I read it or it was read to me probably in the 90s. It was a children's picture book with at least two little angels, one of which was afraid or shy. They talked about "Gabriel." (view spoiler)[in the end there may have been something about the "sky" falling down, and it turned out that they were in a play and "Gabriel" was the teacher/director. (hide spoiler)]

I remember good illustrations - probably realistic paintings, not cartoon-ish or renaissance-style.

The Shy Little Angel
