Dulce | 9 comments In the book humans live in space and no longer eat real food instead they have nutrition pills. These pills are made from people who actually eat food and it cuts their lifespan by many years. Also the kings life is extended by basically sacrificing people for him, somehow the other persons energy gets transferred to the king. In order to choose who will
be chose they hold trails, to see who is better physically and mentally fit. In the book it’s going to be the kings last transfer, when he dies one of his daughters will take over for him. To decide if one of the daughters should rule she’s placed in charge of choosing who’s the fittest to die because her dad thinks she’s to overrun by her emotions. However, her childhood crush joins the competition in order to try and save his sister (she can no longer eat the nutrition pills because the daughter had been giving her bits of real food, she was one of the people they made pills from) but in the end he ends up being the most fit, even though the girl tried to rig it so he would loose. So at the end when the power transfer is happening she decided to flip the switch on her father instead of the boy she loves. It’s revealed that’s what they wanted her to do because her father wouldn’t have survived another transfer anyways and she becomes the queen.
