Light vs. Darkness Read-a-Thon Duel
January 3-18
This can be our tracking post. If you've got a book you know you'll be reading in a certain page count category i..."
I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo, which fulfills the "over 901 pages" book.

It was a great book! The plot is pretty complex, and mid-book it was a bit of a struggle for me to keep all the characters straight, but I thought it was worth the effort.

I completed The Great Gatsby for the "Paint Remover" segment of the Quest to Save Christmas mini-challenge!
I just finished Talon and Taboo For You. Both were good but I feel a reading slum coming. This can't be good. :/

Sonia rearranged a few books and we are now finished with the Quest to Save Christmas! We got our 100 points! Woohoo!

Reading slumps are the worst! How did you like Talon? That one's on my list to read this year.
Would you like recommendations or help picking from your shelves?
Talon was okay. It was the action packed dragon book I was expecting it to be. So that was disappointing.
Maybe recommendations will do. Something new and refreshing sounds nice. But I'm not sure what though...

It has a gritty feel to it like the Incarceron series, if you liked those (I peeked at your shelves to try and get a feel for what you read). It was one of my favorite books I read last year - strong world building that fully developed her plot, which is a retelling of Phantom of the Opera in a slaughterhouse. I loved it, and it was definitely different from anything else I read.
Huh. It does sounds interesting. I think I'll give it a try.

Things have been a bit frazzled this past month, but hopefully I can start being a more active contributor here and not such a quiet captain.
If we are still doing the light vs. shadow elements, thought I would put it out there that I have just finished Moby Dick and Inkspell.
Also about to finish HP OotP so that's a big ol' chunk o' pages.

And awesome Taryn! I saw a few people were reading HP and meant to ask if anyone was going OotP since that seems to fit in the last category we need. How'd you like Moby Dick? That's one I'm going to get to one day.....

Oh perfect! That was just a bit of luck because to be honest I have no idea what has been happening in this group for a little bit. I joined another group challenge, and I'm not quite liking how militant it is, so I'm thinking about dropping it. But the challenges are so fun that I hate to leave just because I don't have the 'commitment' the others do. But that has been kind of taking up my Goodreads time. Sorry, rant. lol
Anywho....
I have to be honest. I really tried to like Moby Dick, but found it as boring as lots of others say it is. And not in the 'there's a lot of descriptions in here' way. There is almost little to no action, which is interesting since all pop culture references to it, etc. are about those really big fights with the whale and everything. But really there are chapters on describing the body parts of different kinds of whales, a whole chapter on why the color 'white' is representative of both good and evil, and long, long chapters on description of historical pictures of whales. I just couldn't even pretend to be remotely interested. That being said, it is my mom's favorite book in the entire world, which is why I struggled through to the end. She absolutely loves books about the sea, and so this was right up her alley. So, maybe find the most boring chapter in the piece, see if you can get through a couple of paragraphs and let that be your guide. ;)

Moby Dick sounds like not my cup of tea. I think I'll keep being okay with not reading that particular classic! :)
And Taryn, so with you on that other challenge. My head is just constantly spinning and I'm so happy to come here and have nothing but calm, dedicated readers who just want to chill and enjoy themselves.

Sorry I haven't been more helpful but real life has been hard over the last 2 months. Hoping to get back into my groove within the next couple of weeks as things start to go back to normal.
Ummm Logan and Taryn - what other challenge do you speak of .....so I can avoid :D

Taryn and Logan - hope your challenge is over soon :)

And Taryn, your review of Moby Dick sounds a lot like everything other review I've heard about it. I still want to read it, but with everything else that I REALLY WANT to read and that I know I'll enjoy, it just keeps getting pushed to the back burner.

I'm working on a team challenge for us once the read-a-thon is done. Maybe something based on those awesome questions Taryn gave us to answer toward the beginning so we can remember the great things we learned about each other.
For Dani, Kate, Madame Malice, and Celine, here are some posts from the beginning of the challenge where we chatted and got to know each other. Feel free to chime in!
Questions Part 1
Questions Part 2
And if you want to generate your own elf name: http://elf.namegeneratorfun.com/

Who wouldn't want to generate their own elf name??? I'll get to the questions later tonight, but I couldn't wait for the name. My elf name is Glamrenel :D
A team challenge sounds exciting, tho! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Yay!!! A team challenge!
Yay!!! A team challenge!

Where is the like button when you need it :D
That's quite a bit of questions! Sounds awesome.
So I finished Order of the Phoenix! Hope it helps out our challenge a little.

I have read the following so far this month:

I'm currently working on:

Wow, you've been busy reading too!

WOOOOHOOOOO
GO DARK BEINGS!!!!!
Yay!! Are we still putting up more books? Aka when does that particular challenge end?
Flu on my birthday = everyone feeling sorry for me. What they don't realize is: excuse to sit in bed and read all day! Best bday ever!
