I read Real Friends by Shannon Hale on a whim, because my daughter got the sequel as a Christmas gift. Now I'm re-reading it with the girls. It's a super cute graphic novel by a new to me author, about growing up and how friendships change. Great choice for fans of Raina Telegmeier

My original choice was The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan, which I'm still planning on trying to fit in as a double if I have time. I have at least three of her books on my shelf and I can't believe I haven't read her yet!

I love Zadie Smith too. Swing Time was great. On Beauty is my favorite by her (it was also my first). Definitely recommend that one.
