What makes Redwall so readable?

I have been hooked on Redwall for a couple of years now and have my faves; Mossflower, Martin the Warrior, Lord Brocktree and Long Patrol. You can argue that on the surface they are almost the same: gentle woodlanders take on nefarious villains usually with a badger thrown in somewhere. But it is much more. Is it Brian Jacques writing? His descriptions? Do we identify with these field mice and hedgehogs or is it deeper?
Myself, I like the action. He takes you in and you are there with Martin as he swings that marvelous sword or with the hares as they charge into battle. Oh, and I like the food descriptions too (anyone know what meadow cream is anyway??)
Curious on the thoughts of others...

I was fortunate enough to get to listen to Brian Jacques speak at a book signing once. I think it's just him; he is so... so... charismatic. I think it's his style that is so intriguing, it's solid, exciting. And of course... there's always the food. I think meadow cream is just a variant of clotted or whipped cream by the way.

I think what makes his books so readable is that it is the same plot over and over but with more exiting and interesting stuff into it...all the detail and action are facsinating...

I totally agree with the detail comment. One of my favourite scenes is in Legend of Luke where Martin is demonstrating his prowess with the sword for a group of otters. You can feel every paw fall and every step is measured. Brilliant transportation of the reader into Mr. Jacques mind. I would love to hear him speak some day in person. My family has listened to Redwall on CD, read with a full cast including Brian Jacques but I would love to hear him, alone, speak and tell me a story.

There is a certain charm when he first started...I mean, there are all these great names, like Mossflower, redwall, salamandastron, those are awesome! I find yself writing plot lines EXACTLY like redwall when we are supposed to do a progect in school...

I know!!! I like the action and the thrill, it never bores me and that's what I expect in a book. THough I don't actually care for the food discriptions, I usually skip past them because they make me hungry and I can't eat it with them. I'm stuck with romin noodles, lol.

I tried the fake stuff for the first time yesterday and I didn't care for it. I haven't tried the real stuff and I don't think I ever will, lol.

I've had real and fake. And if you get a good brand then they taste about the same.

I love the detailed discriptions of the settings, the woodlands and castles and stuff. It really makes everything else so much better having a coherant background to place it in.
