe that’s narrower than “Mountains” but it certainly is iconic. Sorry I overshot. "The Grand Canyon is in Arizona. I had to laugh because some years ago the post office mistakenly created a stamp calling Colorado the Grand Canyon State. So clearly a common misunderstanding.
I live here in AZ, but work for an East Coast company. All the time I get asked if I live in Colorado, or New Mexico, or Utah, or any random western square state. I always just laugh and say Yes - from the East Coast all these states seem the same. :)
I'll just add suggestions for the few states I've visited:Washington (current home) - environment - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Oregon - quirky - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
New York - immigrants - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Colorado - mountains (already suggested but I can't beat it!) - https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Karin wrote: "For Massachusetts I suggest College https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...This is in part because Boston has the densest square mile of post-secondary schools in the world. I spend time in ..."
I was thinking Education too for Mass.
Amy wrote: "Karin, college is a great suggestion for Massachusetts! It’s hard to narrow some of the choices for our state. Insurance fits too, but it's not an appealing tag.
I really want a revolution tag, but I'm not sure where it belongs. PA, NY, VA, DE?
Amy wrote: "Yes I and Cora are going with mountains. Better than Canabis - lol"LOL indeed Amy - I just checked out the cannabis shelf, and it's mostly non-fiction. But Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is on page 2.
Hard to believe, but there are 7 pages of books tagged cannabis! https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
And LOL even funnier is this book I found on page 6: Stoner with a boner

No, you cannot know what the super secret idea is and no, you cannot have more information than what is provided in this post!
What we need are tag suggestions that align with each state.
• You can suggest 1 potential tag for each state ranging from a single state to all 50 states.
• The tag does not need to be in the top 300 or anything like that, but it does have to be a tag that is used here on GR and has a shelf associated with it.
• If you nominate a tag for your home state or a state you lived, then definitely let us know!
• Feel free to let us know why you selected the tag that you did, but that is not required.
• If you can link to the shelf on PBT that would be much appreciated, but, again, is not a requirement. As a reminder, you can link to all shelves by including https:// www.goodreads.com/ shelf/ show/ NAME (take out those spaces!)
• There will be some participation points associated with this for the people that make the best suggestions as judged by the admins.
• You can nominate the same tag for a state that someone else has nominated.
We are looking for tags that really capture something unique or iconic about the state, but you can be creative as well! For example, I am from Missouri and I would consider suggesting a tag like, "pioneers" https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... because many trails west started in Missouri and Laura Ingalls Wilder eventually settled in Missouri.
Blanking on what all of the states are? See the list below. It would be wildly helpful if you would put your list in this order, but, again, not a requirement. You would just be taking pity on me. lol
Nominate away!!! We will accept nominations until noon EST on Tuesday, December 10th so you have plenty of time to think about it and let us know your thoughts!
