Doh, Looks like I’m going miss this by a day. I’m working out near Palo Alto Saturday and Monday, but had Sunday off. I will try and remember this if I get done early on Monday, but I highly doubt I can make it into SF by 6pm.

So since the meeting is tomorrow, and I for sure can’t make it now. I took the day and had an awesome drive on some tiny curvey backroads that went from Palo Alto to the ocean. I took Page Mill Rd, to Alpine Rd, to Pescadaro Creek Rd. That dumped me out by Pescadaro county park that has a truly beautiful view of the Pacific, and the surf. I then took the 1 up to Half Moon Bay and had some great Ceviche at the Flying Fish Bar and Grill. And then too the main roads back.

This was a most excellen Sunday afternoon, and I would recommend it too anyone. But it still would have been cool to see you all at the monthly meeting.

John, glad you had a good visit to the Bay Area - sorry you couldn't make it to the meeting! Next time you're back, hopefully.

I'm also going to miss it - work has its tentacles around me like an ichor-covered slave of Cthulhu (I'm sure there's a Potterverse equivalent I'm not thinking of). By end of April, this particular project will be done, so I hope to back on S&L track then!

Hey guys, bad news. Borderlands Cafe is closing at the end of the month! They said groups that meet there can still do so through the end of May. But it looks like we need a new place to meet.

Is the store staying open, but the cafe closing? That's a shame either way since it was a cool place to meet (the one whole time I came)

Yes, the bookstore is staying open until it moves into its new building on Haight, whenever that is. But a bummer about the cafe. I get the reasoning though.

We might consider Manny's at 16th and Valencia as a new meeting place.

Yes, I just saw the email this morn, very sad, it was a great meetup place. :( I'll let you all know what they say about our last May meeting date (our usual date would fall on Memorial Day so it won't be then, in any case).

Yes, open to suggestions for alternatives (the email also said they'd be offering some suggestions for groups looking for a new home)...

for what it is worth, Curio (the bar next to the Chapel) has happy hour pricing from 5-7 M-F, $1 oysters, $2 deviled eggs, $3 hush puppies, and drink specials......in case we want to start drinking before ending

I want to share with you all part of the email Z'ev, the Borderlands Cafe manager, sent me, as it applies to all of you:

"We really appreciate the support that you've shown the cafe; it was creating community space for groups like yours that we had in mind when we first opened the place, and I truly regret that San Francisco has changed to the point that a Cafe like ours is just no longer viable. We're super-grateful for how you've contributed to making a place that felt like home, and was a fun place to work...

Thanks again for everything -- we are happy that you have been a part of making Borderlands Cafe a special place."

He also offered to let us still use the Borderlands Cafe space in May, though it would be officially closed and all its furniture potentially sold at that point, so I decided it's best if we find an alternate place now.

He gave this list of suggestions we can add to our list of potential replacement places:

We could also mix it up! Try a new spot every month. Adds a bit of overhead, but might help us discover more of the neighborhood. Like, I didn't even know Manny's existed!

I love Curio, I'm only worried that we wouldn't be able to get a seat.

I like the rotating location idea. So for that, are you imagining we just pick places that shouldn't be too crowded (ie we don't schedule with the places beforehand)?

I am cool with the rotating location. We just need to factor in seating and noise level. I am curious about Curio, but I love deviled eggs and hush puppies, so that might be why. I do not believe we have been drawing a large under 21 crowd, (except for the occasional visit from Andrew's children, congratulations on the birth of your second by the way) so should we worry about any place that might require ID?

For our first New Adventure how about we try Curio, and if it's too crowded, wander over to Flor De Cafe (which from the reviews sounds like it is rarely crowded)?

I spoke to the owner of Mission Comics and Art which is on Mission between 18th and 19th and he said we ar welcome to use their store. They have a sofa and chairs. Tuesday is when they sort the books for new release Wednesday so that is too busy for them as they will need that space. But we usually meet on Mondays anyway.

I’ve been hoping to check in at these monthly meetups, but unfortunately my schedule hasn’t been open on those nights. Maybe in the fall I can get it going on a regular basis. In the meantime, best of luck in finding a new home for the meetups now that the old place is closing down. I was able to make one meeting there earlier this year for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and it seemed like a delightful place to meet and chat.

Also, I'm passing the book club organizer torch; Robert has graciously agreed to try out being the organizer and forum announcer for the meetups going forward -- makes more sense for someone in the city to be arranging them since we don't have our surefire place any longer. Thanks, Robert! I will still attend whenever I can.
