Man Booker International Prize: Eligible Books 2019

In the Goodreads tradition of the annual Booker eligible lists (and also inspired by the US translation database started by Three Per Cent), this is a list of prospects for the Man Booker International Prize.

N.B. This list has no official connection with, or bearing on, the prize.

The award is for a single work of fiction, translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.
Both novels and short story collections are eligible for the International Prize.

Other years:
International Booker Prize Eligible Books 2020
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2018
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2017
Man Booker International Prize Eligible Books 2016

If adding a title to this list, please bear in mind:
- Author and translator must be alive at the time of the prize.
- The book must have its first UK publication between 1 May 2018 and 30 April 2019.
- No retranslations, or reprints of translations previously published in Britain.
- Publisher must have its "principal place of business" in the UK and issue the book with a UK ISBN. (The translation may have been released earlier in other English-speaking countries, but never previously issued by any British publisher.)

The full official rules for the prize can be read here in a PDF on the Booker Prize site.

Please try to add an English language edition where possible.

Thanks.

Antonomasia Publishers lists & catalogues checked 7-9 August; looked at all 2018 and forthcoming releases where available.
Some of these publishers are new, after seeing them in the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation lists of books for consideration.

Relevant books found
And Other Stories

Fitzcarraldo
Charco Press
Istros
Pushkin
Tilted Axis
Dedalus Books
Peter Owen
Portobello / Granta
Serpent's Tail / Tuskar Rock / Profile / Clerkenwell Press
Faber & Faber
Norvik Press
Nordisk Books
Les Fugitives
Parthian Books
Oneworld
Darf Publishers (2018 catalogue)
Scribe UK
Verso Books
Jacaranda
Europa
Text Publishing
Comma Press - probably finished but 2018 catalogue doesn't load
Glagoslav – unpublished forthcoming stuff not on Amazon/GR incl August releases
Balestier – has a number of 2018 books listed which are not on Amazon; can’t locate when searching by authors; not sure if all have actually been published
Orenda Books
Noir Press (Lithuanian)
Bitter Lemon Press
Picador/Pan Macmillan - Spring catalogue not on Issuu. Couple of extra books (autumn) on website but not in catalogue.
Bloomsbury
All PRH imprint catalogues Jan-June & Jul-Dec
Fourth Estate / William Collins
Gallic Books
Hachette catalogues on Issuu covering multiple imprints; Maclehose website
Haus
Scribner/S&S (website)
Arcadia

No relevant books found
Valley Press (the one in Yorkshire)
Two Roads (Hodder & Stoughton imprint)
The Gallery Press - Irish, principally poetry
Carcanet
HopeRoad
Little Island Press - not the Irish publisher of children's books, but littleislandpress.co.uk (no translated prose fiction)
Lapwing Publications - poetry publisher in NI
Francis Boutle - worth returning to. specialises in endangered/minority languages
Neem Tree Press - has 2 children's books only
Peepal Tree Press - none (only a multi-author anthology)
No Exit Press/Oldcastle (crime fiction)
The Bucket List - small children's publisher. Still going but no new translations this year.
Liverpool University Press - poetry and non-fiction only
Atlantic Books
Saqi/Telegram
Periscope

Sites difficult to browse, couldn’t determine which books were new, publication dates not listed etc
Seagull Press
Hertfordshire Press

Some books also found via English Pen 2018 translation grants list: https://www.englishpen.org/press/pen-...
(Not all of those are yet on Amazon or listed on the publishers' site.)

Noticed that Warwick in 2017 listed Dalkey and World Editions, but not in 2018; not included these as they don't seem to have separate UK imprints which fit the rules, as Europa, Scribe, Text etc have established.

message 2: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher Honford Star is a new small publisher specialising in East Asian literature, but all their works that would otherwise qualify this year are ones where author is deceased.

Antonomasia Cheers.

You've read Shatila Stories, haven't you? Is it an anthology, or did one or two authors write up stories from people they talked to? (I assumed it was the latter at first but it looks like it might be a multiple-author anthology, in which case it wouldn't qualify.)
Or should it be seen as a novel by a collective, like Luther Blissett and Wu Ming?

It is one novel (not an anthology) but with multiple authors so yes a novel by a collective.

Paul Fulcher added three from Les Fugitives - two new ones just announced published next year but pre deadline (and one - The Governesses - I would say will very likely feature in the BTBA in the US). Didn't seem we had Now Now Louison on the list either.

message 7: by Antonomasia (last edited Dec 10, 2018 01:39PM) (new)

Antonomasia Thanks. Now Now Louison was on previously, but either it must have got lost when I was shifting rankings about, or I wasn't sure whether it would count (one of the early blurbs made it sound like the book content was was half non-fiction essay and half novella) and decided to remove it until it was published for clearer info.

List comments are not accessible via the app and I'd forgotten to return to this one to check it on desktop until now.

Nathalie Legere's Exhibition is now going to be published after May 1 so I should move it to the 2020 list.
