Valentina (vroveri) | 12 comments I'm looking for a REALLY good UF/PNR book. I'm usually disappointed about the stuff I find or just come out feeling very "meh" about it. I've read all the big series like Lords of the Underworld, BDB, etc and just can't find anything that compares to these series.

My only request is that the men be sexy alphas and the women not total stupid pain in the asses. I'm also fine with YA as long as its not childish and still has a lot of romance. Sorry for the big checklist, but I would really appreciate the recommendations!

Lanie (Lanies Book Thoughts) (lanieadamsk) | 93 comments I love, love, love, love G.A. Aikens entire Dragon Kin series. For me it was ten times better than BDB nonsense. Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken

message 3: by FantasyLiving (new)

FantasyLiving Have you read the Demonica and Lords of deliverance series?
Psy-changling series?
The Guild Hunter series?

message 4: by Kelleigh (new)

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) Must reads:

Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning - YUM
Poison Princess series by Kresley Cole
Night Huntres series by Jeanene Frost

:)

Estelle (E) (vivelafantasy) | 256 comments I second the Fever series (my fav); and the Guild Hunter

message 6: by Kelleigh (new)

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) Estelle - I am about 25% into the second book of the Guild Hunter series and it's only OK for me... does it improve after book 2? Maybe I'm just the odd ball out lol

I read one book from this series and I didn't particularly like it, probably bc the heroine wasn't very likable and the romance was almost nonexistent. Maybe it was just the one book?

Yes to the first, no to the other two. I just read the blurbs for the first books of the other two and they seem awesome. I'll give them a try! Thanks :)

I've had my eye on the Fever series for a while but am kinda hesitant to start it because it's a fairly long series.

I've also looked into Poison Princess but am worried that it's going to be a lot of annoying teen drama. Is it?

message 10: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 53 comments How do you feel about lighthearted PNR? If so, I really liked Semi-Charmed by Isabel Jordan Strong alpha male and a smart, feisty heroine (no TSTL moments!) It's an adult story (no teen drama) with no cliff-hanger (which I hate).

If you didnt like the first, you probably wont like the others. Hmm. Ill try to think of some others!

Dawn (dawnv) | 320 comments For UF I would recommend
Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews
October Day by Seanan McGuire
Rachel Morgan by Kim Harrison
Arcadia Bell by Jenn Bennett
Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Rosemary and Rue (October Daye #1) by Seanan McGuire Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison Kindling the Moon (Arcadia Bell, #1) by Jenn Bennett Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones

PNR
Vampires in America by D.B. Reynolds
Psy-Changeling by Nalini Singh (and guild hunter gets better IMO)
Argeneau by Lynsay Sands
Jane Jameson or Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper
Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost
Riley Jenson Guardian by Keri Arthur

Raphael (Vampires in America, #1) by D.B. Reynolds Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh A Quick Bite (Argeneau #1) by Lynsay Sands Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #1) by Molly Harper Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian #1) by Keri Arthur

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments There's Shelly Laurenston who is not UF, but definitely over the top, funny PNR with a variety of shifters and alpha females who take no crap from their alpha males. She has the Pack series (3 books) and the related Pride series (9 books?).

Pack Challenge (Magnus Pack, #1) by Shelly Laurenston The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston

message 14: by FantasyLiving (new)

FantasyLiving guild Hunter does get better, but it is darker than other series.

I second Mercy Thompson series, although some books are better than others in the series.

I enjoyed the Immortals after Dark series.

Midnight Breed series I enjoyed too (except the last one, which I found as the weakest of them).

message 15: by Kelleigh (new)

Kelleigh (goodreadscomsunshine2047) The fever series is not a long series - compared to some - and trust me, it will be your new favorite - you just MUST read it!

: )

I agree with Sandra, Shelly Laurenston's Pack series is great. I would have also recommended Laurann Dohner's Species books but I can see you've already read a lot of them.

You can try this one, Bound By Her Scent by Kara Swynn It's short but the heroine is definitely not "a stupid pain in the ass" - lol

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments I second the recommendations of Fever series, The Hollows, Mercy Thompson, October Daye, Cassandra Palmer, Charlie Davidson, and Night Huntress series. Although, to warn you: many of the above series are a 'slow burn' or not necessarily heavy on the romance, or it may not happen the first book or three... that kind of thing.

I'd also recommend:
Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews Redemption (Penton Legacy, #1) by Susannah Sandlin Blood Warrior (The Alexa Montgomery Saga, #1) by H.D. Gordon Shadow Game (GhostWalkers #1) by Christine Feehan Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong Beyond the Night (Envy Chronicles, #1) by Joss Ware Water (Akasha, #1) by Terra Harmony Bound by Blood (The Garner Witch #1) by P.A. Lupton Power of the Moon (Power of the Moon, #1) by Tina Carreiro Covet (Fallen Angels, #1) by J.R. Ward On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews Howling at the Moon (Tales of an Urban Werewolf, #1) by Karen MacInerney Night Myst (Indigo Court, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss #1) by Marjorie M. Liu The Keepers (Alchemy, #1) by Donna Augustine Awakening the Nightmare (Symmetria #1) by Lanie Malone Once Burned (Night Prince, #1) by Jeaniene Frost
Hide & Seek (Games of Zeus, #1) by Aimee Laine Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine Hyde (Hyde, #1) by Lauren Stewart The Glass Man (Lila Gray, #1) by Jocelyn Adams Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout A Demon Made Me Do It (Demonblood #1) by Penelope King Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1) by Melissa Marr Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane Prodigal Son (Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, #1) by Dean Koontz Darkness & Light (Holloway Pack, #1) by J.A. Belfield

Builds to romance (not in first book, takes a few, but there is some passing nookie), but oh-so-funny: Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne

message 21: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Anderson (goodreadscomsharon_anderson) | 40 comments Love Dean Koontzs' Frankenstein... and yes, The Iron Druid is a favorite of mine - not heavily romanced, but very good (and funny!) I totally agree :-)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 55 comments I'd recommend:

First book in this series is free and is very steamy.
Highland Shift (Highland Destiny, #1) by Laura Harner Highland Pull (Highland Destiny, #2) by Laura Harner Highland Push (Highland Destiny, 3) by Laura Harner Highland Destiny (Highland Destiny 4) by Laura Harner

The Psy-Changeling Series is awesome:
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh Visions of Heat (Psy-Changeling, #2) by Nalini Singh Caressed by Ice (Psy-Changeling, #3) by Nalini Singh Mine to Possess (Psy-Changeling, #4) by Nalini Singh Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling, #5) by Nalini Singh and more...

Spinoff of Mercy Thompson (by Patricia Briggs):
Alpha & Omega (Alpha & Omega, #0.5) by Patricia Briggs Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs

World of the Lupi is also very good:
Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks Mortal Danger (World of the Lupi, #2) by Eileen Wilks Blood Lines (World of the Lupi, #3) by Eileen Wilks Night Season (World of the Lupi, #4) by Eileen Wilks Mortal Sins (World of the Lupi, #5) by Eileen Wilks

Definitely fits the non-stupid females & sexy alpha males. Strong women, sexy males, great characters.

Raphael & Cyn. Power couple. She is so good for him.

message 26: by Chocolatesoup (new)

Chocolatesoup | 16 comments So many good recs! I also personally love Dragon Bound. Poison Princess definitely starts out teen angsty but as the plot progresses into the dystopian realm the characters grow too. Psy-Changeling is awesome too.

message 27: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Anderson (goodreadscomsharon_anderson) | 40 comments I like strong female leads - but I also like strong males. BDB has 2 books where the female lead is focal - can't remember which ones...one was about a warrior, the other about some priestess, I think. I could be wrong about the priestess...

Dragon Kin series has some very strong willed females to go along with the guys. Her other series (written as Shelly Laurenston) The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston also has strong female characters to match the guys, and both have that great humor.
