SOLVED. Horse based story. [s]

I read a book as a child about a boy and his horse (but not that book from Narnia).

The boy had a horse that was to be a gift for a king I believe. The boy and the horse arrived with several others but were underfed on the boat trip so when they arrived they were rejected. Left alone in a strange land, they fended for themselves.

Some specific scenes I remember:
- the boy/young man being upset at how the queen forced a horses head up so high, the horse would bleed from the bit
- they became a horse and carriage for a bit
