Figures. Just got the library email that book 3 is ready for me to pick up. Book 2 still says "waiting for copy".

I hope nobody read my previous comment, with a spoiler that discussed Book 2 through Chapter 8. Because I was reading book 3 and though it was book 2.

I didn't get much reading done on book 2 at the doctor's office. First office I've been to where you barely have time to sit down and get your book out before they're calling your name.I'll try to catch up to you, Becky!

Finally finished chapter 10 (view spoiler)As interesting as the mystery is, I'm not enjoying this one as much as I did the first one. I'm finding it difficult at times to tell who is speaking. I hope this isn't Johnson's style in every book. It makes it more difficult to put it down and pick it back up later without having to read back to figure out who's yapping with whom.
Just got book 2. Probably won't start until after the weekend, though. No days off for a while.
@Cynthia...I miss Henry being right there in the middle of things. The first book was just off the charts fantastic IMHO. There were a few times that I wasn't sure who was saying what and had to backtrack. A simple "so-and-so said" would've been nice. Regardless, I enjoyed this one and didn't see the ending coming. Loved the last scene of the book, too. It was a solid four stars for me. I peeked at Book three and it started off fun. I like the idea of Henry and Walt on a road trip, but I have to put it aside and read a few others. It'll be at least a week or two before I can get to it. That'll give others time to catch up, too.
@ Becky, I picked up book 3 in error, so I read 8 chapters of it already. It's better than this one IMHO. Not because the mystery itself is better, but it reads easier for me.I've had to set it aside for a couple of days until I get caught up on some other books, but I'll read book 3 this week.

I think I got to Chapter 3 before I had to switch to another book. It wasn't the best place, either. I didn't want to put it away! I'll squeeze a chapter in here and there between books though and see how it goes.
I am still on book one. I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like this book! I think I will enjoy this series. Are they still being written?

Book 3
I'm in the middle of Chapter 8 and love it. It's both funny and poignant and interesting. Also, I'm glad we've got Henry back.
I had a little trouble in the first book with Henry's dialogue, finding it a bit stilted. He's still the same Henry, and still isn't using contractions, but somehow I've come to love him and his dialogue flows just fine.

OK Folks, I started book 2 Death Without Company. So far I'm enjoying it but I JUST started, I'm in chapter 1. It was $10 to read on my Kindle - I won't usually pay that much for fiction so it had better be good! :-)
Wow. I had no idea the ebook was so expensive! My library has the whole series, which is a good thing for me. I do wish they had them in ebook form, but beggars can't be choosers!
@Cynthia, I've become spoiled reading fiction on my kindle because it has a back light so I can lay in bed and read while my hubby sleeps w/out disturbing him, or read in the car. But normally I won't pay more than $6 for a book. They have programs where you can borrow them and now Amazon has a program where you pay $10 a month and read all you want - but the books I want are almost never on those programs...Sorry, that wasn't really about the Longmire series - other than that the #2 book in the series is $10 for Kindle...!
I really prefer Kindle too. I have 6 different editions of book 2 on hold for like 2 week snow and still no copy available at the library.

Book 3 is four months after book 2 and other than the mention of a new deputy over the phone, there's nothing about the plot or outcome to ruin it for you. You wouldn't be lost either.
I couldn't help myself and finished Kindness Goes Unpunished at like 5:30 this morning. Sheesh am I tired, but it was really good. It was right up there with the first book!

Thank goodness my library has them for download or I'd be waiting on a used paperback to come snail mail. I enjoy dead tree books, but I'm spoiled with my Nook. Now that DH is back on dayshift, I count on my Nook to read late.
I'm totally Kindle spoiled, too...but I'm also a cheapskate! I never read dtbs in the bed, strictly my Kindle or ipad.

I really prefer reading on my Kindle at this point too.
I'm still on book 1, just started chapter 4. I really want to discuss this properly but work is killing me! I will say, I just loved the bit about the shower curtain burrito! Been there, done that. I had a shower like that when I lived in England for a few years -- was one of those square showers with just enough room for a body and maybe some shampoo and soap. It had a full-length shower curtain folded in half hanging in the doorway. It drove me nuts, always sticking to me! I couldn't stand showering there. It stressed me out, lol. So, I definitely related to Walt when it came to that! Cracked me up, too, thinking back on my experience. I loved how random and I guess ordinary that experience was for the character and how the author included it. Little nuances like that are what make me really like this book/author.Loving the characters and the characterizations and descriptions, personalities, you name it. I could smell and hear the sausage and peppers sizzling in the skillet during the making of the casserole scene in chapter 3.

I remember that scene. I love scenes like that. I am not usually one for description - I like dialog and I like the story to move along. But there is something I just love about "cozy" scenes with family or friends in a home, just milling about doing domestic things. They don't say anything like 'oh you are my treasured friend" but you can feel how connected they are by how comfortable they are and really how they can just take each other's presence for granted.

NEWSFLASH fellow readers! For those of you who enjoyed the TV series - My husband (who is head of entertainment in our household) just informed me that there is a good chance Netflix is going to pick up the Longmire series!Apparently it was the most viewed series ever by A&E, but they dropped it because the demographics skewed older. Advertisers want a young audience. (Which I don't understand, don't older people have more money to spend?)
Regardless, I hope it comes back! Though the differences between the TV and Book characters does affect my reading some.
I hope Netflix picks it up. I haven't been watching much television lately, but I would watch this one. Maybe get the husband interested.I'm not surprised A&E dropped it. It seems most of the programs now are those reality tv shows. I especially hate the ones set in the south. There's so much to love here, but they choose to depict satires of us. I hate to think people believe it's representative.

I didn't understand that thing with the advertisers either. Middle age folks have money, too. We're just less apt to buy into the latest greatest "thing" on the market. Although, I really want one of those Dodge trucks they advertised. It would pull my horse trailer nicely.
They go for the younger audience because they are more likely to buy the latest gadget, go to a restaurant or whatever due to advertising. Where us older people (I'm only 44 but I'm old to advertisers) have most likely learned our lessons already on spending. We're more likely getting to the point where we are ready to downsize our stuff and stay home.
That's true, Mary. We are the same age group and I don't pay attention to any of the advertisements. Maybe the commercials should be for books--that would get us to spend money!Glad to hear it might get picked up by Netflix, though.

I'm 46 (wow...already?) and we are settling down a lot, too. I want to do more traveling with my horses, but work schedules are still a factor, so it's limited to the summer vacations. We're home during the winter regardless. Riding in the snow isn't as romantic as it looks when the wind chill is 12F.

It did seem odd that he grieved so much for his dead wife and then later says that they never had a deep love for each other and that he stayed for his daughter. After that I kind of thought maybe he was grieving for what could have been. For the years they wasted settling for less. When I got divorced I didn't grieve because I missed my ex. I grieved for all the years I wasted by staying only to have it end anyway. (hide spoiler)]
