It was a short story in a book of short scary stories. The boy finds a secret compartment/drawer in the box and inside is a small figurine of a boy where clothes from olden times. YA and its NOT Scary Stories by Schwarz lol.

Back in the 90s and probably published in the 90s
Ooh! I read this, I think. Was it one of J.B. Stamper's anthologies, specifically... Still More Tales for the Midnight Hour? There are more details on Wikipedia and it feels like "The Magic Vanishing Box" is the story.
