SOLVED. YA: girl learns to hover her spirit above her body, and travel. early 1990s. [s]

The main character was a girl who learned, slowly, how to levitate her soul outside her body. She met another girl/soul who helped teach her how. Once above her body, she was able to "travel" while still lying in bed.

I read it sometime in the early 1990s, and it was set around that time period. English/USA. There was something with a Native American theme to it somehow.

To answer the previous question, I'd say it's definitely not horror or fantasy.
It fits in the young adult themes of self identity, and friendship/romance. And if there's an additional tone it might be that of thriller, in the sense that there were unexpected twists, and the protagonist had to use her own version of trickery to get her body back.
