Apparently there's a series of books called 'The Inheritance Cycle' that starts with Eragon. There's a priest who has no limbs and then has his/her tongue cut out as part of a self-mutilation ritual. I haven't read it, so can't confirm what that's all about! I found it through an internet search. It's too new though (2003+) and not an attempt at suicide so I doubt it's right.
