Has anyone read this series? The TV show starts up this week.. anyone going to watch?

message 2: by Kay Kay (new)

Kay Kay (meowkitkatmeow) | 12 comments Yes, I have only read the first two though.
Have you noticed the similarity to Twilight?
P.S The Vampire Diaries was written in like the 1990's.
I might watch it, if it comes on my channel.

message 3: by Bria (new)

Bria Teragram (bria_teragram) | 5 comments I read the first two stories a few months back when it was available for free on the Harper Teen website. I'm interested in watching the TV show. If they put it on Hulu, I'll definitely be watching the first few episodes at least.

And yes, Twilight is eerily similar to The Vampire Diaries.

message 4: by Kay Kay (new)

Kay Kay (meowkitkatmeow) | 12 comments The Harper Teen Website?
Is it any good?
I mean for reading books online, and things like that?

This post is by Jennifer... I accidentally posted this thread twice and didn't want to leave out here input!

I read the series. It was pretty good.. I'm wondering how the series and the book are going to relate. So far, the main character has completely different colored hair and one of the other main characters isn't on the TV show. I am still pretty excited for the show! :-) The first book (there are 2 stories in one book) is probably the best. The last book, is a little bit of a let down and is kind of confusing.

The show will be on the CW on thursday this week (so tonight). The books were actually published a long time ago... it is just like Twilight!

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (javallone23) | 20 comments Ya I think Stephenie Meyer got some ideas from these stories.

What'd we think of the episode tonight?

message 8: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 30 comments I read them when they first came out and loved them. Didn't enjoy them so much on re-read this recently. Watching the premiere right now. :)

message 9: by Kay Kay (new)

Kay Kay (meowkitkatmeow) | 12 comments Some Idea's?
Sorry, I know that this has nothing to do with Vampire Diaries but... it has to do with Twilight Similarities.
Has any one read jane Eyre?
Have you noticed the similarities there?
There are thousands, for example... EDWARD Rochester and Mr. MASON? (I think that, that is how you spell Mason)

Around 1992 I think. From memory The Vampire Diaries was a trilogy written by the L. J. Smith I haven't read it but then there's a great deal of vampire material out there.Considering the concept of the fictional vampire has been out there since Sheridan Le Fanu wrote 'Carmilla' a Gothic novella by Joseph in 1872, which follows the attentions of a female vampire towards another young woman and predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by some 20 years it seems like that us authors will continue to recycle material at every opportunity.

message 11: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 30 comments I read the first 4 books back in the 90s and the 5th one that just came out. I loved them when I first read them but not so much when I just reread them. The 5th one was better. You can definitely see the difference in writing style almost 20 yrs later

message 12: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

Angie | 2687 comments Mod
I didn't know there was a 5th one! THANK YOU Debbie!

message 13: by Debbie (new)

Debbie | 30 comments No problem. It sounds like she has more books in the works. The 5th book leaves it open to future books.

message 14: by Bria (new)

Bria Teragram (bria_teragram) | 5 comments The Harper Teen website occassionally has some books to read for free. I think the first story, Vampire Diaries: The Awakening, might still be free to read on the site. They haven't had anything interesting to me on there since April though. There are usually 1-2 books available for free, but the catch is you have to read them while online. Just got to the "Browse Inside" section. I think all the books at least have a few pages, maybe chapters you can read before it stops you.

THANKYOU, so much!
I'll look into it :)

I just watched the first episode and thought they did a pretty good job. I think it will be a good season.

message 17: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 43 comments I haven't read any of the books but I checked out the first episode w/ my daughter. I thought it was pretty good. And, I'll even say that I think the acting was better on this show than the highly publicized (with higher budget??) True Blood series (which I also enjoy). I was pleasantly surprised.

message 18: by Cameron (new)

Cameron the series is good. cant wait to watch tonight...... not meaning to diss twilight because i like it but their special effects are way better. and the guys are hotttt. lol

Kay Kay (meowkitkatmeow) | 12 comments Is True Blood good?
What about the books?
Which one would you recommend; series or books?

True Blood is an entertaining show, a lot of nudity in the first season though, just so you know. I personally prefer books which are quick and engaging reads. From my experience, people who haven't read books enjoy the show more. So if you are planning to get to both show and books, you should start with the show IMO.

As for Vampire Diaries, the books were rather average. LJ Smith has other better works.

message 21: by Heather (last edited Sep 30, 2009 02:25PM) (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) I love LJ Smith but this is her weakest series. I read them all 10years ago and again with the reprint last year. I enjoyed it but it was nothing amazing. I was surprised to notice that Stephanie Meyer basically stole her entire plot from Smith however, I had forgotten many of the details of Vampire Diaries.
As for the 5th installment to the Vampire Diaries series, it was awful. I adore Smith and Damon was one of my favorite characters but Nightfall was filled with plot holes and inconsistancies. I would hold off on reading it to see if she correctst these errors in the sixth installment.
With all that said, I think the books are better than the show, but that is usually the case. They might as well be night and day.

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate | 45 comments I think the actor that played Damon would make a better Edward than Rob Pattinson. And I am looking forward to reading the books--the show has gotten me interested. And how do you know Stephenie Meyer had even heard of the Vampire Diaries before she wrote twilight? I read somewhere that there are basically only a few core plots, and everything else is just a combo of them. So in a way, everything has similarities. You can only be so origional.

message 23: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana (tatiana_g) Kate, when you read the first VD book, you will see that similarities are undeniable and hard to overlook

message 24: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

The TV series is kind of getting boring to me. The True Blood TV series is for adults... definitely not for YA.

message 25: by Jill (new)

Jill (jillber) | 20 comments Totally off-subject, I've never read the Vampire Diaries but I think I will as I'm interested in how it's like Twilight . . . (sorry, long introduction)
Ahem, what I was going to say was that I read an interview a long time ago where Stephenie Meyer said that she'd never even picked up a book about vampires before she wrote Twilight, so she probably didn't steal the idea from LJ Smith.

message 26: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 43 comments Kate wrote: "I think the actor that played Damon would make a better Edward than Rob Pattinson. And I am looking forward to reading the books--the show has gotten me interested. And how do you know Stephenie ..."

I was thinking Stefan would have been a better Edward. I thought the last episode was good... Nice little cliffhanger. If you've read the books, how much sex is there? Are they appropriate for a 13 y/o?

Off subject a bit but... Has anyone seen this Twilight parody, Nightlight A Parody? Sorry to all Twilight lovers but this sounds like fun!

message 27: by Jill (new)

Jill (jillber) | 20 comments Hey, I'm a Twilight lover and I think that Nightlight thing looks fun! If anyone has been able to get their hands on it, please share!

message 28: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 43 comments It comes out in Nov... I'm going to have to buy it!

message 29: by Jill (new)

Jill (jillber) | 20 comments Yay, November! You'll have to let us know what you thought of it!

Spoilers to come! Read if you are interested in the similarities between the two books.

Well for some similarities are Edward and Stephan both fall for a high school girl, both don't drink human blood, both Damon and Jacob are part of a love triangle plus (spoilers) both can shift into animals, Both girls (Spoiler alert) Bella and Elena become more than human, in both books vamps can go in the sun, can anyone think of any other?

Tatiana (tatiana_g) Natalee wrote: "Kate wrote: "I think the actor that played Damon would make a better Edward than Rob Pattinson. And I am looking forward to reading the books--the show has gotten me interested. And how do you kn..."

Natalee, I've read first 4 VD books. There is absolutely no s@x in them. Not sure about 5th book.

message 32: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 43 comments Awesome, thanks for the info. :-)

message 33: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

Angie | 2687 comments Mod
That book looks hilarious, Nightlight!

message 34: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) There is no s*x in the series at all. Bloodletting is the vampire's idea of s*x in this series and there is a lot of that going on, especially in the 5th book.

message 35: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) Similarities to to Twilight are as follows:
Angsty, brooding vampire moves to middle of nowhere and falls for typical girl.
Vampire refuses to be with girl cause he could hurt her.
Vampire gets over his silly angstiness and finally agrees to be with human girl, but now crazy issues keept them in constant drama.
There is a loyal best friend, in love with human girl and human girl continues to string human boy along for her own purposes.
Oh and all things supernatural are facinated by said human girl.
Seeing as VD was written over 10 years prior to Tiwlight, I'm pretty sure SM copied LJ.

message 36: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana (tatiana_g) And the nobel vampire is vegetarian and the "reveal" scenes are almost identical too.

message 37: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 43 comments Well my daughter started these on Sunday night and is already through the first 3. She loves them and dare I say, she even said they are better than Twilight! Hmmm... I don't know. I think maybe it's just been awhile since she read Twilight.

message 38: by Lia RaeAnn (new)

Lia RaeAnn (myhappyending) The series is better than Twilight! I love the t.v. show, too.

message 39: by Lia RaeAnn (new)

Lia RaeAnn (myhappyending) Thay are really good!!!!!!

message 40: by Kate (new)

Kate | 45 comments One question. In the last episode, when Stephen is upset, he said that Daman killed Zack, and killed Tanner, and turned Vicki. Who is Tanner?

message 41: by Lia RaeAnn (new)

Lia RaeAnn (myhappyending) I have no clue....I'm confused too

message 42: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) That guy from the tent in epi 2 wasn't it?

message 43: by Kate (new)

Kate | 45 comments It could be, but I didn't think he was a main character

message 44: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) Tanner is not a main character.

message 45: by Lia RaeAnn (new)

Lia RaeAnn (myhappyending) I didn't get to watch the 2nd eposode so.......

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Kate wrote: "One question. In the last episode, when Stephen is upset, he said that Daman killed Zack, and killed Tanner, and turned Vicki. Who is Tanner?"

Tanner was the football coach.

message 47: by Lia RaeAnn (new)

Lia RaeAnn (myhappyending) Oh.......in the books he was a teacher. I remeber now.

message 48: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) Oh yeah, Mr. Tanner, the history teacher. I'm getting a bit annoyed with the show mispronouncing everyone's name. Maybe its just me though. When I was reading, I pronounced Stefan as Stef-fon and Alaric as A-lair-ick but on the show they say Stef-fan and A-lar-ick.

message 49: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa | 30 comments Jill wrote: "Totally off-subject, I've never read the Vampire Diaries but I think I will as I'm interested in how it's like Twilight . . . (sorry, long introduction)

Twilight was the first ever 'vampire' book I read, but then read Vampire Diaries (and found it to be sooo much better) and couldn't believe how many times Twilight came to my mind while reading that book. After that, I've never believed that Meyer has never picked up a vampire book in her life.

And for the show....I LOVE it! I think Ian Somerhalder was the PERFECT choice for Damon. He's got that character to a 'T', IMO. And Paul Wesley was an excellent pick for Stefan too. Just comparing the book with Stefan on it side by side with the actor that plays Stefan, they look eerily alike, it's great!

message 50: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa | 30 comments And why has Tyler disappeared from the episodes all of a sudden? Odd.
