Free Fall by David Wiesner? A young boy falls asleep while reading a book. There are chess pieces, a castle, and I seem to recall a croissant and salt shaker. Very whimsical with lovely illustrations.

You're welcome. :) I seem to recall the transformation of the salt shaker was a clever bit of fun. I'm gradually making my way through David Wiesner's books. Love the dream-like quality of his illustrations.

I seem to remember a crossant and the kid had a friend in a grey coat and hat that changed into a salt shaker as he was waking up, spilling and the coat flew off with the dreaming kid clutching it.
