Hello, everyone!

My apologies for starting this group and seemingly dropping off the face of the planet. The past month has been crazy hectic at my house. Had a couple family crisis to attend to, our internet went out for a week (it's like living in the dark ages without the internet, how did we do it for so long?), but now I'm back. So. I'm working on building this group by inviting others to join the discussion. Feel free to invite anyone who is interested in supernatural fiction from the 70s and 80s.

I know lots of groups do group readings, and we all may already be involved in some, but are any of you interested in doing a group read, maybe getting one set up for November? If people want to do one, we can start taking suggestions for one and then vote on it. Keep in mind, if we do end up doing one, the books have to be from the 70s and 80s, and must be supernatural--horror, dark fantasy, fantasy, science fiction, etc.

So, what say ye?

message 2: by Char (new)

Char Hi! I hope that everything is okay on the family front.

message 3: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 46 comments I'm up for group reads. :)

I've been going through some family emergencies too. Also an upcoming exam at work has kept me from reading for pleasure.

All is well now, and the exam is tomorrow, so I'll be back to fun reading mode soon!!

Hope all is well with you too!

Yeah, for the most part all is well. Teen angst run amok, I guess you could say. Under control for now.

Any suggestions for a group read, something from the 70s/80s?

message 5: by Char (new)

Char A friend of mine is doing a re-read of Salem's Lot, which awakened in me an interest to do the same.
What books are you thinking about?

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
I had no specific ones in mind. I could go for 'Salem's Lot. Let's see what other s have to say.

UGH! I am not looking forward to the teen years.

I just read Salem's Lot(so good!), I would add to that thread.

I've been wanting to start The Other by Thomas Tryon.

message 8: by Char (new)

Char The Other was excellent. If that's chosen, I'll happily comment. :)

message 9: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
I've not read The Other.

message 10: by Char (new)

Char Another book by Tryon that I thought was most excellent is Harvest Home and it's on sale today in the U.S. for Kindle, for only $1.99!

I'm scouring GR and sending invites to readers with similar tastes to join our group. We'll see if we get any more nominations for a book to read in November. So far we have The Other and Harvest Home by Tryon. If we get more nominations and there's one none of us have read, I think we should go with that one, that way it's a new read for all of us. We're still a small group, so we can do that.

Oh, feel free to invite anyone you think would be interested in joining our discussions. The more the merrier!

message 12: by Kandice (new)

Kandice As far as teen angst goes, I feel you! I have 21, 18 and 16 year old "children". I don't remember my teen years in as much detail as I am experiencing my children's! O_o

I would love to do a group read. I don't have any preferences, but would certainly be on board with 'Salem's Lot. It's among my favorite King books and the mini-series scarred me for life.

I haven't read 'Salem's Lot since my junior high days, so I'd be up with that. I see Charlene wants to reread it, and Kirstin says she'd add to the thread, though she recently read it.

message 14: by Char (new)

Char That's about when I read it too, C. I won't say how long ago that was. :)

So far, these are the nominations for a November group read:

'Salem's Lot
The Other

Any others? I know some of you have listed titles in the post about supernatural books you would recommend that others might not know about. If you'd like to nominate one of them for our November group read, list it here and we'll get a finalized list we can vote on.

message 16: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I didn't make a suggestion but would absolutely read along with Salem's Lot. I'm a bit of a book slut, so will probably go along with anything. ;)

I thought I included Harvest Home, but I guess not, so here it is also.

It seems like The Other, is one that most of us have not yet read, so how about that for a group read? If our group was bigger, I'd post the different titles and we could vote in a poll, but I think we're small enough to do it this way until we grow. What say ye?

message 19: by Char (new)

Char Cool. I'll pop in see how it's going. :)

message 20: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 46 comments I'm excited to read that! :)

Hello Everyone,

Well. Anyone up for one more try at this group? Seems I have to apologize AGAIN for going MIA on this group. Many changes in family life at the end of 2014/beginning of 2015, took the second half of 2015 to adjust to them, now back in a family routine and all adjusted.

Anyone care to try this one more time with me? I'd love to read and discuss supernatural books from the 70s/80s, the heyday for me in horror/dark fantasy when I was in junior high and high school and reading all the time.

Would love to have you all back, and totally understand if you're not willing to give it another try.

How 'bout it?

message 22: by Char (last edited Mar 02, 2016 12:48PM) (new)

Char I'm still hanging out and will participate when I can. Glad to see you back and hope that everything family-wise is okay. :)

message 23: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 46 comments Yay! Glad you're back. :)

message 24: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Glad you're back and would love to participate, just let me/us know how. :)

I would like to start a group read, but have no idea which book to start with. Any books from the time period that any of you have been dying to read or reread?

Kandice C. wrote: "I would like to start a group read, but have no idea which book to start with. Any books from the time period that any of you have been dying to read or reread?"

Something by Stephen King or Koontz, maybe?

message 27: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
Which titles?

message 28: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Carrie, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Firestarter to name a couple that fit the peramters from King.

The Flesh in the Furnace, Demon Seed, or The Face of Fear from Koontz.

Sphere by Michael Crichton barely makes it.

Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.

Ghost Story or Shadowland by Peter Straub.

I'm not sure if all of these qualify.

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
I've been in the mood to reread The Shining, Firestarter, Shadowland, or Ghost Story. It's been a long time since I've read these, especially The Shining and Firestarter. Shadowland is in my top ten, maybe top five, novels of all time.

Any other thoughts anyone?

message 30: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I would love to read Firestarter or Ghost Story. I reread The Shining recently. I've never read Shadowland, so would be up for that too, but I'll need to get a copy.

message 31: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
Kandice, have you read Firestarter or Ghost Story?

message 32: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Yes, both. The only one of the titles you suggested that I have not is Shadowland. Don't worry, though, because I am a rabid re-reader. If I like a title, I am always up for a re-read and I like both.

message 33: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 46 comments I'd be up for Shadowland. I loved Ghost Story and Koko. I might reread Firestarter, it's been a while,

message 34: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think I remember liking Koko too.

I'm up for almost anything.

message 35: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
How about we do Shadowland then? I've read it a couple times, but it's been a few years since my last reread. Love that story, so another reread is in order for me.

What do you think about taking this week for each of us to invite people we think might be interested in this group and maybe start the reading next week, or if we need to we can wait until April.

Your thoughts?

message 36: by Chad (new)

Chad Lorion (goodreadscomcmichaellorion) | 92 comments Mod
Let's do Shadowland, and how about starting the group read in April? This would give us time to finish what we're now reading, get a copy of Shadowland if we need to, and invite more friends to the group to join us in the group read.

message 37: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Count me in!

message 38: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 46 comments I'm in too! :)

message 39: by Matthew (new)
