Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Folks, to satisfy A (Non-SFFBC) Challenge, I'm looking for a book with "a love triangele".

I'm hoping, instead of some bodice-ripper that is way off the main sequence of books I like, that someone has a good SF or fantasy suggestion that I can use for this.

The floor is open for your suggestions!

Meredith | 1777 comments I'll have to poke around on my read lists for other possibilities, but Red Mars has one.

Kaa | 1543 comments I saw in the other thread that you were interested in books on the group bookshelf - maybe The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms would count? (ETA: I don't think the protagonist is in a love triangle, but there is definitely a relationship I would describe as a love triangle in the mythology that forms a major part of the story.)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments A couple definite love triangles that come to mind from our group shelf:
The Once and Future King
Oryx and Crake

A couple I’m not sure of, so you should probably wait for a second opinion:
The Fifth Season? Or does it only count if (view spoiler)?
The Eye of the World? Not sure if that counts because that whole relationship situation was kind of a mess and I’m having trouble remembering just which relationships were formed in that first book as opposed to just being foreshadowed. There's surely enough characters in there to draw lines between them and make up a love triangle, though...

There are a handful of other books on our shelf that might qualify, but they’re either subtle or short-lived so probably not in the spirit of the challenge. Magician, Elysium, I think some others along those lines that I didn't write down at the time I thought of them because I didn't think they qualified.

There are probably others that I’m forgetting or haven’t read yet.

Edited to remove one that I was remembering wrong about.

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments There’s no evident love triangle in The Eye of the World.

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Now that I’m taking the time to look at Mike’s shelf, I see he’s read all the things I thought did or might fit anyway, so there isn't anything helpful in my list.

Guy Gavriel Kay’s Fionavar Tapestry trilogy has one, but I don’t think it showed up until the second book.

Sarah | 3168 comments Recently read Hugh Howey’s Half Way Home. I enjoyed it, and there is a definite love triangle.

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Semiosis does, kinda.
Here and Now and Then
China Mountain Zhang
Six of Crows
kinda Too Like the Lightning
Deathless
War for the Oaks

I think those would all qualify, even if it's not the main plot?

Argh sorry I thought your request was from our bookshelf. I can think of more that the club hasn't read though!

Sarah | 3168 comments A couple others im thinking of:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Limited Wish by Mark Lawrence (is a sequel)
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (though if I’m being honest, this isn’t something I’d recommend reading, but I’m also pretty grumpy lately)

Trike The Princess Bride comes to mind.

The Mercy Thompson books have this, as do the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) novels. I know the Mercy ones start off with that, the first being Moon Called.

I haven’t read the books, but the movie versions of the Hunger Games and Shadowhunters (Cassandra Clare) feature love triangles. And what’s that time travel show on Starz where the 1940s nurse goes back to 1700s Scotland and US?

Oh, and Twilight.

Of all those I’d go with Moon Called. Lots of decent action and light on the sex.

One non-SFF I liked was Bridget Jones's Diary.

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Geniuses all of you!

Yes, bonus points to Allison & Kaa & YouKneeK for striking first against the Read All The Books / club bookshelf. (I forgot to include that guideline when I moved to the new topic).

MVP to Allison with four choices I haven't read.
Trike gets Play-of-the-Game for four _series_ I have not yet read, but a scary bobble out there, mistaking Prince Humperdink's lust for power as 'love'. Sun get in your eyes?

But, wow, everyone, putting my lazy brain to shame! Thanks for all the good ideas!

Trike (view spoiler) That’s why I figured it met your non-steamy love triangle.

The Bloodbound has a triangle
the Sookie Stackhouse series starting with Dead Until Dark has a triange

Shoot, that's right, Guess it's also a "rotten choices triangle"!

I can deal with steamy, just wanted to get a side of non-romance to go with it!

CBRetriever | 6117 comments Dune at the end has a love triangle with Paul marrying the Emperor's daughter but keeping Chani on the side

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments Wound up choosing Deathless, BTW. Thanks, everyone!
