I just checked the genre list and Childrens isn't there. What do I need to do? Do I repost and hope for the best or is the book invalid since when you reviewed it Childrens was there and the AR info is IL: MG - BL: 4.7 - AR Pts: 4.0?

I also just rechecked the help for this task and saw that The Halloween Tree was approved in message 16 for Jessica.

Task 30.5, option 4, requires that your book have a word that also appears in the title of one of the Flavia books - those books are listed in post 2 of the Help Thread. The book you listed as having a matching word is not one of the Flavia books.

Helen A post 1914

FYI - the "first published date" is based on the GR information, not on what you find on the book's inside cover. In this case, it doesn't matter - the first published date is 1939, so it still fits within the task parameters and the GO rules. However, this 10 year difference could make a difference in other tasks, so it is best to be aware of the rules.

No need to repost this - this is just for your information.

First, please remember that approval in the help thread only applies to the specifics of a particular task. Task creators are not responsible to verify compliance with general SRC rules, and cannot waive those rules. It is the participant's responsibility to make sure of compliance with general SRC rules, such as those regarding children's books, page length, etc.

The way the children's book rule is set up is that the first question is whether childrens is listed as a main page genre. If it isn't, we don't check. We have used a variety of ways to deal with this issue, and the current way seems to be the most workable one.

If you post it again, and catch the book at a time when there are fewer genres listed and thus that childrens doesn't show up, then you would be able to use it. Whether you think it's appropriate to use a book that you know doesn't meet SRC requirements is up to your judgment. Of course, if you post it again, and childrens shows up at that time, it will be rejected again.

Sandy, would it make a difference if it had already been accepted in a completed task this season for someone else? I used the same book in the same task (same option, even) in post 817. Childrens had not been showing at that time, so I never checked the AR and no one ever asked. If it was acceptable for me (and others in posts 779 and 980) in this season it really should be acceptable for Amy as well (I checked, none of those posts were flagged as problematic).

I was specifically told that the childrens rule didn't apply unless it showed up as a MPG - we all know these change a lot, but who would go looking for it unless it was already there? I, for one, double check at the time of posting, but in this case it has already flipped twice in a just a couple of days since it was posted. We need a better system than penalizing a poster for something that showed up between the time she posted in good faith and the time the moderator processed that post. This is exactly the kind of thing I was concerned about when I first brought this up two seasons ago. I'm not sure what the solution is, because we need balance between what's not excessively labor-intensive for the moderators (who have enough to do already) and what's fair to the posters, but I think there needs to be a discussion. This is a moving target that needs to be nailed down.

You're right, Aprilleigh, MPGs are a moving target. The genre listings is a Goodreads problem, not something that we have any control over. Feel free to contact them about it - I have raised it with GR folks before. So far, to no avail.

Over the past 10 years, the moderators have considered the children's book problem numerous times and tried several solutions. We have (finally, after trying many possible solutions) come up with what we consider to be the best solution. One that does not penalize people who read adult books in this adult reading challenge and one that does not unfairly impinge on your (volunteer) moderators' time.

If you have a better solution, please feel free to message any of the moderators with your suggestions and we'll take them under advisement.

All of the letters in your title word must be found in the target phrase - 4 letters is the minimum letter count for the word, not the number of letters that must be found. Please see message 51 in the help thread for the task.

You need to include the cover in your post. I tried, using your link, to add the cover of the paperback, and it was no problem. Did you put in the ISBN for the paperback when you tried?

I have already had to research this. so don't repost it. However, in the future, you will need to include the cover in your posts - a link is not sufficient.

Joanne MI post 2099

Task 25.6, option 1 requires that the book be written by an author using a pen name or alias. See post 11 in the help thread: "A pen name hides an author's identity by being completely different than their real names, past or present."

As far as I can determine, Seanan McGuire is not a pen name or alias. Mira Grant appears to be, but this book isn't written under that name. Much like Stephen King wouldn't work for this task, just because he also writes as Richard Bachman. If you have info to establish that Seanan McGuire is a pen name, please repost with that information.

also, I have a discrepancy in points - I show you having posted 5.4, 5.6, 10.8, 10.9, 15.2, 15.8, 15.10, 20.5 and 25.5. Does this agree with your records?

The task creator is not responsible to verify that the book meets all general requirements, and cannot approve books that don't meet the requirements. All the task creator does is acknowledge that the book meets the specific task requirements - i.e., BER included. The task specifically states that no children's books can be used, and this cannot be waived by the task creator.

I don't see anything in the description of Death Overdue that refers to Halloween or a Halloween setting. The task states "For this option, read a book where Halloween, Dia de Los Muertos, or All Saint's Day features prominently in the story. If the connection to the holiday is not obvious from the Goodreads description, provide evidence of the connection in your post."

If this book does take place at Halloween, please explain.

Note that this is not a "book from a list" task.
