Our October Book of the Month is Deadline by Author Sandra Brown Join us as we read & discuss another great book by this author.

Dawson Scott is a well-respected journalist recently returned from Afghanistan. Haunted by everything he experienced, he's privately suffering from battle fatigue which is a threat to every aspect of his life. But then he gets a call from a source within the FBI. A new development has come to light in a story that began 40 years ago. It could be the BIG story of Dawson's career--one in which he has a vested interest.

Soon, Dawson is covering the disappearance and presumed murder of former Marine Jeremy Wesson, the biological son of the pair of terrorists who remain on the FBI's Most Wanted list. As Dawson delves into the story, he finds himself developing feelings for Wesson's ex-wife, Amelia, and her two young sons. But when Amelia's nanny turns up dead, the case takes a stunning new turn, with Dawson himself becoming a suspect. Haunted by his own demons, Dawson takes up the chase for the notorious outlaws. . .and the secret, startling truth about himself.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I'm excited to read another Sandra Brown book. Mean Streak by Sandra Brown was a great read!

Kirsten (kmcripn) Put both the Kindle and audiobook on hold on my library's Overdrive site. Can't wait to see which one comes in first.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments Put the ebook and audio book on hold at my library too.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
We'll make this a Spoiler Zone on Oct. 15. I'm got 2 other books to finish before I start this one but looking forward to it!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 168 comments Yes, I've been on the library waitlist for Mean Streak by Sandra Brown for awhile now.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Got the audio book from Overdrive. Going to start listening to it today!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
Awesome, Kirsten. I hope to start this one by the first of the week.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished disk 1. As a first impression, I really don't like the primary character, Dawson. He's just rubbing me the wrong way.

As an aside, I've also been listening to Suspect by Robert Crais and both the main characters in this one also have PTSD, yet they're a lot more sympathetic to me.

Probably just a personality thing.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15069 comments Mod
The hero in Mean Streak started off in the ditch, too. Sort of how Sandra Brown creates her characters, at least those I've read.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Sandra Brown creates her heroes from a different mold I think. They're very complex. I loved Dawson all the more because of his characterization by miss Brown.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I agree...I tend to like these type heroes. They kind of break the "hero" mold - even do some unhero type things but always come through in the end.

Paula | 245 comments Just bought Mirror Image by Sandra Brown and Mean Streak by Sandra Brown . Don't know which one to read first. Both look exciting and a different read which I am craving right now.

I liked both but Mirror Image more.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I have Miror Image but haven't read it yet. I loved Mean Streak.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Finished the 2nd disk of the Deadline audiobook. I'm still having a hard time getting into this. Also, I'm having a hard time getting engaged by the characters.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I've only just started reading this one. I will say it hasn't snagged me quite the way Mean Streak did but I'm only a few chapters into it. It's interesting & intriguing but I'm not feeling a pull with the characters either...yet.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments Uh oh, you're both making me nervous...

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I've only just started, Karen. Give it a chance. I think it'll be good.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments I will, don't worry...lol. Reading it next.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, it might just be me...

Lisa Well I was hooked from 2nd chapter nearly finished and enjoying. On wait list for Mean Streak

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I'm definitely hooked now! Really into it...loving Amelia!

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments I should be starting by tomorrow.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
Great Karen. This one is beginning to get that "creepy, scary" feeling...you know someone is watching but who??

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments After the character reveal, things start to really pick up. The shock factor kept me on the edge till the last chapter.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I think my head just wasn't in it the first couple of chapters...got it on straight now & really pulled into it now.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments I'm only on Chapter 4 and I love this book already.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Can't wait to discuss it more once everyone is done! :) I found this book to be more character driven than Mean Streak (another great book if no one here has read it yet).

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I loved Mean Streak - it was a great read & kind of different. I'm also enjoying Deadline.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15069 comments Mod
I'm just starting to listen to it!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
Almost finished! Sandra Brown does know how to write suspense!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I loved this book! Wow...Sandra Brown has a way of continuing to build the suspense & then she gets you with shocker after shocker right up until the end. Very close to the end, just when I thought everything was all wrapped up, she did it again! Awesome read!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 168 comments I just got it in from the library. Looking forward to listening to it.

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments Glad you liked it Sandra! That's pretty much how I felt too. I would think i kind of had it figured out, then she totally throw a major curveball, and I would just sit and go "what just happened" lol. Honestly love this type of suspense.

message 38: by Lisa (new) - added it

Lisa Wow, just finished it, total mystery till the end. Really enjoyed this read, now another must read author.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I figured out a few things but those shockers near the end - even after that, she's still not finished throwing curve balls at you! Wow...awesome read.

Kirsten (kmcripn) Still slogging my way through. Hoping it gets better.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
Sorry you're not enjoying it, Kirsten. As much as we all enjoy a lot of the same books, we're also different...this book may just not be for you. It didn't take long for me to be totally hooked.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just don't get much from the characters at this point. I just don't see any chemistry so far.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I understand what you're saying. Sometimes, I read a book like that & often everyone else loved it but I didn't. Hope it picks up for you.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15069 comments Mod
I agree with Sandra. It grabbed me from the start so sometimes a book that works for others may just not be your cup of tea. Sorry it's not doing it for you.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
I'm excited to discuss this one. I need to count just how many times in the last few chapters that she surprised/shocked me! Spoiler Zone starts here on the 15th! :)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15069 comments Mod
I'm trying to get to at least half way today.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11223 comments Mod
The action/suspense really ramps up in the latter part. I just love when an author can surprise me - and when she can do it more than once in the same book, she goes way up my list of Must Read Authors. I'm already trying to decide on my next Brown book!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15069 comments Mod
So...maybe I'll go more than halfway!:)

I think you'd really like Mirror Image and Lethal.
Mirror Image by Sandra Brown Lethal by Sandra Brown

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments My next one will be Lethal but I gotta finish other books I have in queue first. My mindset when reading her books (i only read 2 lol) is to put the suspense and plot first, and romance second. I was actually more interested in the development of the plot and the romance was more of a bonus.
