San Francisco (Retired thread)
Sorry you missed it, too, Bob! It was good - it was just four of us (and I was late because of work - curses), and we talked about whether the romance in Alif the Unseen worked, if G. Wilson Wilson's "surrogate" in the novel, the convert, was truly her, jinni cyberpunk, the Arab Spring, the many versions of the film Blade Runner (and the voiceover and Rutger Hauer improvising), translations, what else we were reading (and playing), and a bunch of other good stuff I'm likely forgetting.
I'll have a thread for the November meeting up in a bit.

OK, instead of wastefully starting a new thread each time, I'm just going to update this thread each month from now on. Details on Nov 24 meetup in the first post!
Hey folks, a note about Monday (Nov 24)'s meetup - Borderlands is having their all-staff meeting that night, so the cafe will close early, at 7pm. They're graciously letting us stay til 8 as usual anyway, the only stipulation is we HAVE to be out of there by 8. I told them it would not be a problem.
Again, I won't be there but V the Supreme Sword will be! Also, there's no Dec meetup, but we will resume in 2015 on Jan. 26. Have fun on Monday, and see you in January!

It was fun meeting all of you last night and I greatly enjoyed our conversation. I was bummed I couldn't go out for drinks afterwards, but hopefully next time. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!!
You guys, Blade Runner tonight! I made an event. Probably too late. But I'll be there and probably decently drunk.
So yea I already watched Blade Runner last month and I'm not someone who can rewatch so quickly! :)I totally support not having a meeting Dec 29, that would be silly. Would anyone else want to meet Jan 5 though to discuss the December book?
I haven't been able to show up for the local meetings yet, but I will be out of state from the 14th-21st. Would love to go see Blade Runner if it is showing any other times. Will be trying to make the next monthly meetup
I'm down to do an impromptu meet-up. Will be back on January 1st from holidays, so anytime after that works for me.Welcome, Sky!
Well no quorum for a rogue Dec replacement meeting. I'm going to the Jan 17th Sanderson reading in El Cerrito. (Hooray, E. Bay gets an author!) I don't follow his YA work, but his readings and Q&As are always fun.

Hey, I grew up in Houston, too - it's not all bad: there's Jones Hall, the Menil collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, other museums I'm forgetting, the yearly Art Car Parade, and, to get away from Bladerunner-ness, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. AND... at least it's not Dallas. ;)
Arboretum & Nature Center totally sounds like a place in Bladerunner. Except it would be run by the Federal Reserve to secure the currency with its valuable trees and animals. ;)
Gah! I was super-delinquent adding the Jan meetup as an event! It's now up, so please RSVP - link in first post.
We talked about The Night Circus, The Sparrow - which we will continue discussion of next month since I was the only one who finished it haha, Ridley Scott's hits and misses, The Dresden Files, ham radio, Outlander, CONVENTIONS - specifically DragonCon, ComicCon and the local FogCon which happens this March (see link above!), and much more that I'm forgetting.
Ian, I wish FogCon had their programming schedule up (it's still blank right now), that'd help me decide for sure if I'm gonna go/which days I would go. :)
EDIT: Next meetup is Monday, Feb 23 - added RSVP link to first post, and here!

If you join like right now you can vote on their schedule and volunteer yourself for panels. It's halfway a unconference I guess.
There's a longer post about the reasons for the closing on their website main page:

They're also holding a public discussion in the cafe at 7pm on Thursday, February 12th to discuss alternatives to closing the store. Veronica said she's going, and I will too, so join us if you can!

Yea, my wife and I decided to go. Not really sure what to do, it's not like we can really demand the owners to continue doing a job that was probably never that lucrative. It's telling I heard of the news because Charlie Stross and Mary Robinette Kowal retweeted it so I got one of those push notifications - neither of them live anywhere near here. Borderlands is a worldwide landmark in the genre. In happier news we finally got our Fogcon membership today. Hope to see some of you there as well. :)

I'll be there with my sad face on
Noooooo!!!!! I can't make the meeting on Thursday, but if they discuss a way to help Borderlands, I'm in. Memberships, crowd-funding, whatever. I do like the idea of a book-of-the-month club at a premium price.
Paramount Theatre in Oakland is showing Blade Runner on March 20.http://www.paramounttheatre.com/film....
It is a very cool venue and very Bartable. They have a Wurlitzer. It is pretty awesome.
Updated with March 30 meetup in first post (aka Borderlands lives) -
RSVP

Also, definitely going to FogCon this Friday at least, maybe Saturday, too (Cat Valente! Kim Stanley Robinson!).

maybe Saturday?! It's mostly on Saturday and Sunday!Going to cram reading Orphan's Tale in before the weekend (there's a panel about story within stories). My wife is reading 2312. We'll be ready. :>
Most of Catherynne Valente's panels (including that story within a story one) are on Friday, so that's the day I'm making for sure. Hooray for you diving into Orphan's Tale!
I was hoping, but I didn't want to ask at the Buzz Out Loud event. Also, because I got super shy all of a sudden. Probably because I didn't have breakfast. Bacon gives you courage.
that means we are definately going out for cocktails after right? The Chapel doesn't have a show, so Veronica's hipster allergy won't flare up!
Added next meetup, April 27, as an event -
RSVP here

There was a great turnout last night, a fun discussion, and Fresno Bob did indeed convince some of us to convene for cocktails afterwards. Veronica said she took a picture of us all at the table at Borderlands. Where's the photo, V???

March 30 was my first San Francisco S&L meetup but hopefully will not be my last. Lots of stimulating conversation among a highly intelligent group of people. Been a long time listener/fan of the podcast. Even got a picture with V.
