Florence | 683 comments I read this book in the mid 90s-early 00s. I think it was in a compilation of other stories, maybe with a red cover. It was about a little girl who told huge boasting lies to her friends but when they came true she regretted it and wanted her normal life back. She lived in a mansion hidden behind a normal terraced(I think) house front. There were lemonade taps or a fountain. I think her parents were away (maybe with fancy jobs?) and she was allowed to live by herself? But started missing them I think?

Florence ~~
You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 95 from two months ago where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!

Florence, what is the common theme of the stories in this collection? What's the genre or tone?

Florence | 683 comments It might have been a compilation of stories about naughty children but I’m not sure. I think I remember the cover being red. The tone was comedic and fairly modern(not like Victorian morality tales or fairytaleS).

Lizzy | 7 comments Could it have been one of the stories in the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books?

Florence | 683 comments I don't think its a mrs piggle wiggle book I'm afraid.

Can you give examples of the little girl's elaborate lies and how they came true?

Florence | 683 comments She said she lived in an enormous mansion/ palace, and it just looked like a normal terrace house from the outside. Her friend at school comes to visit and it’s true. She says there’s lemonade or something similar that comes from the taps, and at some point that starts happening and she just wants water again I think? I think maybe she says something about her parents having some kind of fancy jobs so she gets to be alone and in charge, but then ends up missing them?

Any chance the main character is a boy (e.g., a long shot - The Tall Story by Frieda Hughes)?

Florence | 683 comments It could be a boy it’s been a long time since I’ve read it! But it’s not the tall story!

Rainbowheart | 28707 comments Do you think this is a UK book?

Florence | 683 comments Probably. I’m in the uk, and I feel like the girls house may have been in london, though I’m not certain.

Rainbowheart | 28707 comments You mentioned terraced houses, so I thought of the UK. That style is not very common in the USA.

I'll try to see what I can find! Do you remember anything about the other stories in the book? Were they by the same author or different authors?

Florence | 683 comments I think probably different authors? I read a lot of the stories for 7/8/9/etc year old type books so it could maybe have been in that sort of compilation? I feel like the illustrations in the book were pen and ink scribble sketchy style? Not quite Quentin blake but similar maybe?

Have you looked at and ruled out any of these, e.g. The Puffin Book of Stories for (blank)-year-olds series?

Florence | 683 comments There’s a strong chance it’s in Barbara iresons wicked omnibus of naughty stories which doesn’t seem to be on goodreads, but I definitely recognise the cover. I’ve ordered a copy and hopefully it’ll be the right book! It’s been out of print for years and nowhere on the internet is there a list of contents...
