Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I read three books since my last update. So here's what I read, and what I thought of the books:

Arson
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is another great read by this author, which weaves elements of science-fiction with romance, and keeps you turning the pages until the end. Not to mention, the plot and characters are fascinating, and described so well you can easily imagine you're right there in the world, standing beside the characters while events unfold. Unfortunately, it's let down by the need for more editing, which is why I can't give this one the full five stars. It's still well worth the read though.

Viral Blues
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is an excellent read! It's a fantastic paranormal story, with a plot that's a wonderful mixture of action and humour, which will suck you in from the first page, and hold you until the very end. It was great to see more of some of the characters from other books by the author, especially Lisa, Lizzie, and The Hat. Only the presence of a few editing issues - which were a bit annoying, but didn't stop me from being absorbed by the story - made me hesitate before awarding this book that final star. So, my actual rating is 4.5 stars, but I rounded up, because the issue that almost stopped me giving it the full five stars is such a minor thing, and I like to round up when that's the case.

Serang
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is a fantastic story, which I can’t recommend enough. It’s a gripping read, and a wonderful coming of age story. Though it’s meant as a companion novel to “Voyage of the Lanternfish” - and is an excellent one - it could easily be enjoyed without having read that one.

I am currently reading Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence. I have just started it. It has been a long time since I read a classic, and it is time to rekindle that love affair.

My previous book was far more technical, The Book Review Companion by D Wogahn. As a new author I need all the help I can get on marketing my book.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I read two books this week:

X
by Sue Grafton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I haven't read most of the previous books in this series, but do intend to go back and read them all, despite the fact my actual rating is 3.5 stars, and
it only got four stars because I rounded up. This is a really slow-paced book, and I sometimes felt like we had way more than we needed of each character's
backstory when they first appeared on the scene, to the point I often wished we could just get on with the story already. Other than that though, it was
an enjoyable read.

Zom-B
by Darren Shan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The events of the first three quarters of the book were dragged out more than they needed to be, so it took until the last part of the book for the story
to really get going, and then it was action-packed and gory. I enjoyed the book enough that I want to know what happens next, but sure hope the other books
in the series are more like the last quarter when it comes to plot pacing.

It’s been on my bookshelf forever and I just never got around to reading it till now and it’s completely different from how I thought this book was going to be. So far it’s amazing. Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I finished Burial Rites by Hannah Kent, based on the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last person to be executed in Iceland in 1829. Kent incorporates archival material in the narrative and fills in the blanks with a sympathetic portrayal of a woman mired by poverty and challenging circumstances.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments This week I read...

The House Beneath the Oak Trees
by Faye Belle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I got a copy of this book through the narrator of the audio version, whose work I'm a fan of after having had her narrate some of my own books. Had it
not been for her, I wouldn't have even known this book existed. I'm really glad I did learn of its existance and get to read it though. It's an excellent
drark gothic story, with a great cast of characters, and an interesting plot full of surprises.

Warned
by Katrina Cope
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book is another excellent addition to the series, as well as a wonderful story in its own right, which left me chomping at the bit for more. It's
a fantastic read, sprinkled with mysteries, threats to overcome, magic, and action, which also lets us see the quieter moments, when we can watch the bonds
between the dragons and those they are paired with growing and evolving.
*NOTE: I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This fact has in no way influenced my opinion of the book,
nor the contents of this review.

Abby and Holly Series, Book 3: Secrets of the Trunk
by Janice Spina
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was an excellent read for middle graders, and those who are grown up but still enjoy children's stories - especially fans of paranormal mysteries.
The whole series teaches valuable life lessons children should be taught - and even some of us adults could sometimes do with a reminder of - but in a
fun way. As with the previous books, this one has a fantastic plot, and a wonderful cast of well-rounded and relatable characters.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I read two books during the past week. So, here's what they were, and what I thought of them:

Win
by Vera Nazarian
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Normally, when a book ends on a cliffhanger like this one, I can't bring myself to give it the full five stars. But this one... The worldbuilding, the
plot twists, the action, the characters... They were all so well done. Yes, Gwen's a bit annoying and naive at times, but Aeson's very existance makes
up for any annoying moments we have to endure with Gwen, because... WOW! So, because Aeson has stolen my heart, I'm rounding up to the full five stars,
despite the cliffhanger ending. Now I need book four, like now!

Through the Nethergate
by Roberta Eaton Cheadle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a thrilling tale, which combines fabulous paranormal elements with fascinating historical facts. The first part of the book feels a little more
like a collection of themed short stories than the start of a novel, but it all comes together nicely after a while, at which point it's much easier to
become engrossed in the tale.

Julie Round | 41 comments I have just started the Long Shadow by Mark Mills. I will never understand why authors use the same title as at least fifteen other books. OK, so it's a symbolic phrase but don't they want to be original? ( I have asked before - is it the publisher's idea?)

There are several reasons. Sometimes it's intentional, and other times it's not.
