Question about Jenna's age

********SPOILERS********
I didn't have a problem with the Sixth Sense type ending...it's hard to find anything that isn't derivative of something else and I think Jodi Picoult told a good story. One issue that I have is about Jenna being 13 in the story--I thought that in the spirit world people stayed the same age as when they passed? Even though I'm glad I didn't guess the ending, I think I would have if Jenna hadn't aged after she was dead.

I see it like this: Serenity is the one who originally saw the ghost of Jenna. Despite this happened 10 years ago, I would think too she would have been age 3 instead of 13. Maybe Serenity saw a 13 year old Jenna, should she have lived that long because I think that can happen. I also want to reference Claudia in Anne Rice's novel, Interview with the Vampire. She's changed to a vampire as a little girl, but even though she ages mentally, she doesn't grow physically. Therefore for Jenna, I think she definitely is floating around and grew spiritually, if that makes any sense.

It would have been hard to tell the story from the viewpoint of a 3 year old. I think Jenna had to age in order to make it doable. Plus, if Jenna didn't realize she was the one who died, it could be that as an earth bound spirit who thinks she's alive, that she would continue to age? At least in her own mind? And then have shown herself to Serenity at that age.
We had this discussion in our book club about Jenna's age. I agree with Julie that Jenna needing to age so the story can be told with a 13 year old perspective rather than a three year old. We also thought the same as Julie, since she didn't realize she was dead her spirit had aged in the physical world.
I know Jenna died at age three. Serenity discovers her tooth and then her bones are discovered. So she was "killed" - how? How did she die? An accident with an elephant? I missed that part.
Emily Drummond
Jenna was killed by Nevvie out of revenge for her own daughter's suicide.
