Its difficult unless we know your preferences. My suggestion would be to go through the read book folders of your friends here and pick your choice. Or you can go to the explore button on the top bar of this page, and click on genres, listopia or popular. And then if you click the title of the book, you will get a short summary.
Happy reading.
Happy reading.

Let's see if you like any of them :)
Harry Potter series
Bartimaeus Trilogy starting with The Amulet of Samarkand
Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window
And Then There Were None
Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Book Thief
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

@pasmith - Thanks for your suggestion.
@Sherin - Thanks, I ll post once i finish the reading of above ones.

Books are like lover affairs. You do not decide and do them! :-) Seems funny? But true.
Just take a temporary member ship of a library. Roam around in it, read a few titles, blurbs (the details written at the back of it). Pick a few just because you liked the cover.
There will be a few which will intrigue you, some will disappoint. But as I said, they are like lover affair. Each book you will read (and abandon without completing) will give you something.
Welcome on the voyage!

That's a wonderful suggestion!

Reading all those will take any time between a fortnight to decades depending upon your reading speed and interests! So don't take that much time for coming back.. Keep frequenting here. :)

And here I go again with my personal favourite genre-classics. You may always begin with a simpler classic (since classics are notorious for being books that ramble over descriptions!)

@Psmith - Yes, As suggested by @Sherin . I have started to read " And then there were Gone " by Agatha Christe

@Farikith You guys are right. But before begin anything we have to taste all instead of being specific, then only we can decide which genre is good for us.

@Sherin.. I begun my read with one of ur suggestion.

@Suresh, If you like 'And then there were none' you may also like Agatha Raisin's mystery novels. And there is always Poirot, my personal hero!

Hope you enjoy it!

But is it a good mystery.

I've always been at a loss when beginners ask me for book recommendations. I think I'll copy your suggestion next time... ;) :-D

I was five and half year old when I read the first book. It was a BOLD typeface books for kids which they printed then. It was in my mother tongue and the name meant "A prince on a flying horse" I do not remember the content but do remember the cover art and it was love at first sight for me. :-) I read it and rest, as they say, is history. :-)
I have been reading since then and when someone ask me which (one) book you like, I can not tell. I can not even recommend a genre as I do not discriminate. :-)
And way I was reading my parents were wise enough to get me library membership. :-) They might have gone bankrupt trying to buy books. :-) So I always suggest to visit a library.
