Alice Poon (alice_poon) | 165 comments I've started 近代中國史綱(下) by 郭廷以 (Volume Two of A History Outline of Modern China) by 郭廷以 (Kuo Ting-yee). This history book covers the period from 1912 to 1949, i.e. the Yuan Shikai autocratic reign, the warlords era, the Japanese invasion and occupation, up to the establishment of the PRC.

Here's my review of Volume One which I had read in December 2018:

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I had a great reading week, and ended up reading three books. So, here's what I read, along with what I thought of the books:

The Eternity Code
by Eoin Colfer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is the best of the series so far. The action, the feels, the twists... They're all so well done. How could I give this book anything other than five stars? It deserves every star for certain!

The Opal Deception
by Eoin Colfer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is another excellent addition to the series. It's full of emotion and action from start to finish. Plus I love how the characters and their relationships with one another are developing.

The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde
by Oscar Wilde
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
These are beautifully told tales, though admittedly with a bit more enthesis on religeon than I generally like. I advise anyone planning to enjoy them with their children to have a read/listen yourself first though, since they aren't your unicorns and rainbows Disney-like fairy tales.

Jesse Reads | 1 comments Just finished All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. It's a good read but definitely controversial.

message 2332: by John (new)

John Parrino | 25 comments Just finished Stolen Blessings by my all time favorite author, Lawrence Sanders. A good, quick, fun read but not his best. Depth of character, his trademark is absent in this one.

message 2333: by V.M. (new)

V.M. Sang (aspholessaria) | 230 comments I've just finished reading Silent Payback by Jaye Marie. A good story in the detective mystery genre.

message 2334: by Jason (new)

Jason Howl | 54 comments Shirley Jackson's short stories, Dark Tales. I never read The Haunting of Hill House, oddly enough. I really liked her collection on her family Raising Demons

Jason Howl | 54 comments Ray Bradbury was awesome. Love his intricate and wild language.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I only read one book during the past week (it was almost two, but I didn't quite finish the second one). So, here's what I read, and what I thought of it:

The Cock of the South
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is an excellent and gripping story, which combines alternate history with fantasy wonderfully. If you enjoy those things, you should definitely read
this book, and join this fantastic cast of characters on their action-packed adventure.

Lynda Dietz | 354 comments I just finished Not Guilty by C. Lee McKenzie. It's YA and it's every bit as good as her other YA I read (Double Negative).

I reviewed it, and you can read the review here if you'd like.

Cphe, sorry for the late response. No, I haven't heard of Ackroyd's The Lambs of London, but it looks good. I've put it on my TBR. Thanks.

Deborah Lagarde (deb_lagarde) | 116 comments Just finished Barry Chamish's "Who Murdered Yitzhak Rabin?" Chamish is one helluva truth-telling writer and former Israeli journalist (he had to leave Israel, supposedly, because the deep-staters over there were screwing with him, plus other truth stuff he wrote about Israel, esp. the govt.) If you want to know or investigate why Israeli politics is so screwed up these days, this is a must-read book. Chamish's truth: Yagil Amir, in prison for "killing Rabin" did not kill Rabin, and like Lee Harvey Oswald, was a patsy. (Note: Rabin was the former Israeli PM who signed the Oslo Accord with PLO leader Yassir Arafat in the early 90s.)

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I read three books this week, so here's what I read, and what I thought of the books:

Panama
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a great paranormal adventure, with a strong western feel. The characters and plot are believable and well-fleshed out, and it all moves at a nice
pace. It does have a bit more of the gun fight type western feel than I like, but that's a personal preference thing, and if you like that kind of thing
- and are open to the addition of paranormal elements to that kind of story - you should definitely check out this book.

Wild Concept
by C.S. Boyack
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is an excellent story, with a fantastic plot, and a wonderful main character who's easy to connect with and relate to (despite being a robot). I highly
recommend this book.

Ambushed
by Katrina Cope
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is yet another excellent addition to this series, which makes for a gripping read for fans of dragons, magic, and mythology. The plot and worldbuilding
are fantastic, and the way the characters and their relationships with one another are growing and evolving throughout the series is wonderful. The main
character of this book is someone you can both relate to, and learn a lot from. I can't wait to see what's next!
*NOTE: I was given a free advanced copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This fact has in no way influenced either my opinion
of the book or the contents of this review.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 425 comments I read Kintu by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi. It is epic in scope, charting several generations of a clan in Uganda. It got to be a bit confusing because there are so many members in the clan that it was a challenge to figure out who was related to whom. I think it would have been helpful to have included a family tree.

My 3-star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
