Philosophy book on notes

Hello,

I've read a book about philosophy two years ago (2017) and I can't remember what was it.
The author of this book explained various notes he took from philosophy class or something he had in his notebook.
These notes were either notes or quotes from other philosophers.

The author is a man and older than 60-70 (I remember him being old)

This is all I remember,
If anyone has any idea, i'd like to know

What nationality was the author, and where (country) was he taking class or writing in the notebook?

I've read it in english
I'm not sure about his nationality, might be american or canadian.
