Hello everyone, I hope you had a nice September and that October will treat you even better!

What are you reading/planning to read this month?

To aid those looking for spooky and terrifying reads, Horror Week has started on Goodreads and with it came the Nightmare generator ! Is it childish of me to love those little features? :p

So, my worst nightmare is (apparently) an incompetent puppeteer right behind me! (Phew, at least it's an incompetent one :p)

Currently reading A Natural History of Dragons and City of Bones in ebook, and Sew You Want to be a Hero in audio.

message 3: by Robin (new)

Robin | 32 comments Almost finished with Fool's Quest and will move on to Assassin's Fate. I can't believe I'm almost at the end! I can't wait to see how Hobb wraps everything up.

So, I'm going to finish Valor, then I'm on to A Natural History of Dragons, Watership Down (can't believe I've never read this one), Magic Bites and finally Ruin. Maybe not in that order.

Never? Wow.

Don’t delay Ruin too long as you’ll have those teething type problems.

City of Bones was a group read somewhere years ago. I’d finished the book before someone suggested zooming in on the cover. So pretty.

I'll probable do Ruin after The History of Dragons. I just found out that Wrath is not out on Audio in the USA. What a bummer. : (

I did the nightmare generator and mine was a mopey cannibal in the nursery. Now that's kind of creepy.

Oh no! How irritating. The audio is so good too.

I’m joining in on a reread of The Lonesome October book, I can’t resist.

message 9: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished Planetfall. I don't know what to think of it tbh. I mostly liked it, but it was tough to read in parts.

And I've started My Best Friend's Exorcism. Really enjoying it so far.

message 10: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Sorcery in Shad and started Lin Carter's Simrana Cycle, a collection of very Dunsanian short stories by, yes, Lin Carter and various others (including, at the end, a whole passel of stories by Lord Dunsany himself, which may or may not have proven to be a mistake; but I'll say that Carter's Dunsanian pastiche is surprisingly effective).

message 11: by Bran (new)

Bran | 98 comments I started my spooky October read early and finished 'Salem's Lot, hadn't read it before, I love a good vampire story. Started A Natural History of Dragons, only about 30 pages in but liking it so far. I may also start Senlin Ascends, got a copy a while back and am trying to read all the books I've acquired instead of buying more and more :D.

message 12: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished The Murders of Molly Southbourne. It was fantastic and twisted, so I jumped right into the sequel: The Survival of Molly Southbourne.

I've change my mind for October. I've decided to do some spooky journeys with Magic Bites, City of Ghosts, Camp Red Moon and finally Halfway to the Grave. Then I'll do Ruin.

Finished my 3 reads pretty much at the same time!

- City of Bones (mix of ebook & audio) was AMAZING! The world-building was inventive and well done. I seriously need to read more Martha Wells.
- A Natural History of Dragons (ebook) started strong but the latter parts were a bit disappointing. Still going to continue with the series though.
- Sew You Want to be a Hero (audio) was just great. Tim Gerard Reynolds' narration is on point (as usual). The series is probably the most adorable one I've ever read, with surprisingly dark moments.

Next up: Fire & Heist (ebook), Spaceside (audio) and a slow re-read of The Shadow of What Was Lost (mix of ebook & audio)

I'm in the middle of so many!
The Republic of Thieves (audio) again this has taken a back seat as a library trilogy came in!

The Tiger and the Wolf (audio) really hard to get into initially but it's caught me now.

The Harp of Kings I quite like this but it's difficult to say why. It's quite a gentle read compared to most of mine.

message 16: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Lin Carter's Simrana Cycle and moved onto another Lin Carter -- Tower of the Medusa. Which is a 2011 reprint of a novella that formed half of an Ace Double and which has some really dire photoshopped cover art:

Tower of the Medusa by Lin Carter

but I was greatly amused when I actually recognized the spaceship as an AMT Star Trek model kit I owned back when I was young.

description

It was cool because the model actually glowed in the dark!

(And my understanding is that it was an entirely unrelated generic spaceship model that AMT repurposed into their Star Trek line.)

message 17: by Tnkw01 (new)

Tnkw01 | 2293 comments Mod
I remember that model. Do you still have it?

message 18: by Joseph (last edited Oct 09, 2019 09:11AM) (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Sadly, no -- long since lost to the ages.

I also had the K-7 space station (from Trouble with the Tribbles) and the Enterprise bridge set (which I had the worst time trying to assemble) and the Galileo 7 shuttle.

Oh, and I just finished Tower of the Medusa and started another by Lin Carter, one of his sword & sorcery novels, The Black Star. (Which, at least in the original 1973 paperback, has a much nicer cover.)

I've always liked that Frazetta cover, but his work on the Lancer editions of Conan are one of the things that spurred my early, constant reading. My father bought Conan the Warrior & Conan the Usurper. I'd never seen such fascinating pictures even on the pulps he regularly got. Mom didn't think they were appropriate reading for someone my age, but that just added to their allure. I dove into them even though I didn't read well enough to really understand them. I understood enough & I'm still fascinated by REH's writing.

Lin Carter. I remember reading his Flashing Swords series of short stories by he and many of the days fantasy authors. I was really young and can't remember a thing about them but I do remember they were good. I may have to dwell back into to them one day.

That's a shame. I remember all those models. There was a Emory 5 & 10 and I would spend time looking at all the great models and try and decide which ones I wanted. That was soooo many years ago.

Yeah, Flashing Swords had some good stuff in it, including an early story by C.J. Cherryh, of all people.

So I finished A Natural History of Dragons. It was good. 3.5 stars. Now I'm starting my spooky journeys with Camp Red Moon.

message 24: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished The Survival of Molly Southbourne. Good, but not as good as the first. I hope there will be more books in this series because there are questions left unresolved.

And I started The Saturday Night Ghost Club. I seem to be on a trend here with horror/paranormal stories set in the 80s. This will probably be the last one though because I think I'm ready to move on.

Finished Camp Red Moon. It was actually really good. A perfect Halloween story. Now on to City of Ghosts.

message 26: by Joseph (new)

Finished Camp Red Moon and City of Ghosts. Both were good choices for my spooky journey for the Halloween season. I especially liked City of Ghosts. It was a really great YA story. Started Magic Bites. It is very much like a Harry Dresden type of story and I really like Harry Dresden. I believe I'm going to like this book.

message 29: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments I have just reread all three of The Broken Lands by TA White and am now reading the latest The Winds Call. I love all of TA White’s books but this one isn’t grabbing me as much as I had expected. The main characters were bit parts in the previous trilogy but aren’t really interesting enough to hold a story on their own.

message 30: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Hellbound Heart and decided that hadn't quite slaked my October horror thirst, so started The Damnation Game, Clive Barker's first novel.

I had to do one more before we leave the Halloween season. This is a short story by Neil Gaiman, October in the Chair.

Finished October in the Chair. It was great.

message 33: by Palash (new)

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments Started reading The Great Gatsby. It's been in my must-read list for like forever. Finally got around to start it. Before this, I finished Brave New World. Great concept. I gave it 5 stars(my first 5 star in 2019).

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished The Saturday Night Ghost Club. It was all right. Not exactly what I was expecting, but the ending came together in a very interesting and unexpected way that was touching.

Now starting The Bloodprint. I received it from a GR giveaway. I saw there's mixed reviews, but we'll see how it goes.

I finished Ruin and I'm really p!$$€d that Wrath is not available on audio in the USA. Ruin was great. 5 stars all the way. But I didn't care about the big reveal toward the end. Anyway, I may wait a little bit and see if Wrath comes out later.

An update on this. Wrath is available in the USA in......Italian. While there is nothing wrong with it being in Italian. What's wrong is it's not in English, the most spoken language, Spanish, the second most spoken language, French, the third most spoken language, or even German, the fourth most spoken language. There is something very seriously wrong with that. Sorry for the rant but I really needed to get this off my chest. I'll get off my soap box now.

I found out that the Wrath audiobook is available in the USA, in Italian. Being in Italian is not a bad thing. What is bad is that it is not available in English, Spanish nor Chinese. The top three spoken languages in the USA. It's also not available in French, Tagalog, Vietnamese, nor German , the next four most spoken languages. I just don't understand. Sorry, I feel better now.

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments hmm. It looks like its audiobook is available in english here in india on amazon. Maybe try downloading it using this link. See if it works.

https://www.amazon.in/Wrath-Faithful-...
(amazon.in instead of amazon.com)

I've tried that before with Amazon in England and Australia and it doesn't work. Apparently, they see your IP address and it automatically goes to the USA. I thought about setting up fake accounts with a VPN but I've read that people that get caught trying to scam the system have their accounts shut off....forever.

Well that stinks. I’d email the publisher. Also Gwynn is very approachable - at least on Instagram.
