Author writes:'Pat Merton and Fenella Carruth first appeared in my book Think of England and I have wanted to write their origin story ever since. Here it is.

If it shares characters it is considered a series as per Goodreads policy.
Text inside the book indicates that it is related to Think of England.
Also, please post your requests only once in this Group.
If there is a connection to another book, then it is part of the series.
Rivka has already said its part of the series on the other thread.

That literally connects it to the other book.
Books can be standalone reads but still be part of a series.
The author has literally said it is a standalone. We're not taking the author's word for what they wrote?
Apparently the author's word is that it takes place two years before Think of England.

I think we're all talking at cross purposes here. These are two standalone books within a shared world. To some authors "series" implies both continuous story and therefore a need to read Book 1 before Book 2 and so on. We can agree that this is not that kind of series.
Goodreads classes as series books which have a shared world, Shared characters, or a continuous story. However, any given series does not need to have more than one of the above. In this case, it has two - shared characters and shared world. For our purposes, this is clearly a series as the works are sequential even if they're not part of a formal series.

Okay. Y'all are not hearing what is being said. Author has proposed a solution here https://www.goodreads.com/book/edit/4...There remains an incorrect/duplicate listing with this author as well--yes, I listed this as a problem elsewhere, but maybe someone here can also fix this.

That seems fine to me, since "Think of England" doesn't seem to be printed anywhere on the books. Edited.Fixed the name on Gilded Cage & combined.

If the books are to be listed as "England" series, please can Proper English be listed as book 1, Think of England as book 2, and Song for a Viking as 2.5? Since Proper English is a standalone novel and comes first chronologically, and the series name is a Goodreads-only creation, there is no reason to start it at 0.5. Thanks very much.

It isn't a prequel. It's a standalone story that takes place two years before a different standalone story. I don't list these books as a series on any retail site. However, if you are going to create a series label for them, it doesn't make any sense to start it at #0 or #0.5.Either it's chronological by story events, in which case the first book is Proper English (#1) and the second is Think of England (#2). Or it is chronological by publication date, in which case the first book is Think of England (#1) and the second is Proper English (#2). I think it should be the former. Either way, there's no reason to start this brand new series anywhere that isn't #1.
