I read Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee
Finished 1/4/15
Rating- 4 stars

Although she is a teenager herself, Penryn will do anything to protect her family- her mother suffers from mental illness and is unpredictable and paranoid and her little sister is paralyzed from the waist down, possibly by the hands of their mother. But when the angels attack mercilessly, it is up to Penryn to take charge and find shelter and safety for them all. During their search for safety they encounter a fight between angels. Penryn gets involved, helping 'one of them' from the onslaught, but not before his snowy white wings are severed from his body. in retaliation it seems, one of the attackers takes little Paige as he flees the scene. Feeling he the angel Raffe is the only chance she has at finding Paige again, she drags him and his wings to shelter and waits to see if he will live- hoping he returns the favor by helping her find her sister. This begins the unique bond of two mortal enemy races and the trip they set out on that could only result in catastrophe- how could a human and a wingless angel take on the hordes of powerful angels and save a crippled girl?

I really enjoyed this book- this is one I have held off from for a long while but downloaded it to my kindle a while back for a buddy read that didn't happen and decided it was time. Glad i did! I really liked the story, which was different than other post apocalyptic novels because it begins during the apocalypse. We see the destruction of civilization as we know it and how humans react to the breakdown of society and attack from beyond. Penryn, who has had to grow up and take charge at an early age due to her mother's illness- probably schizophrenia- so she was readier than most teens to fight for her family's survival. But still vulnerable and unsure. But tough! And her unlikely ally was likable though he was a part of the attack on our world- we don't know exactly why he is being attacked but we see some empathy in him from the beginning. He doesn't appear to be as cold and unfeeling as the others. Although Penryn is unwilling to fully trust Raffe she does enjoy having someone beside her who has her back, even if it is for a limited time.
The first book ends as the human resistance begins to retaliate on an angel 'camp' on earth. Penryn and Raffe have survived but are separated and all chaos has certainly begun. Great read!

Review: I love this series. The characters are really brought to life. one is made to feel a part of this small town. I like how the entire town gets behind the main characters when they are in trouble, and also how they egg them on in the romance department. it's a lot of amusement for all...kept me laughing and in tears.

number 1 in series

Review: this is a good cozy read. in the tradition of small town life...Father Tim is drawn back to his roots by a mysterious note...a lettre sent to him anonymously. his intent is to locate the sender and be gone in a day or 2, but once he arrives, his curiousity gets the better of him, and he returns to find old haunts, and runs in to several locals from his past with whom he reminisces about their shared memories. the story itself has many flashbacks in which we glipse his childhood, and we understand how he came to be the man he is now.

Review:Patrick MacRae loved putting people into boxes including his four daughters Rose, Violet, Lily, and Daisy. None of his daughters were happy with the labels or the boxes but didn't see any way out of them either. When Margaret is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia it forces the daughters to take long hard look at their relationships with both of their parents. It's hardest for oldest daughter Rose because she's anything but perfect despite what her boyfriend and business partner says about her. What will Rose learn about herself and her mother? Your answers await you in Imperfect Rose.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I listed as Minttu because I was hoping that the backup player would have been assigned by then. I realize that she not here any more I should have been more considerate of your feelings Catherine and I'm grateful that you read the book. Please forgive me for not listing you as the reader.

I do as well...and this series is good in that it is abou the town more than the characters...each book is primarily about 2 characters....with former ones playing a background role....which is nce..because you get something different each time :) normally I like to take a break between each book in a series because I start to get bored with the same characters....it doesn't mean I am not liking the series....just that I need a break

Review: I absolutely loved this story! it is a wonderful romance that takes it's time by making you feel a part of something quite a bit larger than life. Caitriona omes home (to her mother's roots) in a very small village in Scotland...and immediately everything goes wrong. however, she meets Graham Buchanan, famous flm star, and the chemistry begins. Her Grandmother creates more of a wall, by being crotchety, but in her own way she loves her grand-daughter. Romance definitely blooms, regardless of her denial. it is not a typical romance, where there is "love at first sight". love takes it's own sweet time.

I read World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2) by Susan Ee
Finished 1/11/15
Rating 4.5 stars

Review- This book picks up right from where book one ends. After being stung and paralyzed by the scorpion angels, everyone believes Penryn is dead, including her mother and the little sister she risked her life to save. Luckily they decided to take her 'dead' body with them as they left the burning aerie after the human Resistance bombing since once the toxin wore off she woke up. Not everyone was pleased to see her alive- mainly because they feared the angels had tampered wth her like they did little Paige- who now resembles a stitched up monster-like nightmare. A sweet little 7 year old girl with razor sharp teeth and a thirst for blood. Penryn must fight her inner fears as well as those in the community who want to put Paige down before she kills them all. This book continues to discover some of the angels are conducting experiments with humans- turning them into chimera like creatures (scorpion angels) who will become a part of their own army. It's all about angel politics though- Beliel (the archeangel who stole raffe's wings in book one) has created this army and a plan to become the new messenger to God. Raffe, with his demon wings, is determined to stop him- and get his wings back. When Paige escapes the resistance camp, Penryn and the leaders of the camp come up with a plan to destroy the angels' new plan for takeover- and hopefully save Paige again.

I liked this book even more than book one! I continue to love Penryn- who is a very strong young woman but vulnerable at the same time. She is loyal to her family and still finds herself strongly attracted to Raffe- who believes she is dead for quite a while in this book. When they meet up again their connection continues. I really enjoyed watching them explore their boundaries and get to know each other better- they really do have something! Overall a fantastic second installment of the trilogy- looking forward to the third and final book.

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 504 comments The Big, Not-So-Small, Curvy Girls Dating Agencywas a quick read. I flew through, enjoying the predictability for the most part. I liked that the author tried to get the personal thoughts of both the male and female main characters, seeing the same situation. I wasn't so thrilled with how insecure she made Becky. Becky was a take charge kind of woman, but hadn't yet learned to be comfortable with who she was.

It was definitely worth a read, but not if you're looking for more than light reading.

Completed: 1/13/15
Rating:****

Review:I liked this book. It was suspenseful even though the author hinted at who the culprit was throughout the entire book and it had a great twist at the end.

Alex is a PI who uses her excellent computer skills to her clients deliberately disappear. One of her clients is Melanie, who is trying to escape her abusive husband. Alex becomes worried when Melanie does not check in, so she starts to search for Melanie and trail Melanie's husband. Alex asks for help from Nathan, an Austin PD detective. Soon Nathan has a case that crosses with Alex and they go in search together for Melanie.

I liked this book enough to continue on with this series.

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 504 comments The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins was a great book. It kept my attention during the whole book. I am very glad that I saw the movie before reading the book, though, because I think I probably would not have liked the movie. The book is so much better and the movie left out many details. It all came together after reading the book, though.

There were many parts where I had to put the book down, even though I knew what was going to happen. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it, though.

I read Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
rating - 4 stars
finished- 1/20/15

Girl Interrupted is the memoir of Susanna Kaysen which takes place in the late 1960s when, at the age of 18 and after meeting with a psychiatrist for the first time, ends up allowing herself to be admitted to an exclusive psychiatric hospital, Maclean Hospital, where she stays for over a year and a half. During her memoir she categorizes her life inside the walls and the girls she meets. There is a mixture of horrific and hilarious experiences during her account. It is a critical look at mental illness versus sanity and the fine line that exists between the two- and how easily one can turn into the other. Susanna is very perceptive and honest about herself and those around her and does eventually leave the hospital to go on to live a 'productive' life, continuing her self critical assessment of her own sanity and behavior.
Very interesting read- especially when looking back to the sixties and how mental illness was viewed and treated.

Read: Longing for Love (The McCarthys of Gansett Island, #7) by Marie Force
Completed: 1/22/14
Rating:****

Review: I liked this book; I always enjoy reading a series where the characters are entwined. I thought this book had a bit too much about previous characters on the island.

Tiffany has recently separated from her husband and has the hots for Blaine, the town police chief, after an encounter while she was separating from her husband. To support her daughter, Tiffany opens a boutique, Naughty & Nice, an adult store that sells lingerie and "toys." The town is not very receptive of the store, so Tiffany has a unique way of advertising, which gets her in trouble with the local law. After Blaine and Tiffany's encounter, Blaine commanded Tiffany to call as soon as the divorce is final. Once the divorce is finalized, Tiffany and Blaine come together sexually and things get hot! In this book, you also read a lot about the previous characters.

I read Revolutionary Road...

Rate 4 stars

Review: while I did enjoy the story...I think it was ruined by the fact that I saw the film first. I hate that.. I struggled through though, because I did actually want to read it. I do actually love classics..but this one, by the nature of the story was rather dry, and I think is actully brought more life on the screen. it didn't help matters that I have been so exhuasted this week...so I found myself falling asleep....I think I will have to re-read it when I'm not so tired...

I did find that once I got further into the book...it does have substance, and the whilst the story doe plod along, it does eventually get to the point of living in a kind of utopian suburbia, that really is a bit reminiscent of "The Stepford Wives"...I kind of feel for April, Frank, Shep and Millie...all of whom seem to be deluded, and don't really have any idea (other than fantasy) how to get out of this trap.
