Why's that Mary?

Solar by Ian McEwan 3.5★
Was a bit disappointed with this. I'm not very good at reading books with unlikeable characters.

I really enjoyed this sensitive novel about a family unravelling after a favourite daughter dies.

Good luck with your move Mary:) I hope you find some time to read your books, but don't stress about the challenge!

Good luck with the move Mary. Hope Bourke proves to be interesting for you!

I think Clive James is a much better poet than writer of prose. I love his recent translation of Dante's "Divine Comedy".

Ha, of course you read it! I was thinking as I was typing my reply "These are book people, they already know this" but I thought I had better say it anyway (just in case).
Believe it or not I don't really know anyone else who reads much, so I forget sometimes.

I didn't know about it, so thanks for posting the link Dana :-)

Ooooooh nooooooooo - thank you, I've just downloaded it, missed this one! Now I have to fit it in to my agenda. Still, This Shattered World is still being processed at library so will be a week or so before I get it. Then have it for a month - is do able ;)

I always have an agenda - keeping to it though is another story - I am a mood reader too and sometimes something comes along and the Agenda is put to one side while I read it ;)

Sorry, I didn't see that one.... I have Time Will Tell by Fiona McCallum which is #2 in series on my tbr but don't have the first book, do you think I should read #1 first?

I put the ratings up when you asked for them. The 3 books in the Button Jar series are like one big book. The story would make more sense if you read Saving Grace first.

This book grabbed my attention because it was described as a literary medical thriller but I didn't enjoy as much as I expected. It was literary but wasn't really a thriller or even much of a mystery, although the original premise of six people all dropping dead suddenly at exactly the same time sounded interesting!

I picked up Saving Grace on iBooks for free " first in a series"

Well spotted Veronica, its not there now :(

I then started my Australia Day read but it might have to be replaced with something else as I can't get into the headspace required for this type of book. So I have now started The Signature of All Things and can I just say only 8% in, I am really enjoying it.

Hi Lynxie. I felt the same way about Stardust as you did, the movie was great and like you I saw the movie before reading the book which was a let down. I just don't get Neil Gaiman I want to like him, I feel as if I should love his work but I just don't. You are right reading the book just makes me want to watch the movie:(

Glad I'm not alone in that Dana. I'll try others of his work and see how I go.
@Rita, Lynxie and Dana (and anyone else who feels the same!)
Don't stress about liking Neil Gaiman or not you guys! That's why everyone has different tastes...of course he's not for everyone, and just because he's very popular doesn't mean that EVERYONE loves him! The Ocean at the End of the Lane is being read ATM by my bookclub group and I have heard several of them say "I just can't get into this book"! I hadn't read a Gaiman until last year and found I really enjoyed it. But as I said, not everyone will enjoy him! So, be happy you're unique and that you will always love some and not others:)

So true Brenda. I have read one of his short stories - it's set in the nursery rhyme land called: The Case of the Four and Twenty Blackbirds. That one I enjoyed. :)

It's available free online. http://www.neilgaiman.com/p/Cool_Stuf...

I think it would be easy to like one of his books and not another because he writes in so many different styles. American Gods is so far from Stardust you would not think it the same author.
